SAFETY SPOTLIGHT Ladders are used by most, if not all, trades throughout various stages of construction projects on-site...and at home. Ladder safety is extremely important not only at the jobsite, but at home as well. Here are a few safety tips to keep in mind when pulling the ladder out to hang those holiday lights:

First, inspect the ladder to assure there is no damage.

Next, only use a ladder on a stable and level surface.

Finally, do not step on the top step or rung of the ladder unless it was designed for that purpose.

Executive Summary All Hands on Deck

With drywall complete on the second floor, the finishes are progressing quickly. Many trades are working amongst one another, making the second floor tight working quarters. Just over the last two weeks, the drywall finishers, painters, ceiling installers, cabinetry installers, floor installers, plumbers and electricians have all been working hard to install the building finishes. Painting continues from east to west toward the surgical corridor. Installation of ceilings, light fixtures and cabinetry are halfway complete, and floor covering is ramping up on the east end of the building.

and duct work) are well underway. While the MEP contractors focus on these roughins, carpentry crews work steadily at getting the building enclosed. The exterior framing is nearly complete, which has allowed sheathing and vapor barrier to be installed to keep the environmental elements out of the building. Once the roof is installed in the upcoming weeks, work on the building interior will ramp up. - John Parker, Project Manager jparker@elzinga-volkers.com

QUALITY CONTROL It is important to Elzinga & Volkers and our trade contractors that we hand over a high quality finished product when construction is complete. In order to achieve this, precautions need to be taken. Staging and completion plans will be put in place to protect finishes as the final touches are installed. For example, as ceiling work continues,

protection sheets are set under all ladders to prevent scuffing or scratching of the finished floors. Also, the layout of the Pre & Post Op unit allows finished rooms to be blocked off, eliminating unnecessary foot traffic.

Two Week Look Ahead

Pre & Post Op: In the next two weeks, the east and west sides of the east wing will begin merging into one. Dimension Four Painting will prime and paint the first coat on the west side and E&V will install wall protection and corner guards, giving the space a more finished feel. After the first coat of paint is applied, D9 Systems will begin hanging ceiling grid, which will allow HighPoint Electric to set light fixtures. On the east end, finishes will progress as Bouma Corporation continues to lay floors and E&V general trade crews set doors and hardware. ED Addition: Before the Thanksgiving holiday hits, you will see crews continuing to button up the exterior of the ED Addition. Along the building perimeter, D9 Systems will continue to apply exterior sheeting and RAM Construction will apply the air barrier to keep the building weather tight. On the north end, Cascade Concrete will pour the concrete columns for the north canopy and Pioneer Steel Erectors will set the final canopy steel for this structure. Down in the basement, River City Mechanical will continue to rough-in the duct and piping mains that will feed the new building’s mechanical and plumbing systems.

SUBCONTRACTOR

SPOTLIGHT This week, we would like to highlight the work of Dimension Four Painting, our painting contractor. Dimension Four has done a great job staying on the heels of the drywall finishers. This has allowed other trades to keep progressing on finish installations.
