SAFETY SPOTLIGHT You may have noticed that crews from VanDellen Steel are not always tied-off while they work on assembling the building’s steel structure. We assure you that they are not breaking any rules. Steel workers get special consideration from MiOSHA, the state authority on worker safety. Because it is difficult to always be tied-off and there may be nothing to tieoff from, steel workers can work unrestrained on certain aspects of the steel structure. Steel crews must complete special training if they aren’t going to be tied-off.

Executive Summary Steady Progress
We have wrapped up another solid two weeks of work at the Gerber Memorial project site. The basement waterproofing system at the ED addition is complete. The crews backfilled the foundation, which has made working in the new building addition much safer and more convenient. Crews from VanDellen Steel continue to work on the first floor steel by detailing some of the important structural connections and installing metal decking. This area will soon be filled with the concrete floor. On the second floor, crews continue the complex task of rerouting utilities from the first floor to the third floor. As mentioned in the last edition of New Views, this task takes tremendous coordination with hospital staff and patients. We again want to thank the Gerber Memorial staff for their help.
Elsewhere on the floor, our flooring contractor started prepping the existing concrete subfloor for new materials, and drywall finishers make way for painters. Planning for the completion of and move into the new Endo/Pre-Post Op space is underway, and we are within just a few months of completion. The continued cooperation between our trade contractors and the Gerber Memorial staff will ensure that the project is an overwhelming success! - John Parker, Project Manager jparker@elzinga-volkers.com

QUALITY CONTROL Again this week, Elzinga & Volkers invited special steel inspectors to the site to monitor and check the structural connections in the new ED addition. These inspectors check the quality of welds, the tightness of

bolts and the position of structural members. From this inspection, a list of required corrections is generated. Elzinga & Volkers then ensures that these corrections are made prior to proceeding with any additional steel or concrete work on the new structure.

Two Week Look Ahead
Pre & Post Op: Up on the second floor of the east wing, you can expect a variety of crews between the two phases. Rough-in installation of plumbing, mechanical and fire suppression lines above the ceilings continue in the West Phase. Wall board will follow soon, allowing the East Phase finishes to transition directly into the West Phase. The flooring contractor will begin to prepare the floors for final finishes, while primer and a first coat of paint are applied to the walls. The vinyl wall protection will also be installed shortly after the walls are painted. ED Addition: Now that the main building foundations and structural steel are up, the concrete and steel contractors will begin to set the canopies and connections to the existing building. This will help make the structure look like it belongs with the existing Gerber Memorial facility! The concrete crew will also pour the main level floor slab to allow for the construction of the building envelope - including exterior stud walls, sheathing, masonry and wall panels. - Jordan Gougeon, Asst. SUBCONTRACTOR
SPOTLIGHT In this issue, we would like to thank the hardworking crew from VanDellen Steel, our structural steel supplier. Their crews are working diligently to erect the ED structure quickly and safely. Fabrication of the structural
