483 Piccadilly Road
Geography 483 Piccadilly Road is located in the heart of the Adelaide Hills, South Australia. Due to this, the surrounding terrain is mountainous, creating a sense of being away from the city, despite only being located 17.2km from the Central Business District. The plot of land itself is located in a flat valley, nestled between the townships of Uraidla and Crafers. The direct land itself is flat, however with Mount Lofty to the west and extensive hills to the east, as seen on the contour diagram, allowing a development to be created with relative ease. The plot of land is currently a grassland that is situated a meter and half below Piccadilly Road. The site is approximately 180 meters east to west, and 250 meters north to south, creating a square meterage of 30,600m2. The climate of the site is temperate, slightly cooler than the rest of Adelaide due to the higher altitude, being at 600 meters above sea level. The mean maximum winter temperature is 12° and the mean summer temperature is 25°, as compared to the 16° and 27° respectively for the Adelaide Plains.
Context The majority of the site is currently privately owned yet undeveloped, as grassland that is unused for farming. There is 1 home unfortunately located on the southern end of the site, with the southern end of the site currently engaged as a small scale farm. We intend on reaching out to the owner to come to a deal on the use of the site, with the potential for farming to be a part of the rehabilitation process of our proposal. Everything surrounding acquisition and demolition is subject to the Adelaide Hills Council’s approval. One of the key regulations surrounding this is the aim to preserve all suitable farmland, which correlates to the plan for residents to engage in farming as an aspect of their rehabilitation. The building that is situated on our site is not heritage listed, so this will most likely work to our advantage.

Stop 30E and 30F for the Adelaide Metro Bus Service are located on the road serving the 866 Route bus, however it is situated a kilometre southbound from the site. We wish to ensue in negotiations with the Adelaide Metro to create a stop outside 483 Piccadilly Road. As the site is sandwiched between Uraidla, Stirling and Crafers, multiple services are available in close proximity to the site, with Stirling being a key centre of trade for the Adelaide Hills, particularly notable for a large scale Woolworths and a recently renovated library, accessible by the 866 bus service. Stirling is also home to a multi-use hospital which will be used as a hub for the medical staff on call at the centre upon competition. Stirling is located 5 km from the site, a 7 minute drive along Piccadilly road.

Design Outcome
The final design achieved the goal of creating a space with the site at the forefront of the creative process. The spaces created by the seperate buildings are thought of as an extrusion of the ground plane, created out of timber and rammed earth, thinking about it as if they emerged from the site. The idea of a complimentary garden came later in the design process, with the need arising for a space that is a continuation of the ideas explored when creating form. The garden thrives in native biodiversity, with local plant life key to this. The grass itself is weeping grass, local to the area, with Spiny-head Mat-rush long grass filling out the landscape. A central gravel path crosses through this garden, encouraging connectivity between the spaces, with the long grass still maintaining a sense of privacy with this idea.
Design Outcome- Spacial Breakdown 2
The design itself made up of 3 buildings all serving different purposes. The site has a building for therapy spaces that can be used for both group and individual therapy, as well as administration. The second building is the main co-living hub of the site, with a large kitchen designed for group involvement. Cooking is a key aspect of the facility and rehabilitation process, teaching cooking as a basic skill that can be cultivated and transferred back into the domestic setting. As well as this, building 2’s second level is residential, with room for two residents up to a maximum of eight.
1
Building 3 is purely residential with singular rooms and group rooms. The idea behind this is to always be able to cater to different needs and preferences, as comfort and care is instrumental to the rehabilitation process.
2
It was crucial in the design process to ensure that a level of privacy was still considered. Due to that, bedding can be interchanged from room to room to cater to these individual needs. It is however the aim to cultivate an environment in which the individual feels comfortable interacting with a diverse group of other people, representative of a social mix on the outside. Being with other people is key to rehabilitation, aiming to allow interpersonal relationships to thrive. The spaces in building 3 are more tailored to individual or couple living spaces, with building 2 being more of a family space with more spacious rooms.
