Executive Summary The renovation to the north half of the 8th floor has leapt forward on a great start! Beginning in January, carpentry crews were busy assembling temporary walls that separated the construction zone from the neighboring areas. Demolition crews mobilized soon after and cart by cart, the old PMU was removed from the hospital. After only a couple of weeks, the floor space was completely cleared from wall to wall. Once empty, the re-building process was able to commence. Marking the start of the rough-in phase, a variety of tradesmen took position and began their work. Framing crews quickly set the pace on the jobsite, laying out walls and transforming the floor with every passing day. While a team of fire caulkers patched and repaired the existing floor penetrations above, concrete coring crews were busy cutting below. Plumbers began work in blocks of patient rooms on the 7th floor to coordinate and install new piping. Finally,

electricians started their rough-in process, installing conduit and boxes. Behind the scenes, design professionals, hospital staff and construction teams are working hard solving conflicts and providing support to those working in the field. In order to help maintain the current workflow, providing timely solutions to any issues that may arise is a must. It is also critical to manage long lead items. Care must be taken to actively drive and track the procurement process on certain materials or pieces of equipment. Making sure products arrive on time for installation will certainly prove to be beneficial later on. -Joe Novakoski, P.E., LEED A.P. Senior PM / Vice President

The Look Ahead

The project has been running smoothly considering all of the ongoing activity. We have been quite pleased with the workforce that our subcontractors have provided us. Equipping the job properly in the beginning phases is crucial. Looking ahead, we will be performing more scheduled shut downs. These shut downs will include water and medical gas to facilitate the new design of the rooms with showers and sinks. Mechanical and electrical trades are busy installing pipes, conduits and duct work for the heating and cooling systems. Meanwhile, carpentry crews are fastening wood and metal blocking for the finishes. We will soon begin the drywall phase, one of my favorite stages, as it will really take on the shape of things to come.

I would like to add how great the hospital staff has been to work with. Our team is literally everywhere on the 7th, 8th and 9th floors. Thank you for your patience! -Joe Shashaguay, Field Manager

Did You Know?

Ground Penetrating Radar, or GPR, is actively used on this project. GPR uses radar pulses to create an image of items below the surface. GPR devices can be used to scan a variety of materials, ranging from concrete to ice. They are used in construction to help avoid timely and costly mistakes made from accidentally cutting or drilling through existing utilities. GPR devices are operated by trained professionals. These individuals pinpoint the locations of sub-surface items by interpreting hyperbolic images shown on the equipment’s display screen. GPR is also used in other professions, including archeology, earth science and even law enforcement.

This month’s spotlight goes to the staff of River City Mechanical. Their team has been doing an awesome job, considering the challenges and complexities so far. They have been busy rerouting much of the existing mechanical and have shown extreme professionalism while working on the floors above and below. Their interaction with the hospital has been fantastic and their attention to detail has made them an asset to work with on this project.
