correct position. Straightening walls and ensuring their position will ensure high quality finishes later on in the project. This step is critical in the wood framing process and one that must be performed by a qualified professional.

Executive Summary Battling the Elements

Despite the terrible weather on-site over the last two weeks, the HFA expansion construction team continues to make progress in many areas of the project. Wall framing and installing roof trusses continues throughout Quadrants 4 – 2. Plywood sheeting was installed on the roof trusses and Glasrock® sheathing was installed on the outside walls. Parts of the building are starting to feel enclosed which has allowed for other activities to begin inside the building. Crews from Elzinga & Volker’s Steel Division arrived on-site last week to begin the installation of structural steel in the building. While the building is 95% wood, there are a few areas where heavy steel is needed to achieve the open space desired by UMRC and the architect.

After prefabricating many of their components in a climate controlled shop, Allied Electric arrived on-site last week and began to rough-in electrical wiring and main feeder conduits, which brings power from the main electrical room to various subpanels around the building. Soon, the temporary power that is located in the southeast corner of the building will be distributed throughout the entire building. It has been cold, no doubt, but all of our crews continue to work hard in spite of the challenging conditions. Thank you to all the hardworking tradespeople working on the project. - John Parker, Project Manager jparker@elzinga-volkers.com

Safety Spotlight Crews from Chelsea Lumber have been utilizing a crane to place large wood trusses on the project. This has been a tricky process as we have also had high winds at the site. When the winds are strong, the crews have no choice but to shut down operations. Wind speeds are measured periodically during the day to make sure that the safety of all crane lifts are not compromised by blowing wind.

Two Week Look Ahead

Chelsea Lumber will wrap up setting the roof trusses for Quadrants 2, 3 and 4 early on in the next two weeks, allowing Kril Enterprises to follow closely behind with roofing materials. Kril will begin in Quadrant 4 with the membrane roof on the flat roof, followed by laying shingles on the sloped roof before moving on to Quadrant 3, then Quadrant 2. Allied Electric had a jump start on the electrical rough-in and Godwin Plumbing, Quality Air and Falcon Fire Protection will begin roughing-in the water, mechanical and fire suppression piping in the next few weeks. This is the beginning of a challenging phase as there are numerous components that need to be coordinated amongst the four contractors. Communication at all levels, especially between the on-site foremen, will be key to a successful rough-in. Acoustical Ceiling and Partition Company, Inc. will also be mobilizing to the site to set the metal studs that connect the existing building to the newly-framed addition. As you can see, the number of crews working on-site is increasing significantly. So let the fun begin!

SUBCONTRACTOR

SPOTLIGHT In this issue, we would like to highlight Allied Electric’s hard work. As we have reported before, Allied Electric has been working on the electrical system for a few weeks now at their home office. Workers have prewired electrical boxes and precut lengths of cabling, allowing them to now move very quickly through the in wall rough-in. In a few short weeks, our project site will get very busy, and Allied will be ahead of the game. Thank you, Allied Electric for your continued efforts on the project!
