Suddenly Summer Chilly weather persisted late this year which

made the emergence of summer seem sudden, but also welcome. Some of our spring plantings and color spots required a “reset” because of freezing nights. The landscaping is coming back nicely, and efforts continue to bring the irrigation systems back to par and replant trees where required. We’re back on track now and looking forward to a beautiful, busy, fun-filled summer. Meanwhile, keep an eye out for information about the many community events coming up, including concerts on the green (Aug. 13 and Sept. 17) and the annual car show (July 16). Also, watch for the now famous golf cart Sunset Cruise (Aug. 30), and a trip to see the Reno Aces (July 23). We’ve completed our roster of new summer staff at the Club and training for scores of new lifeguards. We’re ready for the many summer activities. Thank you to the many people who stepped forward to help this community by coming on as a lifeguard, camp counselor or other staff member. Also, thanks go out to our management and resort team members who have provided the dedication and guidance to get us ready and fully staffed for summer. The season kickoff was Memorial Day at the pool, and we hope you were able to join us! The snack bar was remodeled to provide a greater offering of poolside food this year. The first phase of the pool deck patio remodel is completed and is providing more space and shade in the pool areas. Key cards are being rolled out gradually. This will allow better and more controlled access to the Club at Town Center,

the gym, and eventually, the pool areas and tennis courts. Homeowner access cards are available at the front desk. We are also pushing ahead for camera monitoring of the play pool, spas, and lap pool; as well as the “beta site” for private street gates. “Patience” is the mantra of 2022, and like many technologies these days, the rollout is slower than expected. Nevertheless, we are seeing constant progress and receiving good customer support. Fire Station 19 of the Reno Fire Department at Somersett Parkway and Hawk Meadow Trail will soon be fully staffed and ready for service in the heart of Somersett. This will allow for quicker response times and greater fire and emergency services, particularly in the western portion of Somersett. We are appreciative of the many efforts by the city to get this ramped up and fully operational. Meanwhile, our fire fuel mitigation efforts continue as we work to reduce the biggest risks and address these on a multiyear basis. Kudos and thanks to Facilities Committee member Kevin McCarthy for leading this effort, helping to assemble a task force across all stakeholders, producing a cohesive plan, and collaborating with the official firefighting entities and contractors. We’re on our way to becoming a Firewise USA®-recognized community. Board Vice President Jacob Williams has been working with the City of Reno and Vice-Mayor Neoma Jardon to realize cooperative benefits for Somersett, including art and benches at Somersett West Park, speed control monitors along the parkways, and funds to allow more crosswalk flashers. As summer goes into full swing, please drive aware and watch your speed (authorities are taking note). We hope you get out there and enjoy Somersett and all it has to offer this summer. For the Board and Staff, Cheers!

Golf Tip

Wednesdays July 20 & August 24, 5:30-6:30 pm This golf program is designed for small children and it is one of the best opportunities to get your child involved in a game that will last a lifetime. Somersett Golf and Country Club’s PGA professionals are proud to devote their time to your little ones! This class is best suited for ages 3 to 6. Meet at the Golf Shop at 5:30 pm and take the shuttle ride with the pros to the Driving Range. We will exercise, hit some golf balls, enjoy a drink and snack break, and finish off with a short-game contest. We will do our best to provide clubs, however, providing your own equipment is best. See you there.

By Stuart Smith – PGA Director of Golf

LET’S LOOK AT THE DOS: 1)

The Pitch Shot As we find ourselves in the middle of the season, let us quickly look at a finesse shot from around the green. A common shot — especially at the Country Club and Canyon 9 — is the short pitch shot. A pitch shot is required when the distance from the ball to the front edge of the green is greater than the distance from the front edge to the target. This shot requires height to carry the apron/ fairway/rough, land on the green, and remain close to the hole. Dave Pelz, a renowned short-game instructor, will tell you that the most common shot around the green is 9-11 yards.

6)

Select one of your most lofted clubs — either a Sand Wedge or Lob Wedge. Although you may have a Pitching Wedge it is not the best choice here. A sand or lob wedge will have approximately 10 degrees more loft making it easier to get the ball in the air. There is also more weight distributed at the bottom of the club. Keep ball position center to the left of center in your stance. At address position, keep club shaft vertical without a forward lean. Keep weight on the lead side — no shifting when hitting this shot. Allow the clubhead to slide underneath the ball, thus returning the shaft to vertical at impact with the ball. Lastly, turn through to face the target to support the motion.

Implementing these techniques will allow you to be successful around the greens hitting nice high soft-pitch shots. Your scores will come down!

Play the Tom Kite-designed Championship Country Club Course

Somersett residents have access to playing the Championship Country Club Course six times per year per SOA/Country Club agreement — four times you may schedule a tee time and two times you may play as a guest of a member. Each resident may book up to a foursome of players at our accompanied guest rate of $80 per player. This includes green fee, driving range usage and golf cart. We take tee times for Somersett residents four days in advance at 787-1800, ext 2.

Driving Range

Somersett residents have both complimentary and fee-based access to the Country Club’s Driving Range, which is available Tuesday thru Sunday. It is closed to all activity on Mondays. In-season (mid-April thru October): There is no charge for residents to hit off the matted surfaces. Most of the time this will be on the north side of the driving range. On rare occasions we will be on mats on the south

side and when this happens, you are welcome to utilize that side. Our service attendants will provide shuttle service, or you are permitted to walk to what is the back of the driving range. Golf balls will be staged there for you. Let our attendants know your approximate hitting time and they will check on you to shuttle you back. Off-season (November thru mid-April: The north side of the driving range is closed, and all play is from the mats on the south side. Turf tee: As a Somersett resident, you do have access to the turf tee by paying a $10/ person fee in the golf shop prior to your usage. The golf shop will give you a receipt which you MUST give to the range attendant. Access to the putting and chipping area is allowed only by paying the $10/person fee — no exceptions. Juniors MUST be accompanied by an adult. Men, please remember our simple dress code of no denim, no jogging suits, collared golf shirts and caps always worn forward. For the ladies, no denim, no jogging suits, no spaghetti strapped tops, bare midriffs, or short shorts. Proper footwear such as golf shoes or tennis shoes is required.

The Rajput Family

OF GG MARKET

12

|

Somersett Living

|

July/August 22

You can’t find a family that is happier to live in Somersett than Raaj and Pam Rajput along with their two sons, Dishu and Chase, who are the smiling faces you see when you stop by the local convenience store GG Market in the Town Center. “It was meant to be,” says Pam who smiles when talking about the day in 2016 when her husband Raaj was driving around different Reno neighborhoods searching for the perfect place to open their family’s convenience store. He drove by the Somersett Town Center, stopped by to look at an empty retail space, and bumped into Terry and Clay, his now landlords who told him they were looking for someone to open a convenience store. You can’t get more kismet than that! Six years later, GG Market (which stands for “God’s Grace’’) is a staple Somersett small business owned by one of its own residents. But the Rajput family hasn’t always lived in Somersett and only recently moved to the neighborhood in early 2021. Before that, they lived in South Reno and would commute to the store early in the morning to open by 8 am and leave late at night, often closing at 11 pm. Pam recounts many stories of just how kind Somersett residents were to them over the years. How in those early years, when winter storms got bad and it was dangerous to drive home, residents would stop by the store and offer their homes up for Raaj or Pam to sleep there overnight. Or the time a resident who lived near the store heard a loud noise and ran over to make sure they were safe and sound. Somersett continuously welcomed them to the neighborhood even before they were official residents of The Village. “There is just so much kindness in Somersett, it was just a matter of time before we made it our home too,” says Pam.

Get to Know the Rajput Family

Originally from India, Raaj and Pam moved to Reno with their eldest son Dishu, who is now 21 years old. Their youngest son Chase is 10 years old and loves to swim at the Town Center pool and make slime which he sells at the store for fun. Other important family members are Pam’s cat Saskei and their newest member, Dishu’s 1-year-old Siberian Husky named Bruce.

Where Can We Find You on Your Day Off?

“Sunday is Funday, which is our family day,” says Pam, and you can find them enjoying their family time at a trampoline park, roller skating, at the water slides, bowling, and enjoying many other fun activity centers in Reno.

Hobbies?

Pam used to be a beautician and loves to do nails and Raaj’s hobby is actually running the store, as he’s constantly looking out for new and unique goods to offer their customers.

Popular Store Items?

Residents pop in frequently to pick up alcohol for parties and kids love to visit “candy island,’’ the candy aisle at the store. They also have groceries and say they’d be happy to order things for residents if they don’t have them on hand. Next time you’re at the Town Center, please stop by GG Market to meet Raaj and Pam who have made Somersett their life’s work as well as their home.

Pay Attention

to Red Flag Warnings

What You SHOULD & SHOULDN’T DO When an Alert has Been Issued

The Garson Fire, which was determined to be humancaused, burned last July near Boomtown during a period of extremely high heat and strong winds.

mowers, especially near dry vegetation. • Don’t smoke outdoors and avoid throwing cigarettes or matches out of a moving vehicle. • Avoid driving or parking in dry grass or vegetation. • Avoid closed areas and be alert while visiting (open) public lands where wildfires might occur.

The National Weather Service issues a Red Flag Warning when warm temperatures, very low humidity, and stronger winds are expected. The combination of gusty winds and low humidity can cause fires to rapidly grow in size and intensity before first responders can contain them. During these times extreme caution is urged by all residents. This is the time to stay on high alert, watch the news, and prepare for evacuation if needed. If you see smoke or fire, call 911 ASAP. National Weather Service Reno: www.weather.gov/rev/

MORE TIPS from Washoe County:

WHAT TO DO during a Red Flag Warning

Emergency NOTIFICATIONS

• Safety chains on trailers should be properly secured. • Postpone target shooting. • Report any fire, smoke or unsafe activity which could lead to a fire.

From FireSafeMarin.org • Review your wildfire evacuation checklist (LivingWithFire. com has a good one) • Walk around the outside of your house and clear anything combustible, including: » Leaves from roofs, gutters, and around the base of walls » Wicker lawn furniture and all cushions » Wood piles or debris near structures and wood fences » Flammable doormats • Ensure your family and pets are prepared, and keep your evacuation go-kits nearby. • Ensure your car has a full tank of gas or is fully charged. • Ensure your cell phone is charged, and monitor phones for emergency alerts. • Stay hydrated — it’s usually warm and dry!

CODE RED: Washoe County has partnered with the Cities of Reno and Sparks to institute a telephone notification system for use in times of crisis. The system is known as “Code Red.” Sign up for Code Red: https://www.washoecounty.gov/em/ RegionalAlerts.php

Activities to AVOID

Somersett Owners Association has prepared a trio of Emergency Plans to guide residents and staff in the event of earthquakes, wildfires, and other emergencies. To view the plans, go to Somersett.org and select the Community Resources tab from the main menu, then click on the Emergency Preparedness tab.

According to the National Park Service, 80-90% of wildfires are human-caused. • Don’t use barbecues or fire-pits outdoors. • Don’t use any source of heat or open flame outdoors, including cooking, using power tools (gas or electric), or 18

Pickleball

Saturdays in the Sierras with Linda

Pickleball is a racquet sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping pong. Even if you’ve never played this beginner-friendly game before, come on out and join the fun! No equipment is needed — everything is provided. After your game, indoor play equipment must be stowed away neatly for the next player. Please move the nets on the tennis court to the fence to prevent damage. Reservations are necessary and are available through Zen Planner.

July 23 & Aug. 20 Meet at the Club at 8:30 am Location is to be determined

This summer, Saturday in the Sierras will be a kayaking and paddleboard adventure! Have fun on the water with your neighbors. Bring your own kayak or paddleboard, water, sunscreen, and snack. Both are carpooling events and are weather permitting (wind is the biggest issue) and may change to a hike. Register through Zen Planner. For more information, email Michael-Dean Williamson at md.williamson@mysomersett. com.
