ONE COMMUNITY, INDIVISIBLE

From Your 2022 Board of Directors We’re excited to begin a new era in landscaping at Somersett with a new landscaping contractor and a new management structure. Those pesky landscape and irrigation issues that have plagued us for some time now will be addressed with an enhanced and expanded team and according to specific codified expectations. A big welcome to Reliance Landscaping, beginning service on January 1, 2022. A new Somersett Board was seated last November, including new members Anna Olea-Moger as VP, and Clint Maples who will be serving as our treasurer. Present members Jacob Williams (VP), Bill O’Donnell (secretary), and I will continue our hard work on the Board. Strategic planning took place in December to set the direction and priorities of this Board for the benefit of Somersett in 2022. Please support our efforts and let us know what we’re doing right and what needs attention. We work for you, and your feedback is valued. It also helps us get this right. You will also find in this issue a calendar of Board and committee meetings for the 2022 year, and all unitowners are welcome to attend. We also have new management, led by former city manager Nancy Kerry, with the assistance of Taylor Association Management. Nancy is building a new team, upgrading our systems and controls, and taking things to the next level piece-by-piece. It’s a huge undertaking and we’re asking for your patience as we ascend a steep

learning curve. Progress is going well, even as there is still much in front of us. Also, please welcome Ron Eckhart to Somersett as our operations manager. Ron brings a diverse skill set, including gates experience, communication and electronics, construction expertise, pool know-how, and much more. Ron formally managed Somersett in this position for many years and is familiar with our systems and needs. We are grateful to have Ron on Team Somersett once again. Somersett’s fiscal situation is healthy with adequate reserves and working capital. That said, a reminder that our payment address and accounts changed, as well as the assessment amount, so please check to make sure your monthly assessment payments are going through and contact us at 787-4500 if you still need to update your payment methods. Keep an eye on your calendar for the many events in Somersett scheduled this winter and throughout the year. We’re looking forward to seeing you at one of these events or at the Club soon. From your Board,

Hunter Edgar

Club Manager: My job is to oversee and execute all onsite amenity functions. My goal is to create a welcoming, fun, and safe place for residents to enjoy all that Somersett has to offer. Fun fact about me: I enjoy hunting, fishing, and camping.

[ MEET TEAM SOA ] With the move to self-management, Somersett Owners Association now has a team of staff members who work directly for the Association. You may have been wondering who they are and what their responsibilities are. Here’s a quick intro to a few members of Team SOA.

Ron Eckhardt

Operations Manager: My mission is to maintain and improve the Association’s physical amenities by working with the Board of Directors, various committees, management staff, co-workers, and vendors. I strive to provide a positive experience for all Somersett residents. Fun fact about me: I enjoy camping and music festivals.

Nancy Kerry

General Manager: My job is team leader, community facilitator, Board and community relations, problem-solver, team and community advisor. We strive to keep things on track and being as responsive as possible to the variety of community and Board member needs. Fun fact about me: Lived in Belgium for 18 months when my kids were very young to broaden their world view. I knew I wasn’t successful when my son (who was 8 at the time) got to London for a visit and he was really excited to go to a taco shop.

Sean Leonard

Community Relations Liaison: In my current role, I am the first point of contact for resident inquiries and questions and am also managing our residents’ accounts and payment processing. Fun fact about me: When I am not working, I enjoy trap shooting, ceramics, painting, and music festivals.

Jessica McCarron

Assistant General Manager: I am currently heading the Finance/Budget Committee and the AGC Committee along with assisting the Community Manager where needed. I am driven by excellence and take pride in providing the best service as possible for the community. Fun fact about me: I have been out of the country three times; my favorite place was Italy. Molto bene! (it means “very good”).

Robin Bolson

Communications Manager: My goal is to reach as many homeowners as I can with Association news through enewsletters, Somersett.org, the MySomersett Facebook page, surveys, flyers/posters, this magazine and more. This Association places great value in communications, which I support and appreciate. Fun fact about me: When I was 19, I biked 1,200 miles in Europe with a German tour group, sleeping at night in tents (no air mattresses!). I pedaled through England, across France (one small village mistook us for the Tour de France) and finally, up and down the Alps in Switzerland. There were no ebikes back then – it was just me and my Schwinn Sprint!

Devon Young

Youth Coordinator: I organize activities, events, and camps for the children of the community. Fun fact about me: In my free time, I enjoy hiking.

Cassie Webb

Front Desk Concierge: My job includes greeting residents and helping them find their way around the Club, its facilities, amenities, and events. I also answer calls, help new and prospective residents, answer questions, and help out wherever I am needed to help keep the Club running smoothly day to day! Fun fact about me: If I could be any animal, I would want to be a cat.

Devon Scott

Front Desk Concierge: I’m here to welcome everyone with a smile and help them with whatever they may need. Fun fact about me: Before moving to Reno in 2020, I was employed in the Paso Robles Wine industry, making wine and working in a number of tasting rooms. 5

TIPS FROM THE COUNTRY CLUB Putting

By Stuart Smith – PGA Director of Golf

R

emember the hips move rotationally forward and backward in the golf swing as opposed to sideways—right and left. Too many times I see students trying to restrict hip movement altogether. For a right handed golfer the right hip in the back swing will release rotationally backwards and pressure will then increase in the right side/leg/foot. This allows the upper body more rotation as well allowing for the club to more easily travel on the correct path. As the player transitions into the downswing and to the left side pressure moves into the front of the left foot and then quickly the left hip moves backwards taking the weight to the left heel on the follow through. Only during that small transition of pressure to the lead leg are the hips moving left (or recentering) prior to the left hip moving backwards.

6

TRY THIS SIMPLE DRILL... 1) Stand in golf posture with your hands on your hips 2) Use your hands to rotate your hips clockwise keeping both left and right foot down. Pressure should be felt on inside of entire right foot. Pressure built in right heel. 3) Now move the pressure to the front of your left foot—a re-centering or small transfer move. 4) With both hands rotate your hips counter clockwise with pressure moving to your left heel while rolling up onto your right toe.

Play the Tom Kite-designed Championship Country Club Course Remember all Somersett residents have access to playing the Championship Country Club Course four times per year. Each resident may book a foursome of players at a rate of $80 per player (in season) and $50 per player (off season November 15–March 1). This includes green fee, driving range usage and golf cart. We take tee times for residents four days in advance at 787-1800, ext. 2. Men, please remember our simple dress code of no denim, collared golf shirts and caps worn forward at all times. For the ladies no denim, no spaghetti strapped tops, bare midriffs, short shorts. Proper footwear such as golf shoes or tennis shoes is required. Please be advised we are cart path only November through the month of March.

Driving Range Somersett residents are encouraged to utilize the driving range at the Country Club. In the off season November through approximately April all residents may utilize the mats on the South side of the driving range—a short walk up from the Ridgefield Trail parking lot. The North side of the driving range will be closed in the off season. Juniors MUST be accompanied by an adult. In season complimentary range usage will be offered on the cushioned mat located at the North side of the driving range ONLY.

We will provide shuttle service during operating hours May through October. Access to the turf range, putting green and chipping green is available for a cost of a $10 per person per day fee payable at the golf shop prior to usage. Juniors again must be accompanied by an adult. The turf is available May through October ONLY. Men, please remember our simple dress code of no denim, no jogging suits, collared golf shirts and caps worn forward always. For the ladies no denim, no jogging suits, no spaghetti strapped tops, bare midriffs, short shorts. Proper footwear such as golf shoes or tennis shoes is required.

Winter/Snow Season We kindly ask that you refrain from winter activities on both of our golf courses during the winter season. We do not allow tubing, tobogganing, sledding, saucering, skiing, snowboarding, etc. on either golf course in the winter. Damage caused by this activity becomes apparent in the Spring and playing conditions are greatly sacrificed. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Happy Holidays...

and thank you for your continued support this past year.

COMMUNITY PROFILE

12

Jenny Williamson is a Somersett resident and also the Founder & CEO of Courage Worldwide, Inc., an organization that rescues children from child sex trafficking – here in the U.S. and around the world. In 2005, Courage Worldwide was founded to help people find their purpose. Jenny is a certified life coach and was working with individual clients and corporations to help them live a life of purpose. Then in 2007, she heard she lived in a world where children were sold for sex and vowed to do something—she vowed to build them homes and call them family. In 2008, after researching the issue of human trafficking, she changed the mission of her 501c3 to one where children who had been abused in this horrific manner might find a place of hope and healing; where they too could discover their unique purpose. In 2010, two residential homes were opened under the umbrella of Courage Worldwide— homes called Courage House. One was located in Northern California and one in Tanzania, Africa. The physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual repercussions caused by the trauma of sexual exploitation and commercial trafficking are extreme, devastating, and, without proper intervention—lasting. The healing process is long, difficult, and takes a great deal of courage to embark upon. At Courage House a family environment was created in a group setting to facilitate healing. Courage House is not just a structure or building, a program or approach; it is a place where hope is given, healing is offered, and lives are restored. It is a community of girls and young women who not only share a similar past but now share the common purpose of finding their true identity and fulfilling their destiny

while embarking on a journey of healing. Here they find the courage to confront the chaos of their past and pain. Courage House offers a comprehensive, holistic approach, which encompasses each resident’s own unique physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual needs. Each campus is a home, a community where the girls learn to be a family, and how to have and participate in healthy relationships. They gather each evening after a full day of therapy, school, and recreational activities to eat dinner and express their “grate-fulls”; a treasured tradition at Courage House for staff and the girls. Courage House is currently home to over 60 girls and young women—along with their children. Our youngest resident is 8 years old. Realizing that many Courage House residents didn’t have families equipped to help them through the healing process and transition to independence, Courage Worldwide opened transition homes—Courage House Too—for residents becoming 18 years of age. Here they are equipped to pursue their academic and/or vocational dreams. In 2021, Courage Worldwide realized a long-term vision by opening its first Courage Café, located in Tanzania, Africa, at the base of Mt. Kilimanjaro. The cafés are designed to provide a funding stream that is not dependent upon donations. Courage Café is Courage Worldwide’s physical presence in the community and provides a way to engage the public on an ongoing and consistent basis. This is crucial to raising awareness about the crime of sex trafficking and its long-term impact upon its victims. The café provides a tangible vehicle for patrons to participate in the rescue and restoration of children who have been trafficked for sex in the local community. Since Courage Houses do not allow tours or visits, it is often difficult for the public to feel connected to the organization in addition to the victims it serves. Courage Café allows for that connectivity. In addition to the Café, Courage Worldwide has launched Courage Coffee as another funding stream to help rescue and restore more of these vulnerable children.

How You Can Help You can help a child today by donating today at courageworldwide.org take-action/donate or by buying a bag of coffee at https://courageproducts.myshopify.com/ pro.../courage-coffee

Anna OLEA-MOGER

SOA Vice President (elected in November 2021) OCCUPATION: Retired as of February 2018. Formerly served as City Clerk for two California cities: Rio Vista & Rancho Cordova.

ORIGINALLY FROM: Salinas, Calif. (35 years); Placerville, Calif. (30 years).

FAMILY: I am married for 39 years to retired Recreation & Parks Director Robert Moger. Together we have enjoyed hiking, canoeing, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing in the Sierra Nevadas. I am a sister to two brothers, one older living in San Jose and one younger living in Scottsdale, Ariz., and I am a grandmother to a 16-yearold lovely young lady living in Incline Village who loves playing competitive volleyball throughout Nevada.

WHY DID YOU RUN FOR THE BOARD? I have spent the majority of my adult life serving the public. Serving on the SOA Board is a continuation of that passion and interest.

HOBBIES: I enjoy reading, cooking, baking, and getting out on Somersett’s trail system with our four-legged companion, Dreya, a Labrador retriever.

WHAT STRENGTHS/SKILLS DO YOU BRING TO THE BOARD? I understand statutes and governing documents that form the foundational aspects of an elected body’s jurisdictional and fiduciary responsibilities. As a City Clerk, I was responsible for ensuring the City Council met its legal requirement for noticing of meetings, for providing access to and archiving of official records, and for conducting local elections. The SOA Board has many similar responsibilities.

SOMETHING PEOPLE MIGHT BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU: I own a Harley Davidson Sportster and have enjoyed many rides throughout California’s backroads. It was my 40th birthday present from my husband and my mother didn’t talk to him for several months! Once she learned I passed the motorcycle safety classes with flying colors, she blessed my motorcycle riding.

YEARS IN RENO: Part-time for four years; full-time for three years.

OCCUPATION: Entrepreneur ORIGINALLY FROM: The Bay Area, California WHY DID YOU PICK SOMERSETT? It’s a beautiful community and a great place to raise a family.

Dave ARMSTRONG

MY GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENT: First and foremost, my kids—Jordyn and Spencer. Secondly, it would be founding Lido Bay Wine, a boutique winery, over a decade ago now. My third and most recent accomplishment is launching Gambi’s restaurant, right here in Somersett. Gambi’s is a place where friends and family can come in and indulge in a delicious meal, uncork a bottle of fine wine, enjoy the moment, and make great memories. FAVORITE ACTIVITIES? I am a committed reveler of the good life! I love fine wine. I started Lido Bay because I wanted to create wines that challenged convention. Individual beauties. Uncorked treasures. This is Lido Bay. I also love really good food! I love the hospitality surrounding wine and food—one of my favorite activities is sharing that with other people. At Gambi’s it’s always fun, it’s always new, and it’s always decadent. SOMETHING PEOPLE MIGHT BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT ME: I like to binge-watch the Hallmark Channel over the holidays because I’m a big romantic at heart! WHERE DOES THE NAME GAMBI COME FROM? The infamous Italian pirate, Vicenzo Gambi! Maybe in modern times, they would have called him Vinny? He was notorious and made his mark in history, and Gambi’s restaurant plans on doing the same. WHERE DID YOUR LOVE OF PIRATES COME FROM? One night I was out on my boat in the Bay at sunset. I was sipping a Rhone-style wine that fateful evening. I decided then and there I would make wine. Watching the water glistening, the bay stretching out to sea, the moonlight dancing off the stillness, and the ships on the horizon with masts reaching toward the sky... it was the pirate lifestyle. Unbound by convention and limitless possibilities. I wanted to capture all of that into one transportive lifestyle experience—hence Lido Bay was born, and now Gambi’s is open and summoning all revelers! WHAT LIES AHEAD? Only the sea will tell! 22

Pickleball: Pickleball is a beginner-friendly racquet sport that combines elements of badminton, tennis and ping pong. Pickleball is open to anyone who wants to play—come check it out!

Power Cycle: A condensed spin class that uses effective bursts of strength training while spinning. Tabata/HIIT: Tabata and HIIT use short intense anaerobic exercise with even shorter recovery periods. With a variety of exercises and methods for this training, you’ll always be targeting major muscle groups for a total body workout. Yoga: A Hatha based yoga class focusing on foundational yoga postures practicing alignment, strength and flexibility in the body. Breathing techniques and meditation are also integrated. An emphasis on simplicity, repetition, and ease of movement. Zumba®: Latin rhythms and easy to follow moves, Zumba® keeps everyone motivated by creating a dance party atmosphere. REMINDERS: Heavy colognes/perfumes should not be worn during class. All participants are asked to wipe down equipment before and after use. Cleaned equipment should be returned to its’ original location after class. Cell phones should be put on silent and should not be used during class; if you have an emergency please take your call into the hallway.

Winter Pool Hours

Lap Pool and Upper Spa 8 am–7 pm daily, depending on weather.

Lap Swim Lap Swim is by reservation only. Reservations start at 8 am with the last available time slot at 6 pm (the pool closes at 7 pm). One session per resident per day. Reservations may be made through Zen Planner or over the phone (787-4500).

Lap Swim Etiquette Please be courteous to other lap swimmers when there is only one lane in use. Circle swimming is a good rule of thumb when

there are multiple swimmers in one lane. Please stay to the right of the blue lane guide when this is appropriate.

AQUATIC RULES Upper Spa Rules 1. Extended exposure to hot water or vapors may be detrimental to the health of elderly persons and persons with heart conditions, diabetes or high or low blood pressure. 2. People with skin, ear, genital or other body infections, open sores or wounds should not use the hot tub due to the possibility of spreading infection.

Best

3. Do not ingest water by mouth as this can cause infection and illness. Parents are to warn children not to allow water in their mouths. 4. The heat of the hot tub water speeds up the effects of alcohol and can cause sleepiness, dizziness and unconsciousness. 5. Horseplay, splashing, swimming and diving are not permitted in the spas.

Aquatic Weather Policy Ice: Management reserves the right to close the pools at any time due to cold temperatures causing ice on the pool deck.
