THE CONNECTION EV Group Biannual Newsletter | July 2016

MESSAGE FROM MIKE... Capacity vs. Fear/Greed Each week I speak with fellow business owners who say the same thing, “We cannot find good help!” Due to the shortage of qualified candidates, they are forced to turn away work, posing a frustrating conundrum. I agree with their decision and applaud them for saying “no;” how else will they maintain a reliable brand and secure their customer’s loyalty? Some in our industry believe in taking on all of the work that they are able to acquire with the resolve that they will figure out later how to get it all done. I believe over-committing in business is a function of fear or greed. In the midst of the Great Recession, businesses struggled to find ample work to keep resources engaged. On a daily basis they were wrought with the anxiety of an unknown future. Layoffs and downsizing were the norm. Today, for the moment, work appears plentiful. “Make hay while the sun shines” is what my Grandfather used to say.

Like every other company, the EV Group wants to maximize business in this economy, but we also realize that we need to flawlessly execute any work we commit our resources to. We believe that there are times, for the good of the company that we have to say “NO” (Never Over-commit). In our business we continue to position ourselves for growth while striving to maintain brand and client loyalty. I’m really excited by what 2016/17 holds in store for us. We are selectively pursuing and placing personnel where we know we can serve clients at the highest level. We are blessed to have a magnetic culture that continues to attract excellent people, allowing us to accept even more placement opportunities. Mike Novakoski, President & CEO

Control of Hazardous Energy (Lockout / Tagout)

However, I am not sure if this statement was based in fear or greed?

Lockout-Tagout (LOTO) is a safety procedure used across industries and research settings to ensure that hazardous equipment is properly shut off and unable to be started prior to the completion of maintenance or servicing work. LOTO protects employees servicing or maintaining machines or equipment from exposure to serious physical harm or death if hazardous energy is not properly controlled. Isolated power sources are locked and a tag is placed on the lock to identify the worker who placed it. The worker holds the key for the lock to ensure that only he or she can start the machine. Employees need to be trained to ensure that they know, understand and follow the applicable provisions of the hazardous energy control procedure and the various requirement of OSHA standards related to LOTO.
