New Views Spectrum Health - Gerber Memorial
SAFETY SPOTLIGHT We hope that spring is just around the corner, but we thought it would be good to revisit cold weather protection one more time. Prolonged exposure to freezing or cold temperatures may cause serious health problems such as trench foot, frostbite and hypothermia. In extreme cases, including cold water immersion, exposure can lead to death. Danger signs include uncontrolled shivering, slurred speech, clumsy movements, fatigue and confused behavior. If these signs are observed, call for emergency help. Hang in there – the cold weather will end soon!

Executive Summary
Ready to Close Up the Walls While it may not look it from the outside (because it never stops snowing), the ED project at Gerber Memorial is moving along quickly. The trades spent the last two weeks preparing for drywall installation. Every electrical box, plumbing line and light fixtures must be located and roughed-in before the drywall installation can begin. Carpenters have also been hard at work installing blocking in the new walls. This blocking, which is either fire resistant wood or metal, provides a strong material for screws that will hold a wide variety of wall mounted items. With the amount of use and abuse that the Emergency Department will see, we can’t trust the mounting of items to simple drywall anchors.
made some progress on the exterior of the building. Metal panels were installed above the brick on the façade. A matching metal cap was also installed, which completed the roofing system. Crews will continue to work on small roofing details and the large canopies over the next few weeks. Things will continue to move quickly with the installation of drywall just around the corner. Stay tuned for upcoming newsletters on how the completed department will look!

QUALITY CONTROL Before the installation of drywall begins, Elzinga & Volkers led a team or hospital representatives through the new ED space. The participants evaluated the final location of all electrical, data and plumbing fixtures. We ensured that blocking was installed in the

correct locations and that the rooms would function as they were designed. In addition, we took numerous pictures of each room. These pictures will help future contractors and the Gerber Memorial Staff understand what’s behind the walls if they need to perform work.

Two Week Look Ahead ED Addition: With a break in weather, Mikalan Roofing will continue installing the membrane roof and flashing on the ED Addition and its canopies. At the same time, AMI will continue installing the metal wall panels, which will bring the exterior finishes together. On the interior, D9 Systems will shift from framing walls to framing hard lid ceilings. Working alongside the framers, two wall board crews will be on-site. One wall board crew will begin hanging, and a second crew will start finishing a few days behind. This will allow the crews to effectively hang and finish the wall board without wasting any time. As wall board is hung and finished throughout the space, the addition will become more defined, allowing you to visualize what the space will look like when it’s complete. Following behind the wall board crews, Elzinga & Volkers Firestop Solutions will firestop fire wall penetrations. Firestopping is essentially a putty placed around piping and conduits that run through fire rated walls in order to prevent flames from traveling from room to room in case of a fire. - Jordan Gougeon, Asst. SPOTLIGHT This week, we would like to thank the hardworking crews from Architectural Metals Inc. AMI was responsible for the bright silver metal panels installed on the exterior of the emergency department. When we got a break in the weather, AMI’s crew stepped up and completed the panel work quickly. With the metal panels in place, the exterior
