SPOTLIGHT ON SAFETY Every day an estimated 1,000 eye injuries occur in American workplaces. The financial cost of these injuries is enormous; more than $300 million per year in lost production time, medical expenses and workers compensation. No dollar figure can adequately reflect the personal toll these accidents take on the injured workers. Because of the high frequency of eye injuries on construction sites, Elzinga & Volkers requires all tradespeople and visitors to wear OSHA approved safety glasses while on-site.

Executive Summary August Already?

The summer seems to be flying by in Fremont. Our crews are busy both inside and out of Gerber Memorial. We are all hoping for a fall like last year, with mild temperatures and little rain. It is Michigan, though, so chances are we won’t get the weather we want! On the second floor, crews began demolition of the west half of the new Pre/Post OP and Endo space. Walls, floors and ceilings were removed to make way for new construction. Now that we have control of the entire second floor, our teams can complete wall framing, electrical and mechanical roughins. On the east side of the second floor, we have been performing the long-anticipated plumbing shutdowns, which allowed us to reroute piping from the first floor to the third floor. Thank you for all your help with these complicated shutdowns, SHGM staff!

Outside, on the emergency addition, the concrete crews are busy forming and pouring the foundation walls for the new addition. Mother Nature has slowed the crews down with rain, but the team from Cascade Cement has overcome muddy conditions to keep work moving forward. Large sections of foundation walls are being formed and steel reinforcing is being assembled on dry ground above the excavation. It is then lifted into place by equipment, keeping the process clean and efficient. Despite the uncooperative weather, the team has done a great job over the last two weeks. I am confident they will remain focused on continued progress with any weather conditions that come their way! - John Parker, Project Manager jparker@elzinga-volkers.com

QUALITY CONTROL Prior to each critical milestone of the project, Elzinga & Volkers hosts a

Stone laydown/drainage mat

pre-installation meeting. At these meetings, we review design information, technical specifications and shop drawings to ensure the installing contractors, architects, engineers and suppliers are all in agreement on the project details and requirements. This week, Elzinga & Volkers will host a preinstallation meeting for the poured concrete walls and

slabs.

Two Week Look Ahead

Pre & Post Op: Asbestos abatement is near completion in the west portion of the east wing, which will allow for the demolition team to get out with the old and in with the new. Once the demolition team is complete, framing crews will step in to set the layout for the new space. Shortly after walls start going up the mechanical contractor will begin installing ductwork for the HVAC system. All while this is going on, new windows will be installed, giving the east wing of the second floor a new look from the outside. ED Addition: We installed a temporary drainage system in what will be the Emergency Department basement, and crews will continue setting steel reinforcement for the basement concrete walls. Concrete formwork will be set along with the rebar to allow concrete to be poured, creating the exterior basement walls. Once the walls are standing the plumber will install all underground drainage for the building.

SUBCONTRACTOR

SPOTLIGHT This week, we would like to highlight the efforts of Cascade Cement, our concrete contractor. Despite some rainy weather conditions during our excavation, Cascade has been able to construct reinforcing assemblies and stage materials on-site,

which will keep the project moving forward. Cascade Cement has been a great partner to Elzinga & Volkers and Spectrum Health System, and we are happy
