QUALITY CONTROL As we start to frame the interior walls on the second floor, Elzinga & Volkers will lead a Life Safety Planning Meeting. Our team will identify all fire-rated and smoke-rated walls on the floor and ensure all trades onsite understand the importance of this construction throughout the project. These walls are a critical element to the overall safety of the building and can be a focal point of state and local building inspections.

Executive Summary

The grass is greener...on the other side of Maple Street! We are happy to report in this edition of New Views that the North Parking Lot is officially complete. Although we allowed staff to start parking in the lot a few weeks ago, the landscaping and concrete crews were still finishing the final touches, such as patching concrete curbs and planting grass and shrubs. If you are an early riser, you might also notice the new monument sign is illuminated to welcome you into the Gerber Memorial campus.

On Oak Street, behind the existing emergency department, we have completed the temporary ambulance drop-off area. The drop-off has a new automatic sliding door, canopy and paved loading and unloading area. Completion of this area allows us to start the emergency department addition. We are excited to begin reporting on this major piece of the project, as it progresses from a parking lot to a new state-of-the-art space.

On the second floor, crews are busy at work on the demolition of the east wing. Crews are stripping walls and finishes down to the concrete structure of the building. Soon, crews will start framing new walls and “roughing-in” the new utilities. You will then see a dramatic change start to take shape on the second floor. As always, we want to thank the Gerber Memorial staff for their patience during the project. We are enjoying the relationships that we have made and look forward to continued cooperation! - John Parker, Project Manager jparker@elzinga-volkers.com

construction site, but there are many ways to protect workers during this essential activity. First, crews “slope” the walls of the excavation so that soils don’t slide back into the hole as the crews dig. Second, two exit points are provided away from the excavation. This gives workers multiple exit routes in the event of a cave in. Finally, only qualified individuals are

allowed in the construction area during excavation and the area is properly fenced during the entire process.

Two Week Look Ahead

Over the next two weeks, crews will complete the Surgical Waiting Room and PAT offices. State inspectors will be onsite to give their final approval for the areas to be occupied. Once these areas are approved, we will relocate patients, visitors and staff and take over the remaining areas of the east wing on the second floor. In the new Endoscopy/Pre-Post OP area, crews will start framing walls and relocating utilities to accommodate the new layout. Walls will start to take shape, and you will be able to get a feel for the new patient and staff spaces. West of the existing emergency department, you will see construction fencing and heavy equipment mobilize as we begin work on the emergency department addition. This addition has a full basement so we will begin by excavating nearly 14 feet down. Crews will be exercising extreme caution, and unauthorized personnel will not be allowed in the construction area during this time. Shortly after the excavation is complete, concrete walls will rise from the ground and steel will follow soon after. - Jordan Gougeon, Assistant Project Manager jordang@elzinga-volkers.com
