Safety Spotlight Every day an estimated 1,000 eye injuries occur in American workplaces. The financial cost of these injuries is enormous; more than $300 million per year in lost production time, medical expenses and workers compensation. No dollar figure can adequately reflect the personal toll these accidents take on the injured workers. Because of the high frequency of eye injuries on construction sites, Elzinga & Volkers requires all tradespeople and visitors to wear OSHA approved safety glasses while on-site.

Executive Summary Making Progress

It seems the number of crews is multiplying on site each day. Not only has fantastic progress been made on the addition, but renovations have started in the Multi-Propose Room, Dining Room and Sitting Room. On the exterior of the addition in Quadrants #2-4, house wrap and shingles have been installed, allowing interior work to further progress. On the inside of Quadrant #4, mechanical, electrical and plumbing rough-ins are nearly complete, which will allow ACP, Inc. to start installing gypsum wallboard throughout the resident rooms. Hollow metal door frames have been set along the corridor. These frames are welded type which requires them to be anchored to the wall studs prior to hanging wallboard. Hollow metal frames are typically heavier duty than their alternatives and provide a clean, seamless look.

We are hopeful that last week’s snow storm will be the last of the season and temperatures will continue to climb. Temporary enclosures were installed at the ends of Quadrants #2 and #4 to allow interior work to continue without being affected by the elements. If Mother Nature allows, the concrete slab in Quadrant #1 will finally be poured and progress will accelerate forward! - John Parker, Project Manager jparker@elzinga-volkers.com

Quality Control Indoor air quality has become a factor in many facilities. Preventative measures are taken during the construction process to reduce the amount of particulates in the air. One preventative measure is to cover open ends of installed ductwork to prevent dust from settling inside during construction activities such as drywall finishing. Another preventative measure is utilizing negative air machines in workspaces to filter the air and send it through the building’s exhaust system instead of occupied areas.

Two Week Look Ahead

Coming up in the next two weeks, activity will continue to escalate on the addition. Up on the roof, Kril Enterprises will finish the last of the roofing until Quadrant #1 has been framed. This will allow Chelsea Lumber to install windows in Quadrants #2-4 which will also finish in the next two weeks. Mechanical, electrical and plumbing rough-ins will shift from Quadrant #4 to Quadrant #3, allowing wall insulation and one of our larger milestones, Acoustical Ceiling and Partition to hang wall board, to begin in Quadrant #4.

SPOTLIGHT

Work will also continue to progress inside on the Town Square renovation as Acoustical Ceiling and Partition frame the walls that will create this new space. The MEP contractors will move in right behind the framing crew to begin rough-ins for this space. We have high hopes that this renovation in the heart of your facility will continue to go as planned!

Project Progress and Major Milestones

We understand that having a construction site within your workplace and/or living area can be challenging and even aggravating due to noise and temporary relocated workspaces. Although it may be a challenge now, the finished product will be enjoyed by
