Looking Ahead

SAFETY Matters Surviving the Heat

Mike Roney, Field Manager miker@elzinga-volkers.com | 586-482-4102 » Over the next few weeks a fast pace schedule has been set and we will be working on rough framing of interior partitions, MEP rough-in, drywall, and interior finishes. » Due to hot water issues, which began in Phase 1, we have reached out to a Mechanical Engineer at MacMiMillan and Associates located in Bay City.

Construction workers really feel the heat during the hot, humid months of summer. Here are a few tips to help avoid dehydration and beat the heat: » Hydrate. Drink cool water frequently, even if you’re not thirsty. » Exercise. Stay in good physical condition. Extra weight means more work, sweat, and risk. » Eat right. Eat light meals during the hottest hours and avoid highfat greasy foods, which will bring on fatigue. » Avoid air conditioning. Try not to go in and out of air conditioning since it will make it more difficult for you to adjust to the heat. » Watch for Heat Exhaustion/Heat Stroke. Symptoms include dizziness, headache, sweaty skin, weakness, cramps, nausea or vomiting, and rapid heart beat. Heat stroke symptoms also include hot, dry skin, mental confusion, convulsions, and loss of consciousness. If anyone shows these signs, call 911 right away.
