QUALITY CONTROL As finishes are installed throughout the project, we take great care to avoid damaging the newly installed materials. Counters and cabinets are protected with heavy cardboard, and finish ceiling tiles will not be installed until all dusty work is complete. No matter how much work we do behind the walls, high quality interior finishes will be the part of the project seen by patients, visitors and staff for many years to come.

Executive Summary Let there be light!

Workers made major strides towards final completion on the North Parking Lot and the Surgical Waiting/PAT area over the last two weeks. Final landscaping, signage, sidewalks and lighting have been completed. One of the most exciting additions to the project was the new monument sign on Gerber Avenue, which welcomes patients and visitors to the campus. As you continue along Gerber Avenue, we have also finished the rain garden, which is an environmentally friendly feature that controls water runoff from the new parking lot. Windows were installed in the new Surgical Waiting Room and PAT Offices, bringing great natural light into the spaces. Finish paint, ceilings and lighting are also being installed in these areas. New natural wood doors

are being installed, and soon, new cabinets, carpet and ceramic tile will complete the spaces. Near the existing Emergency Department, work has begun on the temporary ambulance drive while the new emergency department is being built. The drive will accommodate ambulance traffic during construction and after the new Emergency Department is open, it will become a service entrance for the emergency staff. It has been an exciting two weeks, and the next few weeks you will see even more activity in and around the hospital! - John Parker, Project Manager jparker@elzinga-volkers.com

SPOTLIGHT ON SAFETY Hard hats are a required piece of personal protective equipment on all Elzinga and Volkers jobsites. This attention to safety, however, was not always an industry standard. In the early 1900s shipyard workers covered their caps with tar and let them harden in the sun. This

primitive hard hat protected workers from falling debris that dropped from the ship decks. A firm was known for making protective leather caps, but it wasn’t until WWI when the steel helmet revolutionized safety in the industry. Then, in 1919, a cap made of streamed canvas, glue and black paint was created. The cap was coined with the name

“Hard-Boil Hat”, due to the manufacturing process. Some of the first construction sites that mandated usage included the Hoover Dam and the Golden Gate Bridge. Since then, hard hats have evolved; being fashioned from a variety of materials and able to support a multitude of

Landscaping and site lighting in the North Parking Lot

Two Week Look Ahead

Next week, the North Parking Lot will receive the final certificate of occupancy from the City of Fremont. The building inspector will ensure that sidewalks, parking spots and lighting meet all code requirements and regulations. You may be asking yourself, “Haven’t we been parking on the lot for two weeks without final approval?” The answer would be yes, but Elzinga & Volkers received a temporary approval to park in the lot, which allows staff to be closer to the building. In the new PAT and Surgical Waiting Room, flooring, cabinets and final finishes will be installed. The team will also prepare for inspections by the State of Michigan Fire Marshal, Local Building Inspector and Health Department. Within the next three weeks, we hope to transition staff, visitors and patients into this new space.

In this issue of New Views, we would like to introduce and commend our electrical contractor, Highpoint Electric. Highpoint Electric has been a partner with both Elzinga & Volkers and Spectrum Health on many projects. In addition to this

The temporary ambulance drive will receive paving and final landscaping over the next two weeks. In addition, a security card access system will be mounted next to the new sliding door, and a canvas canopy will be added over the entry area. The EMS staff will have one week of transition time to get acquainted with the new drive before the old drive is shut down.

project at Gerber Memorial,

Demolition on the second floor of the east wing will also continue to progress over the next two weeks. When the new Surgical Waiting/PAT area is complete, crews will take over the remaining 2E wing. This part of the hospital will become the new Pre/Post Surgical space and Endoscopy Unit.
