“DOWN FOR LIFE” - A fifteen year old girl considers an opportunity that could save her life or end it, as she attends high school in East L.A. Rascal (Jessica Romero) is the leader of a young Latina gang that she inherited from the older girls from the neighborhood. Often at battle with a rival African-American girl-gang for territorial superiority she gets a chance to escape the cycle of crime with the help of her English teacher (Danny Glover) who believes she has a real talent for writing. her English teacher lobbys for Rascal to be accepted to be in a writing workshop for promising young students in Iowa. However, the principal (Elizabeth Pena) knows Rascal best, as she has a disciplinary problem, and is against having her represent the school. Even if Rascal is able to persuade the principal that she’s worth a chance, Rascal also knows that loyalty is very important to the gang, and trying to leave could be even more dangerous than staying. 10 Metra Magazine, Issue # 761
