SAFETY SPOTLIGHT The fire alarm system of any hospital is critical to patient safety. A system of smoke detectors, alarms, flashing lights and notification systems warn people in the building and the local fire department any time there is a potential fire. Our teams recently completed this system on the second floor, where the system was tested and inspected by a State of Michigan Fire Marshal. We are pleased to inform you that all inspections passed and the fire alarm system at Gerber Memorial is working as planned!

Executive Summary Almost There!

Winter weather cannot keep us down! On the second floor, construction of the new Endoscopy/Pre-Post Op suite is nearing completion. We have officially reached a stage known as substantial completion, which means that construction is more than 95% complete and the hospital has started to move equipment and furniture into the space. Vendors from various companies are also installing patient monitoring systems and nurse call equipment. The new space is looking great and is getting closer to fulfilling its final mission – helping the Gerber Memorial team deliver high quality healthcare! At the emergency expansion, the team is focused on two main goals: get the building addition dry and heated. Crews from TL

Masonry finished up the exterior brick just in time for the cold snap, and Vos Glass started to install window frames. On the roof, Mikalan Roofing started installing insulation and preparing to install the building’s roof. Inside, crews from River City Mechanical have tied into the hot water system, which will power some large, temporary heaters. Once we are heated and dry, rough-in and wall framing will move quickly. We are excited to be nearing the completion of the second floor and some major milestones on the emergency department. More exciting events are just around the corner! - John Parker, Project Manager jparker@elzinga-volkers.com

QUALITY CONTROL When projects near completion, like the new PrePost Op and Endo project will soon be, the construction

and design team create a “punch list. The punch list is a list of items that still needs to be completed and items that may have been installed incorrectly. It is always our goal to have a short punch list and address items on that list as quickly as possible.

Two Week Look Ahead

Pre & Post Op: With construction largely complete, the renovation will turn from a construction site to a usable space. Over the next two weeks, final details will be wrapped up, inspections and testing will be performed, furniture will be moved in and medical equipment installed. Trade contractors will address any minor imperfections discovered during the “punch list” walk-through, which the architect and hospital’s construction representatives will attend. Commissioning will also take place in the upcoming weeks by Peter Basso & Associates, a third party engineering group, as a final check to confirm all mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems are functioning properly prior to the opening of the facility. ED Addition: Winter has certainly established its presence on-site and the big push on the ED Addition is to get the building envelope enclosed and the interior “in the dry.” Mikalan Roofing has delivered roofing materials and will be moving forward with the roof insulation and membrane installations in the upcoming weeks. Installation of the metal wall panels will also begin, bringing the exterior one step closer to completion. Temporary enclosures will be placed as we wait for the windows and door to arrive on-site later in the project. Clerestory framing and exterior sheathing

SUBCONTRACTOR

SPOTLIGHT In this issue, we would like to thank River City Mechanical for their recent work on the ED project. To tie in hot and chilled water to the new addition, crews had to work long nights above the ceiling in the main lobby of the hospital. A significant amount of planning was required to execute this work safely and quickly. River City did a great job completing this complicated task. Thank you again from Elzinga & Volkers!
