MAKING MEMORIES THAT LAST As much as I want to deny it, summer is too quickly coming to a close and kids are heading back to school. There’s something nice about the routine of the school year, but I always miss the relaxing nights of summer. This summer has been a difficult one for my family, but one that has taught me a valuable lesson. At the end of June, I lost my dad somewhat unexpectedly at the age of 74. I have spent time with my mom this summer helping her get their affairs in order as well as grieving together. In going through this loss, I have found myself holding on to the memories I have of my dad and trips our family took together while I was growing up. It has also made me think of my own family and how I want to create lasting memories for my son. He’ll never care or remember what toy I bought him for his birthday, but he will remember happy times we experienced together.
Enjoy the last few days of summer with friends and family! Have a safe and happy Labor Day!
That’s just one of the reasons I enjoy working for E&V so much. We strive to create a healthy work/life balance that allows each employee to spend time with their family. We even have a whole committee dedicated to the initiative! With the school year starting soon, I think of the Hall Pass program we started a couple of years ago which allows employees time to make memories with their children at field trips and other school related functions. I love that I am encouraged by E&V to take the time to spend time with my son doing a school activity together. We also have our Employee Assistance Program (EAP) which provides employees many tools and resources to help each individual, as well as their family, in almost any type of struggle they may be having. Employees and family members can get guidance and counseling for emotional, financial and marital struggles, among many other things. It was a comfort to know that as I grieved the loss of my dad, I had the option to talk to a professional about it. So as I reminisce about the memories I have with my dad, I want to encourage all of you to keep creating memorable experiences with your families, fun times that your kids and/or grandkids can keep with them through their lives. You certainly won’t regret it, and E&V is helping and encouraging you to do it! Grace Silva Chief Financial Officer

Reduce Technology Stress: Americans spend an average of 4.7 hours per day on their phones, and 90% of Americans use digital devices for at least two hours every day. This influx of technology into every aspect of personal and professional life can be a significant source of stress if not managed effectively. Follow these helpful dos and don'ts for using technology to alleviate daily stress, not add to it. DO - Work Smarter, Not Harder - Technology is a great tool to enhance productivity, stay organized, and diminish stress. There are a number of productivity apps for mobile phones or computers to track time, manage projects, and help streamline to-dos. Even personal tasks like paying bills can be automated using technology, making life easier and reducing stress at work and at home. DON'T - Work 24/7 - Being constantly available for work is a major source of technology-related stress. Although checking work emails can be tempting, it’s important to switch off from work each day. Set aside time each evening to relax, put the computer and phone away and unwind with a book or a bath. If it is essential to check messages outside of work, instead of constant monitoring. DO - Meditate Daily - Meditation is a widely used method to relieve stress and tension and achieve a calmer, clearer state of mind. Schedule a recurring, daily appointment on the calendar and take ten minutes to meditate. Download a meditation app for iPhone or Android to get started. DON'T - Disrupt Sleep - Technology can affect not only mood but also sleeping patterns. Many people enjoy scrolling their News Feed or watching Netflix or YouTube videos while laying in bed. This trains the brain to think that laying in bed means being awake, and the blue light from screens can affect circadian rhythm, making it harder to fall asleep once phones and laptops are put away. DO - Access Benefits and Services - Living in a digital world means there is a plethora of resources available 24/7. With mobile apps, people can access health insurance information, roadside assistance, and online banking. Employees whose employers offer EAP services through ACI can also access benefits and resources easily through program apps.

101 Best and Brightest Committee Update The Community Initiatives Committee has had some great volunteer opportunities in 2017 with more events coming this fall. We encourage everyone who is able to please volunteer. We know that each of us has busy lives and it can be hard to find the time, but the benefits of volunteering are enormous not only to E&V but to you, your family and your community. Volunteering can help you to reduce stress, reach out to the community and learn new skills. Giving to others may also help protect your mental and physical health. We always welcome E&V employee families to join us at volunteer events. Children watch everything we do as parents; by giving back to the community, you show them that volunteering makes a difference and that giving to others positively impacts many. We would like to thank everyone who participated in our Blood Drive on July 12th, 2017. We had 23 registered donors with 22 able to donate, 6 of those were first time donors. We appreciate all of the volunteers that made this event a great success! We would also like to thank those individuals who participated in Wag n' Walk on August 12th, 2017. If you have an idea for an upcoming volunteer opportunity, we'd love to hear it, please contact one our committee members. The committee members are as follows; Tracey Dowker, Kristen Hauck, Dan Jenema, Shaun Prince and Joe Novakoski. We look forward to an exciting 2017 with our E&V Family!
DON'T - Collect Clutter - While technology can help with productivity and information access, for some, the amount of e- clutter on their phones or computers can create stress and frustration. For those who have thousands of unread emails and photos dating back years, it’s time to go through and delete, file, and organize digital clutter. BUILDINGTOGETHER | August 2017
