third party inspects and verifies that all systems installed meet the design specifications. Systems are tweaked and adjusted until they run at peak efficiency. This process provides the owner with the confidence that they received everything they paid for and that their building will perform properly.
Executive Summary Down to the Details
This week, the construction team reached a critical milestone on the Gerber Memorial Hospital Emergency Expansion project – substantial completion. This is the point when construction activities near completion and the project starts to transition ownership to the Hospital. Also at this point in the project, multiple specialty vendors descend on the site to start installing critical medical equipment and infrastructure. The first of these groups to arrive on-site this week was the nurse call installation team. Nurse call systems allow patients to notify staff of any needs or changes in their condition. Nurse call also helps staff alert other staff members to a situation where more help is needed. This critical system literally saves lives.
Elsewhere on the site, crews from Cascade Cement are busy installing curbs and site paving, and crews from Summit Landscaping are installing block retaining walls. The site is a few days behind due to rain, but this delay will not impact the opening of the new unit. Keep an eye out for the last few issues of New Views and a sneak peak of this great new addition to Gerber Memorial Hospital!

SAFETY SPOTLIGHT Last week, our team started to connect the new addition to the existing building by constructing a corridor between the old and new emergency departments. With the existing emergency department still operational, infection control becomes an important issue on the project. As they did in previous phases, our partners at FTC&H have returned to the project to perform environmental testing and air monitoring.

Two Week Look Ahead ED Addition: In the upcoming weeks, crews will be cleaning, testing, tweaking and fine-tuning the new addition. The fire alarm will be tested for functionality and ability to communicate with other equipment such as the air handler, elevator and fire suppression system. These components working together properly will ensure the State Fire Marshall inspection goes smoothly. As systems are tested, First Choice Clean will perform construction cleaning on-site to remove all major dust and debris left behind by the contractors. Although this stage of cleaning makes a big difference in the finished space, it isn’t the final cleaning stage. Once specialty medical equipment is moved in and testing has been completed, Gerber Memorial will perform a terminal clean, which will eliminate all small dust particles to assure patient safety once the doors open. - Jordan Gougeon, Asst. TEAM MEMBER
SPOTLIGHT In this issue, we would like to thank everyone on staff at Gerber Memorial Hospital. One of the necessary evils of hospital construction is that from time to time, we need to disrupt utilities like water and electrical in order to expand systems. The staff at Gerber has constantly been accommodating, even when

they had to work harder because of our disruption. Thank you from all of us at Elzinga & Volkers; we could not have done it without you!
