Once the construction is complete, the regional inspector comes to the project site and ensures compliance with both the design and health codes. This process is yet another level of verification that the new unit is safe for patient use.

Executive Summary Final Touches

We are pleased to announce that the new Emergency Department at Gerber Memorial Hospital passed a major milestone this week. On Monday, we received our official certification for occupancy from the State Health Department. This means that the new unit is ready for patients and staff, although there are still a few things left to complete before the new department is opened.

monitor locations in an effort to make the new space as efficient as possible for patient care.

Inside the building, Elzinga & Volkers and its team of trade contractors are completing the punch list, which is a list of small repairs and adjustments that need to be made to the building. Some examples of these small items include paint touch up and hanging final wall mounted accessories.

We hope everyone enjoyed the public open house this weekend and got a chance to see the new unit in person. If you were unable to attend, we will continue sharing photos of the new space in these final issues of New Views and on our Facebook page!

As the Gerber Memorial staff experiences the space for the first time, the construction team is making small tweaks to medical equipment and

On the exterior of the building, security cameras landscaping are being installed. Final touches on the parking lot include striping, signage and a thorough cleaning. This final area of construction will start in the third week of July.

SAFETY SPOTLIGHT As mentioned in the executive summary, security devices are currently being installed around the new emergency department. The security system includes automatic locking door hardware, bullet proof glass and digital security cameras. Because the ED is open 24 hours and becomes the main hospital entrance at night, it is important that the unit is secure and safe for patients and staff.

Two Week Look Ahead ED Addition: With construction substantially complete on the inside of the new Emergency Department, final testing, tweaking and equipment start-ups will take place in preparation for the opening. The next two weeks will be a time of transition for the hospital as Elzinga & Volkers’ trade contractor partners wrap up work on the exterior of the building. Summit Landscaping will add the finishing touches to the exterior with the irrigation system and plantings. Michigan Paving will stripe the parking lot, turning the open sea of black asphalt into defined parking spaces and drive areas for the emergency drop off and EMS Drive. Valley City Sign will install signage to help patients become familiar with the new flow of traffic. Once the transition is made into the new facility, crews will shift over to the existing hospital lobby for a quick renovation and completion of the new drive adjacent to this portion of the building. Stay tuned for more information on this renovation as it begins to come together in the upcoming weeks! North canopy finishes complete
