Executive Summary Getting up to Code FUN FACT Henry Ford was the first Industrial Giant to give his workers both Saturday and Sunday off, in hope that it would encourage more leisure use of automobiles, and thus popularizing the idea of the “weekend”.

Things have started to dry up in Fremont and our crews are back, hard at work on the North Parking Lot. Men and machines from Thompson Brothers have spent most of the week removing poor soils from the site and replacing them with clean, compacted sand. This soil work will ensure a strong, long-lasting parking lot, no matter what size vehicles drive on it. Crews from Highpoint Electric are also working on underground electrical wiring for lighting and power on the site. On the second floor, the recent rains have not slowed us down. Crews are completing

rough plumbing and electrical in new walls. We are also installing new fire-rated chases and upgrading existing pipe penetrations to new code requirements. Much of the work that the crews are completing will never be seen by patients and staff, but it will upgrade the hospital to the newest life safety and fire safety codes. This “behind the scenes” work is critical to the success of the project and will be highly scrutinized by State Inspectors before any patient or staff uses the new areas. - John Parker, Project Manager jparker@elzinga-volkers.com

SPOTLIGHT ON SAFETY Above the ceiling, pipes, conduits and ductwork crisscross and intersect walls throughout the facility. Where these utilities penetrate fire rated walls, special fire stopping is installed. Elzinga & Volkers is a certified installer of this special material and pays close attention to these critical details.

QUALITY CONTROL Crews have been hard at work on the “sub grade” for the North Parking Lot. This “sub grade” creates a stable base for the final asphalt paving on which you drive and park. During the installation of this subgrade, compaction testing is performed by a special third party inspector, which

contractor on the project

Exciting changes will start to happen on the North Parking Lot site over the next two weeks. While you have surely noticed a lot of dirt moving around over the past few weeks, you may not have seen anything that looks permanent being installed. This will soon change. Surveying crews have laid out all the curbs and landscaping islands in the parking lot, which will begin to be installed in the next week. You will also see new sidewalks and walkways take shape. On the second floor, rough-in inspections will be completed and drywall installation will begin. As drywall is finished, primer and paint will be applied before ceilings start to be installed. The process starts to move quickly after drywall is hung, with carpet, cabinets and finish carpentry following close behind.
