? E E F F O C R U O Y E IK L U O Y HOW DO E V E N T U A L L Y .. ?
Sometimes we find ourselves in a place where perhaps we are best not suited? I did last month when my girlfriend had to shoot off to hospital early one Saturday morning with her young daughter who had been taken ill during the night and the only one left to man the ship (so to speak) that is known as Mar Ines Cafeteria (up the hill from the BBVA Bank in Gran Alacant) was yours truly. Now, in my defence, I have never been left in charge of a bar/cafeteria in my life...but I gladly offered to help while she took care of her daughter. I should also state that I have never worked in a bar/cafeteria in my life (this is all part of the case for the defence by the way...). Anyway, with Ines disappearing at a rate of knots out of Gran Alacant I was yer man of the moment should you require an early morning refreshment or pick-meup at this particular hostelry, and anyway all I had to do was make the odd coffee, prepare a bit of toast and pour the odd brandy...how hard can it be. Paco was my first victim...sorry...customer and he ordered a cafe con leche and some toast with olive oil and tomato, and as I previously stated, how hard can it be..? The first explosion covered me, the counter, the wall and Paco’s clean shoes with coffee although he didn’t seem to notice as he carried on reading Informacion. You see the coffee exploded when I pressed the little button on the machine instead of gracefully and aromatically flowing from the silver thingy that you attach to it (no idea what you call it). I was covered. Paco barely raised an eyebrow so, undeterred, I carried on. It’s at this point that I should make it clear that if something doesn’t work the first time – don’t try it again. I did. Explosion number two certainly got Paco’s attention as the page he was reading in the newspaper suddenly changed colour from black and white to a browner shade of pale. Still he only raised an eyeFIESTAS brow and muttered ‘no rush...’

When he left Paco thanked me, not for the coffee but for the best morning’s entertainment he’d had in ages. Ines has locked away the meat slicer now for some strange reason... Sunshine in your Speakers? A quick message to everyone who has been in touch/listened/interacted & or made themselves known to me recently after a fantastic start to local radio for Gran Alacant in the form of Real Radio International on 87.9fm and of course those further along the coast who have been listening on 97.7fm for the past year. THANK YOU! - The response has been amazing! You know who you are bust I must pick out great Gran Alacantinos such as our very own Yorkie, John Hannon, Anthony Whittaker, Jo Jo (pop!) and of course Hans Hamers who runs the best forum on the planet! While I battled with the coffee machine I thought it best to get the toast on so at least Paco had something to eat while he waited for Dangerous Dave to suss out what is, basically, a very simple process. The toast machine ‘pinged’ at the same time as the coffee started flowing from the machine (I’d realised at this point that the silver thingy needs a filter) and so in my calm manner (Picture Corporal Jones in Dads Army) I turned and went to grab the toast rack and managed to sling to two hot pieces of bread at Paco while the coffee made its way directly into the built in drain on the machine as I hadn’t managed to get a cup in its way.

Fiscal help... SOLL ICH RESIDENT WERDEN?
CHANGES...
NOT RELATED TO TAXES THIS TIME
I can hardly believe it…it has been ten years that I have been
material for the next ten years!!
Web: www.andreaburns.es

“Get on yer bike!” by Gary Routledge www.cyclogicalcostablanca.com
Choosing your bike SUIT YOU Despite the many temptations on the internet, your local bike shop is still the best place to buy your new cycle especially if you take a long term view on warranty and after sales service. Person to person contact should ensure that you don’t get lost in the bike-purchasing woods. Before you step over the threshold, make sure you have a firm idea of your budget and what kind of bike you’re in the market
for.
Auctions
and
sites like e-bay are another option, though we would only recommend purchasing a new bike if you are an experienced mechanic. Expect to spend at least €300 on a brand new bike - anything cheaper will be of poor quality and we really can’t recommend buying a bike from
a
supermarket.
Consequently, any problems or tweaks will most likely have to be carried out by your local shop.
8
The type of bike you choose depends largely on what you’ll be using it for ie: joining a group or club and looking to race? Daily exercise or commuting? Weekend leisure rides? Short tours? Or a combination of them all? For racing and sports bikes you will not require mudguards but for everyday commuting you will want full mudguards and a rack and especially if your planning on a bit of touring. The frame will largely be dictated by the price with steel and aluminium being the most affordable, and oversized aluminium tubing dominating from about €300. As you head towards the €1000 mark you will see the appearance of carbon in the forks and possibly parts of the frame with full carbon bikes around the €1500 mark. Steel is the most forgiving of the trio and will tolerate the most neglect, as long as you don’t let it rust. Aluminium will take hard knocks in it’s stride but has to be watched more closely after about 3 years of use, as it has a limited fatigue life. Carbon is the most tempermental, as any cracks or frame damage from careless use can mean that your bike is finished. Road/Race bikes A light road bike with drop handlebars will be top of your list if your looking for a fast riding machine to race on or to do sportives, but don’t count them out for daily commuting or light touring as they can be battle hardened by fitting slightly bigger and tougher tyres or Kevlar reinforced puncture protected ones. Mountain/Hybrids If your riding involves some rougher paths or off road sections then you’d best look towards a Mountain bike or a Hybrid. A mountain bike is more rugged and robust and is almost bullet proof . They mostly come with 26inch wheels and knobbly tyres and will go almost anywhere however you will get a bit of drag on the tarred roads and the cheaper ones can be quite heavy. A Hybrid on the other hand has 28inch wheels and rolls quicker , most
have adjustable headsets , and front suspension units some also have suspension seat posts making your ride much more comfortable. The larger wheels have better rolling characteristics than 26inch mountain bike size, offering a bit more speed and a little less weight. Urban bikes For zipping around town, whether commuting or poping out to the pub or to the shops an Urban bike offers a more tarmac focused approach than a Hybrid. They’re basically an offshoot of the mountain bike, combining the stouter characteristics of an MTB frame with slightly smaller and more resistant 26inch wheels fitted with faster and narrower tyres than their knobbly counterparts, they almost match Hybrids for speed, while offering better kerb and potholehopping capability. Folding bikes are another great way to get around , you can just fold them in half and put them in the car , caravan, motorhome or even the train and as soon as you get to your destination you have a cheap , safe means of getting around with no worry about parking charges. Most fold up bikes have 20inch wheels and are comfortable however there is smaller wheeled versions on the market but they are quite hard work to cycle. Expect to pay around the €200 mark for a decent fold up bike that is Shimano equipped. E-Bikes Another option you may consider is an electric bike. E-bikes are bikes with battery powered electric motors and are finally coming of age, as designs improve and the weights come down. If you live in a really hilly area having extra power to your pedal will make all the difference when it comes to choosing whether to take your bike or take the car on short journeys. The only E-bikes worth looking at are the ones starting at approx €800 and you should ensure they have a 36volt Lithium battery as opposed to the wet cell lead ones. Again ensure these bikes are Shimano equipped.

And...
If you want to add more comfort to your cycle then it is beneficial to add a comfortable soft saddle and possibly a suspension seat post. shorts also help as do fatter tyres.
Padded
You also need to consider what sort of gears you require, in the flat areas you may not need the lowest hill climbing gears but if you are planning on hilly sportives or you have hills in your area a good spread of gears are essential. Internal gear
When deciding what sort of equipment you require on your bike, it will depend largely on what sort of riding you are going to do. The first decision you are likely to make is to go for drop handlebars as found on racing bikes, certainly if you are planning weekend sportives or planning to take part in time trials or if you just want to do some fast training this is the bar for you. Flat/straight bars and also bars with a slight rise or sit up and beg type are ideal for most other types of riding. The choice is yours and all depends on what you are going to use the bike for. One problem with flat bars is that they only offer one hand position which can tend to me uncomfortable during long distances causing pins and needles in your hands, rather than changing the bars another way to avoid this discomfort is to fit bar ends which give you a couple more hand positions. These are quite popular on mountain bikes and hybrids. Suspension forks are worth considering if you have to deal with rough terrain, or if you are using your bike offroad, although it adds extra weight to the bike it also reduces the shock/absorption on your elbows, wrists and shoulders. If your riding is mostly tarmac then it is worth considering a bike with no front suspension.
hubs are bullet proof, they require little maintenance and are available in only a select few models but they again will add weight and cost to the bike. Derailleur systems offer up to 30 gears and are generally lighter but because they are more exposed to the elements they require more frequent maintenance. Increasingly popular alternatives to both of these gear types are single speeds or fixed wheel bikes. Cycle couriers are rarely seen riding anything else nowadays as they are more or less trouble and maintenance free. Until recently rim brakes were pretty much the only option for most bikes and as long as you ensure you keep the surfaces clean they are still the business, however many bikes now come with mechanical or hydraulic disc brakes. For rapid stopping power, trouble free use and minimum servicing requirements hydraulic disc brake systems cannot be beaten but they are mainly seen on luxury commuting and touring hybrids.
We strongly recommend that you don’t just buy any bike until you have been checked as to the size of bike you require. As with all clothes and shoes sizing varies between manufacturers, so whilst you might need a 54cm frame from one brand you might need to size up or down with another brand. So before you buy a bike try them out for size. When buying from a reputable bike shop they will always size you and fit you with the proper bike, most reputable bike shops will even offer you the chance to test ride the bike which will help you to determine if the bike is suitable. Now armed with all this knowledge you should have the confidence to know what to look for, what to ask for and how to buy the right bike for you. Bikes come in all shapes and sizes which is great because then there is something to suit everyone.

OUR THOUGHTS
What are you thinking? • Every thought we have creates the words we speak. • Every thought we have creates every action we take. • Every action we take creates a reaction. • Every thought, word, action, reaction, creates our lives! How’s life? Bad? Fair? Good? Great? Life should be great and can be great with the choices we make! The main choice being our choice of thoughts. I live my life by thinking in a certain way, a thought pattern that drives me to everything I desire in life, rather than everything I do not want. I formed a habit of thinking in a certain way. It wasn’t easy but I never gave up! I used Willpower! If you work out in the gym it’s hard at first, but depending on your desire, the more effort you put in, the bigger the results! You realise what wonderful gift willpower is. When used, one feels amazing! The trouble is most of us do not have any goals in life, nothing to work towards, nothing to use these amazing gifts we hold waiting to burst out - willpower, imagination, intuition, perception… I could go on! We are creative beings with minds to THINK! Unfortunately, what we think about are our perceptions of what we see and hear in the news, on the TV, etc. Negativity putting you in a state of fear. Fear is debilitating, it throws barriers up to stop us from reaching our goals. Goals are the keys to direction in life. Without goals we are the sheep following the masses, following others who never have a clue where they are going. We lose faith. Faith is believing! We all seem to think that seeing is believing. I see it as believing in something so much that you make it happen. Having faith and belief in oneself, holds the truest wisdom to the ultimate power of success! When we can cast away our fears and doubts, stand up and brush ourselves down when we have knockbacks, only then, can we attain our goals. Everyone passes failure on their way to success,

in fact look upon failure as just a way of telling you there is a better direction for you just waiting around the corner. I study the greatest philosophers and scientists in quantum physics, from the past to this day. They all agree on one thing - WE BECOME WHAT WE THINK ABOUT! Sometimes we read or hear things that really ring home true…. My life has changed, how about you?!!!!! What are you thinking now? IT’S JUST BECAUSE YOU STOPPED Thoughts are your existence, your happiness, and your sorrows They were your past; your now, and your every tomorrow You have manifested with thought, your life so far You have thought your way to who you are Now ask yourself what you want from here See your vision crystal clear Using your imagination; it’s up to you, your life’s creation Understanding the law of attraction Is being able to turn your thoughts into action Not only that, I’m not yet through You have to believe your thoughts come true Think and Act to make it real, you’ll know it’s working by the way you feel Every single waking hour, act the part, you have the power You will only make it to the top, to love thinking in this way and never stop Remember every thought you take, is your script, your life, make no mistake It’s challenging, exciting, yet hard to do How much passion do you have in you? To make your wishes and dreams come true For whomever acts upon this theory, make it to the top For all who try and don’t succeed It’s just because you stopped! 1. If boiling water is poured into a thick drinking glass as well as a very thin wine glass, of the two, which is more likely to crack? 2. I’m always in charge, I’m never in debt. I’m known as the first amongst all my kind. I’m found within cars, But never in buses. I’m not used in Mexico, I’m used in Palestine. What am I? 3. What one word has the most letters in it? 4. The more of these you take, the more appear behind you 5. My first is in wield, sever bones and marrow. My second is in blade, forged in cold steel. My third is in arbalest, and also in arrows. My fourth is in power, plunged through a shield. My fifth is in honour, and also in vows My last will put an end to it all. What am I? 6. A certain number has three digits. The sum of the three digits equals 36 times this number. Seven times the left digit plus 9 is equal to 5 times the sum of the two other digits. 8 times the second digit minus 9 is equal to the sum of the first and third. What is the number? 7. My head and tail both equal are, My middle slender as a bee. Whether I stand on head or heel Is quite the same to you or me. But if my head should be cut off, The matter’s true, though passing strange Directly I to nothing change. What Am I?
1. The thick glass is more likely to crack since glass is a poor conductor of heat. In a thin glass, the heat passes more quickly from the glass into the surrounding air, causing the glass to expand equally. When hot water is poured into a thick glass, the inner surface expands, but the outer surface does not. It is this extreme stress on the glass that causes it to crack. 2. The letter ‘a.’. 3. alphabet . 4. Steps. 5. A weapon! 6. This one is fairly easy - 324 is the answer.. 7. The figure eight. SOLUTIONS:

GROWING OLD IN ENGLAND Someone asked the other day, ‘What was your favourite fast food when you were growing up?’ ‘We didn’t have fast food when I was growing up,’ I informed him. ‘All the food was slow.’ ‘C’mon, seriously. Where did you eat?’ ‘It was a place called “at home,”’ I explained. ‘Mum cooked every day and when Dad got home from work, we sat down together at the dining room table, and if I didn’t like what she put on my plate I was allowed to sit there until I did like it.’ By this time, the other person was laughing so hard I was afraid he was going to suffer serious internal damage, so I didn’t tell him the part about how I had to have permission to leave the table. But here are some other things I would have told him about my childhood if I figured his system could have handled it: Some parents NEVER owned their own house, never wore Levis, never set foot on a golf course, or had a credit card. Pizzas were not delivered to our home... But milk was.

The siesta...and why? Do the Spanish really sleep during the siesta?
The siesta is often thought of as one of the most famous aspects of Spanish life - that quiet period in afternoon when everything shuts in Spain, in theory so people can go and have something to eat and then grab a nap. Many Spanish still take the siesta very seriously but, in reality, do the Spanish really go to sleep at this time? For starters, when is the Siesta? There are two periods of siesta in Spain z - siesta for shops and businesses, during which time many people go to a bar or restaurant, and then siesta for the restaurants, who obviously can’t rest when everyone wants to come and eat. The siesta for some shops and businesses is from roughly 2pm until 5pm while in bars and restaurants they tend to close from about 4pm until about 8 or 9pm. (Remember all of this depends too on whereabouts you are in Spain – cities are different as are some coastal towns).
z
z
Why the Siesta? - The Traditional Reason As we know Spain is a hot country and especially in the mid-afternoon. And so the traditional reason for the siesta was for workers in the fields to shelter from the hottest part of the day and after the siesta they would then feel refreshed and could carry on working until quite late in the evening, longer than they would have been able to without the siesta and in cooler, more comfortable conditions of course
z
The Modern Reason /Of course people do still work in the fields of Spain but this doesn’t explain why shops and businesses in towns and cities close down today. Obviously offices could get hot too, but with the arrival of air conditioning there really was no reason to take a break - so why do some places still do it? The main reason is that the Spanish do like to have a long lunch and especially with their family. At home a large meal will be prepared and that can often go on for a couple of hours and if you’ve ever done that (Sunday lunch, Christmas perhaps) to go straight back to work would be hard and a rest is needed after consuming as much. Another reason put forward as to why the Spanish like to stop for siesta is that it
is not so much out of needing a rest but wanting to stop for a while in order that they can stay up later in the evening. And I guess if that theory is to be believed then after a late night an afternoon nap can be very welcome...if not essential! The Spanish nightlife goes on literally allnight and often tourists and newcomers to Spain are surprised to see the streets, bars and restaurants just starting to fill up at midnight and then they are even more surprised to see ‘abuelos’ (grandparents) still out at 3am, but then why wouldn’t they if they can count on a siesta? Another reason for the siesta is that there was a law in the past that limited shop trading times to 72 hours per week and just eight Sundays a year. With these regulations in place businesses saw the sense in closing during the quiet periods – when it’s very hot - and then they would stay open later. In July 2012, the law on Spanish business hours was relaxed and traders were allowed to stay open for 90 hours a week and open on ten Sundays a year. Does that mean it’s the end of the siesta? In truth, the siesta had been less and less common with modern businesses wanting to deal with other businesses around Europe and beyond and also of course the job market demands upon many means that many people are unwilling or unable to take long lunches, also air conditioning becoming the norm has helped workers to get through the hottest part of the day. The gradual disappearance of the siesta has not changed the late-night lifestyle, which means the Spanish sleep an average of one hour less per day than other European countries.
z
z
Even before the law change, the siesta was becoming less and less frequent in places such as Madrid and Barcelona and of course the big supermarkets and department stores in much of the country have for a long time stayed open during the siesta. A good tip for visitors is to go food shopping in the afternoons in winter, when the heat isn’t stifling as many Spaniards will stay away during this time. But be careful, as many stores still will be closed and you may not quite get everything done.

Continuing with our simplicity theme, our recipe of the month is a delicious meal ready from fridge to plate in just over 20 minutes.
1. Place 1 chicken breast per person into an oven tray. Add 2 slices of lemon, season with salt and pepper and enough white wine to cover the bottom of the tray. 2. Cover with foil and put in a pre-heated oven at 200ºC for approx 20minutes.
Fads and fashions come and go but some things endure. Prawn cocktail is as popular now as ever and can be adapted in many ways. Try adding diced melon and apple with prawns to marie rose sauce or lemon mayo. This mix can be served in a baguette or with chopped tomato and cucumber as a starter or a larger portion with a mixed salad as a refreshing meal for the summer.
3. Whilst the chicken is cooking, mix 3 tablespoons of honey, 3 tablespoons of wholegrain mustard and 3 pinches of curry powder together. When the chicken is cooked remove the foil and coat the chicken with the honey mix.
Marie rose sauce is easy too. Tomato ketchup, mayonnaise, salt, pepper and a squeeze of lemon juice. Try adding some brandy or tabasco for an individual taste. Or try a couple of squeezes of lemon to some mayonnaise for an alternative. Our tip for this month will enable you to have fresh basil ready to hand whenever required. Using a stick blender, blender blend olive oil and basil to create a purée. Pour this into ice moulds and freeze. When frozen pop into a freezer bag. When you need basil remove a cube from the freezer and pop into the dish you are preparing.

THE PROBLEM WITH SPEAKING ENGLISH Japanese eat very little fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than us. Mexicans eat a lot of fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than us. Chinese drink very little red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than us. Italians drink excessive amounts of red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than us. Germans drink beer and eat lots of sausages and fats and suffer fewer heart attacks than us. CONCLUSION: Eat and drink what you like. Speaking English is apparently what kills you. An Englishman, Irishman, Welshman, Scotsman were captured while fighting in a far-off foreign land, and the leader of the captors said, ‘We’re going to line you up in front of a firing squad and shoot you all in turn. But first, you each can make a final wish.’ The Englishman responds, ‘I’d like to hear “God Save The Queen” just one more time to remind me of the auld country, played by the London All Boys Choir. With Morris Dancers Dancing to the tune.’ The Irishman replies, ‘I’d like to hear “Danny Boy” just one more time to remind me of the auld country, sung in the style of Daniel O’Donnell, with Riverdance dancers skipping gaily to the tune.’ The Welshman answers, ‘I’d like to hear “Men Of Harlech” just one more time to remind me of the country, sung as if by the Treorchy Male Voice Choir.’ The Scotsman says quickly, ‘I’d like to be shot first.
