Somersett Golf and Country Club PGA professionals are proud to donate their time to your little ones! This class is best suited for ages 3–7 and is held at the Driving Range. Saturdays May 4, 11, 18, 25, June 1, 15, 22, 29, 11 am–12:30 pm $15/clinic | RSVP 4 days prior to clinic | 3 min; 16 max Engage in the game of a lifetime and let our PGA professionals help you get ready to play. Building on the success of last year’s well-received Learn to Golf program, Stuart Smith and the staff will instruct this beginner/intermediate class. Whether you are a former golfer looking to dust off your clubs and brush up on your fundamentals or someone eager to learn, this is a great program.

A typical session includes clinic-style instruction as well as time for individual assistance. Over the course of each month, we will cover all aspects of the game, including full swing, putting, short game and on-course playing instruction. This program will run through the season with a projected end date of September 22. If participation dictates, we will add an additional 1 pm class on Saturdays during the height of the season. Please sign up four days prior to clinic time with the golf shop staff at 787-1800, ext. 2. We are excited for the 2019 golf season!

Play the Tom Kite Designed Championship Country Club Course All Somersett residents are welcome to play the Championship Country Club Course six times per year per the SOA/Country Club agreement (you may schedule a tee time four times and twice you may play as a guest of a member). Each resident may book up to a foursome of players at our accompanied guest rate of $70 per player.

This includes green fee, driving range usage and golf cart. We take tee times for Somersett residents three days in advance at 787-1800, ext. 2.

Driving Range Somersett residents are invited to utilize the driving range at the Country Club. The SOA/country club agreement allows for complimentary range usage from the cushioned mat on the north side of the range during the playing season. Please check in with the attendant at the driving range, provide identification as a resident and sign the usage sheet. Juniors MUST be accompanied by an adult. We will provide shuttle service every 20 minutes during operating hours May through October.

Access to the turf range, putting green and chipping green is available for $10 per person per day. Pay at the golf shop prior to usage. Juniors again must be accompanied by an adult.

Men, please remember our simple dress code of no denim or jogging suits, collared golf shirts and caps worn forward at all times.

For the ladies, we ask no denim, jogging suits, spaghetti strapped tops, bare midriffs or short shorts. Proper footwear such as golf shoes or tennis shoes is required.

Sand Shot

O

ne of the most daunting shots in the game is the sand shot. I hope that these tips along with a little practice will give you a new-found proficiency out of the sand.

1) The sand wedge is weighted and designed to lift the ball out of the bunker. The first thing to remember is that you do not have to help the ball up and out.

Remember, a soft splashing of the sand and weight on your lead foot at impact will get the majority of your shots out of the bunker.

2) My best advice when practicing out of the bunker is to draw a box around the ball — about the size of a normal divot, approximately 4 by 6 inches — then take your swing and splash the sand out of the box. The visual of splashing encourages a relaxed motion allowing the club to do most of the work. It is important to allow your wrists to hinge and unhinge.

Finally, practice, practice, practice. The more you practice with the box the more you will be able to imagine the box around your ball when you are playing.

3) It is also imperative that you finish facing the target with your weight on your left foot, rolled up on your right toe. A very common mistake is to finish on your back foot or flat-footed, which often happens when you try to lift the ball out with just your arms.

21,000 plastic bags and counting!

What started in February as a month of weekly mat-making sessions organized by Diane Williams at The Club at Town Center has spread to Aspen Lodge and beyond and shows no signs of slowing down.

Volunteers have made about 30 mats so far. Each mat takes over 40 hours to make and contains over 700 plastic grocery bags. That means volunteers have sorted, flattened, cut, looped into “plarn” and crocheted over 21,000 bags into mats, in a process that has taken over 1,200 work hours.

Tell us about the sleeping mat project: My husband, Willie, and I are members of Hot August Nights. One evening at the end of November we were having a bowling party at the National Bowling Stadium. Right behind our lane I saw a lady crocheting something. I stopped and asked her what she was doing. Once she explained that it was a sleeping mat for the homeless and out of recycled plastic bags, I was in! I am aware that we have a pretty large homeless population here in Reno and I am concerned.

I am also concerned about the plastic in our oceans and landfills, so this really hit a sweet spot for me.

I got permission from Callie Wylie (Club manager) to have people drop off bags at the concierge desk and she graciously gave us time in the Media Room to meet. I just started spreading the word and people were very responsive. It has now spread over to Aspen Lodge. I went to get my teeth cleaned and the hygienist at Sala Family Dentistry said she would set up a receptacle for bags and one of the gals in the office said she would train people how to process the bags so it has spread over there as well.

We’ve had two classes over at the Salvation Army for their men’s group and the church we attend is saving bags also. Seeing the enthusiasm of all the people involved is very motivating to me.

The Club at Town Center Reminders General Club Rules Members must check in to the facility upon entering and have their picture taken to program into the system. Members may be turned away if they cannot provide valid ID.

RSVP Policy Please remember to RSVP for programs by the deadline listed so we can ensure that enough supplies and staff are available. All event fees are due at time of reservation. Cancellations must be made 48 hours before an event to receive a refund. No refunds will be given for no-shows. Unless noted, all events are for residents only. If residents choose to bring a guest, event and guest fees apply.

Late Pick-Up Fee The Club will charge a late pick-up fee for any child not picked up within 15 minutes of a program’s end time, including Kids’ Corner. Following the 15-minute grace period, a $5 fee will be charged for every 10 minutes your child remains with us.

Guest Fees: $10 adult; $8 junior Members are allowed to bring up to four guests at one time for a maximum of 10 visits per guest. Members must accompany guests at all times.

Guest Passes Available for Purchase Purchase your discounted 10-punch guest passes for $65. Please note that all guest punch pass rules apply.

Free Guest Passes Each household is entitled to four free guest passes. You must pick them up at the Concierge desk at The Club at Town Center.

Alcohol Corkage Fee Policy Outside alcohol, beer and wine will only be permitted inside of The Club at Town Center (TCTC). No outside alcohol will be permitted on any outside space of the

TCTC, including the pool and golf course.

Residents may be permitted to bring outside alcohol (beer and wine only) subject to the following conditions: 1. It must be a TCTC sponsored social event that is on the calendar and scheduled accordingly. Private events cannot have outside alcohol.

2. There must be a staff bartender present. a. Alcohol must be checked in with the bartender at the time of arrival. b. The bartender must open and pour all beer and wine.

3. There will be a $1 corkage fee for each container of wine and beer (for wine, nothing larger than 750 milliliters per container and for beer, 1–6 cans, nothing larger than 32 ounces).

KIDS’ CORNER POLICY REMINDERS

• Kids’ Corner will only accept children 2 to 6 years of age. All children must be registered by a parent for Kids’ Corner prior to their first use of the room. Registration forms are available at the concierge desk or online at mysomersett.net.

• Parents with children who are not bathroom independent must remain on Club premises at all times when their child is in Kids’ Corner. This includes such activities as playing tennis, aerobics, using the fitness room, swimming or attending a special Club function.

• For the morning time slots, parents may sign their child up for either 8:30–10:30 am or 10:30 am–12:30 pm Monday through Friday and either 8–10 am or 10 am–12 pm on Saturday. Evening slot is from 5:30–7:30 pm, Monday through Thursday.

• The room operates on a six-to-one ratio, with a maximum of 12 children allowed at any given time. To accommodate this ratio, the Club requires reservations to be made at least 24 hours in advance to ensure staffing. Reservations may be made online at somersett.net seven days in advance.

• All children must be dropped off in Kids’ Corner within 15 minutes of their reservation time. If the parent has not checked in their child within the 15-minute window, the reservation becomes void and the spot will be opened to a child on the waiting list.

Look across the valley to our neighborly Mount Rose — the signs are unmistakable. The snow is starting to melt down the slopes, the hillsides are getting that faint hint of green, some early flowers can even be seen at the lower elevations. Yes, spring has finally sprung after a long and wet winter here in Northern Nevada, and while spring is an exciting time of growth and new beginnings, it also brings with it a nasty scourge — weeds! Your back yard isn’t the only place that suffers the woes and sorrows of these persistent and infuriating plants. As unsightly as they are, there are also some real dangers that invasive plants pose to our unique and beautiful surroundings. Invasive weeds can have long lasting impacts on the environment, causing erosion and increased risk of wildfires, not to mention using more than their fair share of water and resources to proliferate, pushing out native plants and forcing wildlife to change their habits.

How You Can Help...

Who Are We? Since 1984, Friends of Nevada Wilderness has been dedicated to the protection and preservation of the great extent of public lands that we enjoy here in Nevada. While the organization has its roots in public lands advocacy, we have also developed a robust and well-established conservation stewardship program committed to onthe-ground restoration efforts. Throughout the summer we host overnight projects in some of the most rugged and beautiful places in the state, working to protect our public lands in Nevada. Each spring, we bring volunteers from the community into the Mount Rose Wilderness to combat the invasive musk thistle plant — a spiny, fastgrowing invasive weed that can negatively affect the delicate montane ecosystem.

Hello Somersett!

Y

ou may have noticed that there is a different company managing the common area landscape as of March 1. We are BrightView Landscape Services and we are THRILLED to be here. BrightView is the largest landscape service provider in the nation, and we bring a depth of experience and resources unmatched in the industry. Our mission is to have the residents view the streetscapes and common areas as an integral amenity of this world-class community.

You may notice our crews performing some spring activities. We will detail these below, with an explanation of the results we are striving for. Of course, these tips can be also be applied to your residences to help keep your landscape healthy and your property looking great. Please remember to use all necessary personal protective equipment (gloves, safety glasses, sunscreen, hats, and leather boots) while performing landscape activities at home. Our crews use theirs every day to help prevent accidents and we hope you will too.

• Tree Wells: Tree wells are being created around the trees in the turf areas. This helps keep string trimmers and mowers away from the bark at the base of the tree. If this bark is damaged excessively, the tree health will deteriorate. The wells can be kept clean using herbicides, or composted mulch can be added to the well to suppress weed growth. If you add mulch, do not pile the mulch against the trunk, as this can lead to health issues as well.

• Irrigation Start-Up: After the reasonable threat of freezing is over, the irrigation can be started back up. Irrigation mainlines will be filled with water once again, and the entire system will be evaluated for breaks. The controllers will be set depending on the weather. As the weather warms, the run times will be increased. However, if the threat of frost returns, be sure to turn your sprinklers off temporarily. You don’t want them to run and create ice on the sidewalks.

• Turf Aeration: Core aerators were used on the turf areas. These machines have tines that will pull small plugs of turf, leaving a series of small holes. These holes loosen the soil and help get water, air, and nutrients into the root zone resulting in a healthier turf. It is not necessary to rake up the cores. They can be recycled back into the lawn using a mulching mower. Remember to water the day before aerating to help the tines penetrate deeper. Also, avoid sprinkler heads. Aerators can be rented at most rental yards.

• Fertilization: After the sprinklers are back on and the turf is aerated, and application of granular fertilizer will be applied to help the turf “wake-up.” We will apply at a rate of one pound of actual nitrogen per 1000/square feet. Using a slow release fertilizer is also a good idea. This allows the nitrogen to be released over an extended period and this will keep your turf looking great. Your local garden center will be able to recommend the best product for your yard.

Pre-emergent and Post-emergent Herbicides: The turf areas will be •

receiving a treatment of pre-emergent herbicide that creates a barrier that helps keep weeds from germinating in the turf areas. A treatment of postemergent herbicide will be applied to control weeds that have already germinated. Consistent treatments according to the product’s label instructions will eventually lead to a weed-free turf. Your local garden center will be able to recommend the best product for your yard. (Note: a well-tuned irrigation system is critical to maintain a weed free turf. If you have areas where the water doesn’t reach very well, you will have weak/ dry spots. These weak areas are where most weed infestations start.)

• Spring Planting: Spring is the best time to install new trees and shrubs. This allows the roots to establish before the hot, dry summer.

However, before you plant you should consider a few things:

—The sun exposure - some plants like full sun, some like part shade, and others do best in full shade.

—The mature size of the plant planting a large shrub in a tight area will require more trimming.

—Does the plant have thorns? If so, avoid planting these near pedestrian paths.

What to plant is a matter of personal preference. A good idea is to find plants in the community you like and see if they are thriving in the situations that exist in your yard. If you don’t know what the plant is, you can ask your neighbor what it is or take a picture of it and have your local nursery identify it.

Zumba w/ Leslie B. 6:35 – 7:35 PM FITNESS CLASS DESCRIPTIONS AquaFit: This popular water aerobics workout is a fun, low-impact workout that blends cardio and resistance training with buoyant water weights and noodles in the pool.

Body Sculpt: Define, sculpt and build lean muscle for all levels of fitness. Classes focus on intense isolation exercises with free weights and resistance, ending with abs.

Boot Camp: Each boot camp class will push you out of your comfort zone with different exercises to keep you on your toes and work up a sweat through total body, high intensity interval and circuit training.

Butts & Guts: Shape and tone your lower body and core. Workouts will focus on strengthening and tightening abs, glutes, legs, and lower back using a variety of different exercises with light weights and body resistance.

Cardio Step: A high energy, heart-pumping cardio class that mixes basic to intermediate choreography in a variety of fun styles.

Different levels of intensity ensure everyone gets the most out of their workout. This is an excellent cross-training class for all fitness levels.

Chair Yoga: A gentle form of Hatha Yoga done while seated or standing next to a chair for support. This class helps with muscle toning, flexibility, mobility, balance, strength, circulation and breathing. Beginner-friendly, all levels welcome.

Circuit Training: This class is a high-volume, low-resistance workout with short rest intervals. Improve muscle tone and definition, while improving cardiovascular fitness.

Should a homeowner not respond to or correct a violation, he or she will be summoned to a hearing and could be suspended from the Club and assessed fines. At this time the Association has a policy not to enter a property unless it is bank owned, and then only to repair front-yard landscaping.

Quality landscaping is important to the appearance of each individual home and the overall continuity of the Somersett community. Well designed and maintained landscaping may preserve and enhance your home’s property value. Homeowners are responsible for all aspects of their landscaping, including the street parkway strip.

2019 Summer Pool Hours SWIM PROGRAMS

GROUP LESSONS 2-week sessions: Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays starting June 17 $50/session for members; $60/session for Goddard students Session 1: June 17–28 Session 2: July 8–19 Session 3: July 22–August 2 Group lessons are available to resident members of the Club at Town Center and students of the Goddard School. Beginner, advanced beginner and intermediates levels will be offered. Swimmers must be at least 3 years old to participate in group lessons. Lessons are 30 minutes long.

LAP SWIM ETIQUETTE Please be courteous to other lap swimmers when there is only one lane in use. Circle swimming is a good rule of thumb when there are multiple swimmers in one lane. Please stay to the right of the blue lane guide when this is appropriate.

Parent-Toddler Lessons Saturdays starting June 8 $10/class for residents; $15/class for Goddard students Parent-toddler lessons are available to members of The Club at Town Center and Goddard School students. Children participating in the program must be between six months and three years old with little to no experience in the water. Classes focus on fundamental water exercises that encourage and promote swimming skills and comfortability in the pool. All lessons are 30 minutes long.

Introducing the New Slide Catch Pool!

Those enjoying the large slide this summer will splash down into a brand-new pool. The Slide Catch Pool was constructed over the winter to create a separate area for the slide to feed into, thus freeing up the entire Lower Pool for family fun. The slide itself is not new — the original slide was rotated to align with the new pool, then given a fresh coat of paint. So, go ahead and give our new pool a test slide!

Let’s Have a Glass-Free Summer One of the most important pool rules to remember is that glass bottles and glass containers of any kind are not permitted on the pool deck, for very good reason.

If that glass should happen to break, barefooted pool-goers and those broken shards are a dangerous combination.

If pieces of broken glass should fall into the pool itself, it’s a HUGE problem: • First, when glass falls into water it often becomes very hard to spot. If a swimmer accidentally ingests a sliver, brushes against glass debris or steps on it, a severe injury could occur.

• If broken glass is pulled into the pool’s filtration system, it could cause severe damage.

• Finally, if glass shards should fall into the pool, for safety’s sake we would have shut the pool down, drain the water and carefully vacuum the bottom and sides, then re-fill it with water and balance the chemicals. During this process, the pool would be closed for up to a week. On top of that, there is the extra expense involved in the cleanup, including $1,000 cost to refill the pool with water.

So, let’s have a wonderful summer enjoying our newly renovated pool area — and please leave those glass containers at home!

More Shade We have purchased a variety of new canopies as well as double the number umbrellas as in past years, with the goal of providing more shaded areas to enjoy around the pools.

AQUATIC RULES: POOL RULES 1. Hours of operation are set by management. Swimmers are asked to use caution at all times when utilizing the pool area. Any incident should be reported to a lifeguard immediately.

2. The Lap Pool has designated times for lap swim only and free swim determined by management.

3. Children using flotation devices must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Children under the age of six must be closely supervised by an accompanying adult.

4. Children who are not bathroom dependent must wear a designated swim diaper. The club reserves the right to ask a child be removed from the water if not wearing a swim diaper.

5. Proper bathing suits are required for swimming. No cut-off shorts or thong bikinis allowed.

6. Please shower before entering the pool.

7. No diving in any area of the pool.

8. No running and jumping off the side of the pool. Members should not throw other members or children into the pool from the pool deck.

9. No glass containers of any kind permitted on the pool deck.

10. No food or drink allowed in the pool.

11. Temporary shade structures are limited to outdoor personal umbrellas. No tents, canopy or other similar personal shade structures will be permitted on the pool deck.

12. Persons with skin disorders may be denied use of the pool.

13. No pets allowed within the pool deck area. Exceptions will only be made for service animals.

14. No rafts or inflatables are permitted without approval from management.

15. No running, horseplay or water guns are permitted within the pool deck area.

16. No balls will be permitted in the pools.

17. Non-aquatic toys are not permitted in the pool. Diving rings and other pool specific toys are permitted.

18. Kickboards are for use as swimming aids and/or swimming instruction; no standing, sitting or horse play allowed.

19. The pool furniture is not to be removed from its location on the pool deck.

20. Members are not permitted to bring in outside coolers larger than 12” x 12” x 12” without prior management approval. No outside alcohol is permitted. Staff reserves the right to inspect coolers and take possession of any alcohol being brought into the facility.

21. Refrain from talking to lifeguards while they are on the stands.

22. Lifeguards’ instructions must be obeyed at all times by members and guests for maximum safety. Failure to follow rules will result in being required to leave.

23. Management may reserve portions of the pool deck for member or club-sponsored parties or events.

24. No outside decorations will be permitted. This includes, but is not limited to, streamers, balloons or confetti.

SLIDE RULES 1. Swimmers must stay clear of the catch pool and slide exit area. Do not reach into the slide from the deck area.

2. Riders must exit the catch pool immediately by use of stairs.

No diving from the slide into the catch pool.

3. Children less than 48 inches tall who are unable to swim may only use the slide with a parent.

3. Parents may assist their child out of the water in the catch

pool if necessary, but they cannot stand in front of the slide to catch their child. Parents may wait at the steps if needed.

4. Only one person at a time is allowed to go down the slide, excluding a parent and small child as described above.

5. Please walk up the steps and make sure the catch pool is empty before going down the slide.

6. Riders must go down on their back, feet first.

7. No flotation devices of any kind are permitted on the slide, including those in bathing suits.

8. No goggles, sunglasses, hats or any object that may fall off into the water is permitted on the slide.

9. Lifeguard instructions must be obeyed at all times by members and guests for maximum safety.

SPA RULES 1. For the safety of users, the lower spa capacity is 15 swimmers at a time.

2. Children 12 years of age or younger should not use the spa for more than 10 consecutive minutes and must be supervised by an adult.

3. Extended exposure to hot water or vapors may be detrimental to the health of elderly persons and persons with heart conditions, diabetes or high or low blood pressure.

4. People with skin, ear, genital or other body infections, open sores or wounds should not use the hot tub due to the possibility of spreading infection.

5. Do not ingest water by mouth as this can cause infection and illness. Parents are to warn children not to allow water in their mouths.

6. The heat of the hot tub water speeds up the effects of alcohol and can cause sleepiness, dizziness and unconsciousness.

7. Horseplay, splashing, swimming and diving are not permitted in the spas.

8. The lower spa will close daily from 2–2:15 pm for backwashing and refilling. Management reserves the right to close the spa for additional closures as need.

AQUATIC WEATHER POLICY For the safety of members, the club follows American Red Cross guidelines for thunder and lightning. From the time staff hears thunder or sees lightning, the pool will be cleared for 30 minutes. In the case of lightning, the pool deck must be cleared due to the danger of lightning strikes.

In the case of consistent inclement weather, the manager will make the decision to close the pool for 2-hour increments to accommodate the ever-changing weather patterns. If the weather improves, then the pool will reopen. Pool closing and/or opening times will be placed on the Golf Hut window, concierge desk and Facebook.

Rain passes will be issued in the case of inclement weather if the guest signed in less than one hour prior to closing time. The check-in attendant on duty will issue the rain pass to applicable guests. No cash refunds will be given.

Ice: Management reserves the right to close the pools at any time due to cold temperatures causing ice on the pool deck.

Air quality: Management reserves the right to close the pools at any time due to poor air quality. If the air quality index reaches 170 or higher, the pools will be closed due to the health and safety of residents and staff.
