quality end product. Some materials, like brick and stucco, must be installed at a certain temperature. Crews use elaborate tents and heaters to perform this work in the winter. For concrete slabs, like the ones we are currently installing, crews use warming blankets to keep the slabs at proper temperature while they cure.
Executive Summary Paving and Concrete Slabs
The last two weeks on the HFA expansion site have been focused on two major milestones: the installation of the asphalt paving on our new loop road and the installation of concrete floor slabs. On the west side of the project site, crews from ASI, Inc. performed fine grading on the gravel base of the new road. After fine grading and a test of the soil compaction on the new road, ASI laid the first course, or base course, of asphalt paving. Next year, just before the project is completed, ASI will return to the site to complete the finish course, or what is commonly known as the wearing course. For now, the base course will give the construction crews a nice, stable surface to park and work on during the winter months.
underground utilities complete, we started work on the concrete slabs, which will become the new building floor. Crews from Rose Pest Solutions installed termite and thick vapor barriers on the soil, followed by a reinforcing steel install by Creative Cement. On Wednesday morning, the rumble of concrete signaled that our first pour was underway. We will have three more major pours every three to four days for the next two weeks. Soon, the building will start to grow upwards from this solid foundation.

Safety Spotlight A term you might hear on our site but may not be familiar with is PPE, which stands for Personal Protective Equipment. Examples of PPE include items such as gloves, high visibility clothing, foot and eye protection, protective hearing devices and hard hats. Some of these items, like hard hats and eye protection, are required 100% of the time on-site, while others, like gloves, are required only when performing certain tasks. Elzinga & Volkers exceeds MiOSHA standards when it comes to PPE to ensure that all of our workers return home safe every day.

Two Week Look Ahead
The main focus for the next two weeks is the concrete floor slabs. These are being poured one quadrant at a time, which equals approximately 11,500 square feet per day. Prior to each upcoming concrete pour, the site work contractor will spread a compacted sand base atop the underground pluming. After the sand base is in place and before the concrete slab is poured, Rose Pest Solutions will apply a termite barrier assuring the wood framing’s safety for years to come. Once this precautionary measure is in place, Creative Cement can pour the concrete floor slab. With Quadrant 4 concrete slab already poured, crews will work counterclockwise, completing Quadrant 3 next. - Jordan Gougeon, Asst. Project Manager jordang@elzinga-volkers.com
SUBCONTRACTOR
SPOTLIGHT In this issue, we would like to thank ASI, Inc. for their work on finishing our asphalt paving before the winter months hit our project site. The crews from ASI performed high quality work and completed it in a timely fashion. As mentioned
