AT THE MOVIES...

Actor / Director Clint Eastwood delves into the personal life and rise to power of J. Edgar Hoover with this biopic starring Leonardo DiCaprio as the controversial FBI Director. Rumors have long swirled around J. Edgar Hoover’s sexuality and supposed penchant for donning women’s clothing including an examination of his possibly romantic relationship with former aide Clyde Tolson. While many in the gay community welcome the controversial portrayal, the FBI is less than thrilled about the subplot. Assistant FBI Director Mike Kortan asserted, “Vague rumors and fabrications have cropped up from time to time, but there is no evidence in the historical record on this issue.” The film is written by “Milk” screenwriter Dustin Lance Black, and also costars Naomi Watts, Amie Hammer, Josh Lucas, Ed Westwick and Damon Herriman. 10 Metra Magazine, Issue # 779

Zoe Heran In this film “Tomboy,” filmmaker Celine Sciamma’s second feature, a French family with two daughters, 10-year-old Laure (Zoe Heran) and 6-year-old Jeanne ( Malonn Levanna), move to a new suburban neighborhood during the summer holidays. With her Jean Serberg haircut and tomboy ways, Laure is mistaken for a boy by the local kids and decides to pass herself off as “ Mikael,” a boy like the others but different enough to catch the attention of the leader of the girl pack Lisa (Jeanne Disson) who becomes smitten with him/her. Finding resourceful ways to hide her true self Laura takes advantage of her new identity as if the end of summer would never reveal her unsettling secret. Celine Sciamma brings light and a charming touch to this contemporary coming-of-age story, which is also about relationships between children, children and parents, and the even more complicated one between one’s heart and body.
