SAFETY SPOTLIGHT With all the dangerous equipment, sharp materials and precarious heights that can be found on a construction site, you would probably be surprised to know that simple trips and falls are one of the most common accidents on a jobsite. Small holes and uneven surfaces are unavoidable during the construction of a building, but proper precautions can help minimize their danger. All holes on a project site that are over 4” in diameter most be covered and marked with bold writing. Uneven surfaces can be temporarily leveled or traffic can be directed around them. Most importantly, daily clean up and housekeeping will keep the jobsite free of debris and loose materials. All these seemingly minor precautions can avoid serious injury on the project site.

Executive Summary

Moving In and Moving Along Along with the cold weather in Fremont, the excitement and progress of our project at Gerber Memorial continues on. The Pre/Post Op and Endoscopy space is complete and ready for patients. The staff has been working around the clock to plan and execute the necessary departmental moves, which should allow for uninterrupted patient care. At the Emergency Addition, we are moving quickly on framing new interior walls and roughing-in utilities such as electrical, plumbing and medical gases. Walking through the new addition, you really get a sense of generous patient exam room space, natural light filtering into the nurse stations and the wide corridors that allow plenty of room for patient and visitor movement through the unit. The weather has kept even

the toughest construction workers inside, but we have managed to install all the exterior windows and prepare for the metal wall panels, which will soon be installed above the brick façade. We hope that the staff and community see the new Pre/Post Op and Endoscopy space as just part of the overall advancement of care at Gerber Memorial. While visiting the hospital is not typically a pleasant experience, we hope that the new space is comfortable and allows for the best care possible.

QUALITY CONTROL There are numerous items hung on the walls in a typical patient exam space. Most of us have experienced trying to hang something on the wall and missing a stud or having our fastener come right out since there was nothing for the screw or nail to attach to. To avoid these headaches

later, Elzinga & Volkers installed blocking in the walls at locations which are predetermined for wall hung items. This blocking is either fire resistant wood or sheet metal. This material allows items to securely fasten to the wall later on in the project. Our teams document in-wall blocking with digital photos so that they know later where the materials were placed.

Two Week Look Ahead ED Addition: Coming up in the next two weeks, rough-ins will continue throughout the addition in preparation for inspections in early February. These rough-ins include duct mains and branches, electrical boxes and conduit, piping for the mechanical units and plumbing for sinks and toilets. These systems take much time and effort to coordinate above the ceiling and within the walls. Another activity that requires advance coordination is interior wall blocking. This will be in-wall support to hold wall-mounted fixtures such as TV mounts, medical equipment, bath accessories, cabinetry and wall protection and must be installed before the wall board. On the exterior, Mikalan Roofing will continue to set the roof membrane on the entrance canopies to allow the sheet metal crew to begin installing metal flashings. AMI will be on-site to set the metal wall panels, which will begin to button up the exterior aesthetics. - Jordan Gougeon, Asst. Project Manager jordang@elzinga-volkers.com

SUBCONTRACTOR

SPOTLIGHT This week, we would like to thank D9 Systems for their efforts on the wall framing in the emergency department addition. D9 had a large crew on-site for the last two weeks and has quickly transformed the wide open space into all the smaller spaces that will become
