And we’re back! Did you miss the Inside Scoop? It has been a while since our last update but the silver lining is that I’ve got a lot more content to share! The past few months have been exciting to say to the least. In December the construction crews put their final touches on Phase 1. Following that, the local building officials, state fire marshal and state health inspector each granted occupancy to the space without issue. Over the holiday season, the user group took a several week opportunity to prep and train within the unit. Working alongside them, our technology friends managed to dial in all the intricate computer and control systems. Finally, at the beginning of January, the first patients were welcomed on to the unit. The first baby was born January 9th, 2018 with many more to coming in the following months and years. As a member of the project team, it is amazing to think of the impact that this unit brings to the community. I mean, come on! New people being added to the planet? How exciting is that! I’m sure that to the amazing OB staff, this is just a “normal” occurrence, but I think I speak for everyone when I say that what these incredible people do is anything but “normal”. In addition to caring for patients, the MHSM staff has patiently tolerated us working along their sides as we have been drilling, cutting, carting, screwing, grinding, and sanding for months. From all of us on the construction team, I’d like to say thanks! Moving forward, we are off and running on Phase 2. As you might remember from the phasing discussion in a previous edition of Inside Scoop, Phase 2 is the smallest phase by square footage for the entire 9th floor renovation. It does, however, pack a punch for its size. Similar to Phase 1, it has the same number of structural columns that must be removed, an electrical room to relocate, main utilities to re-route and the same number of through floor shafts to re-build without the benefit of a wide-open unoccupied NICU to work in beneath us. As such, we will be working closely with the 8th floor staff over the next few months to sequentially shut down rooms in order to complete our through-floor mechanical work. Up on 9, we’re pleased to report that demo is now complete and wall framing crews are already giving shape to the future post-partum rooms. This month’s Trade Contractor Spotlight goes to Precision Commercial Flooring. Starting right after demo, Precision scarifies (grinds down) the existing concrete floors. After this is complete, they will level the floor with two coats of prep material, providing a smooth finish which aids wall layout. Additional leveling material is later added once drywall is complete. This extensive prep work and attention to detail during installation provides a beautiful and high quality finished product. Keep it up, Precision!
