small detail to ensure that all seams are sealed and all possible areas of water infiltration are addressed. Special attention is paid where vents, pipes and ductwork penetrate the roof to make sure that a continuous membrane is maintained. It is difficult to locate leaks after the roof is installed, so every precaution is taken now to protect this critical element of the building.

Executive Summary Dare I Say It…

With the forecast showing some signs of a break in the extremely cold weather, the construction team is ramping up man power and planning for the eventual relief from the cold and snow. Up on the roof, crews from Kril Enterprises are starting work on the flat, membrane roof system. The crews had to clear a few inches of snow and dry the plywood substructure before installing insulation and a white rubber membrane. The membrane is sealed at all the joints and creates a watertight roof that will last for decades. When the sloped portion of the roof is complete, Kril will also be responsible for installing the shingle roof materials.

metal furring channels which will later receive gypsum wall board. Crews from Godwin Plumbing, Allied Electric and Quality Air all continue their in-wall roughins. On the exterior of the building, roof trusses and the exterior sheathing continue to be installed. Keep your head down, coats zipped up and your boots on, but remember that spring is around the corner, and along with the warmer weather, exciting change will come to the HFA addition project! - John Parker, Project Manager jparker@elzinga-volkers.com

Safety Spotlight Although warmer weather is just around the corner, we thought it would be good to revisit cold weather protection one more time. Prolonged exposure to freezing or cold temperatures may cause serious health problems such as trench foot, frostbite and hypothermia. In extreme cases, including cold water immersion, exposure can lead to death. Danger signs include uncontrolled shivering, slurred speech, clumsy movements, fatigue and confused behavior. If these signs are observed, call for emergency help.

Two Week Look Ahead

As in-wall rough-ins continue throughout the project, Acoustical Ceiling and Partition will mobilize to Quadrant #4 to begin wall board in the corridor. Once the corridor’s above-ceiling cavity has been wall boarded, main roughins or “home runs” will begin. This above-ceiling cavity will receive duct mains, mechanical and plumbing piping, conduit runs and fire suppression lines. Quadrant #4 will also have hollow metal door frames installed in preparation for wall board installation along the corridor. Kril Enterprises will be just ahead of the aforementioned work installing the membrane roof over Quadrant #3. This will allow the corridor wallboard and MEP mains to continue seamlessly from Quadrant #4 to Quadrant #3. This pattern will continue counter-clockwise around the building until all trades are caught up at Quadrant #1. - Jordan Gougeon, Asst. Project Manager jordang@elzinga-volkers.com
