ALL SOMERSETT RESIDENTS’ EVENTS & SPECIALS
Neighborhood of Lights
Community Lights Contest Open to all Somersett residents Sign up by December 2 Contest runs December 7 through 19 Winners announced on Sunday, December 20, during the Neighborhood of Lights Holiday Party
Finally, 2020 brings us something to look forward to – the Fourth Annual Neighborhood of Lights! This mapped tour of homes decked out in holiday displays is becoming a favorite tradition here in Somersett. Children and adults alike appreciate seeing their community sparkle with the spirit of their neighbors’ decorating efforts as they vote for their favorite displays. This year we are planning something new – a special Santa Caravan in the early evening of Sunday, December 13, featuring Mr. Claus himself! Golf carts decked out in holiday lights and decorations will escort the Jolly Old Elf as the group winds its way through the streets of Somersett waving and spreading holiday cheer to all who come out to greet them. A vehicle collecting donations for a local food bank will bring up the rear. When it gets closer to the date, we will provide a route and estimated times for the caravan. We hope you will consider entering your home to be entered into our contest and featured on our map of decorated homes. Categories are: • Classic: Traditional decorations • Griswold: Over-the-top fun • Young People’s Choice: Displays which appeal to those under age 17 • Just Decorating: You have holiday decorations that your neighbors might enjoy, but you don’t want your display to be voted on. All addresses in this category will be entered into a raffle for a prize. • Best Street: Get together with a few of your neighbors and enter your street in this coveted category. To enter, email Robin Bolson at robin.bolson@fsresidential.com or call her at 787-4500, ext. 324. The deadline to enter is December 2. TOUR THE DISPLAYS AND VOTE: From December 7–19, enjoy the displays with your family and friends and vote for your favorites. CELEBRATE: Then on Sunday, December 20, join other residents in a socially-distanced holiday party in the Sports Court at the Club at Town Center to celebrate the winners – and the season – with your neighbors. MORE INFO: We will post details about the Neighborhood of Lights map, the Santa Caravan and the Holiday Party on Somersett. net and in the weekly Somersett Happenings enewsletter (to subscribe, email Robin.Bolson@fsresidential.com). PLEASE NOTE: SOA Rules & Regulations state that December decorations may be put up starting on Thanksgiving (November 26). Many thanks to our community partners for this event, The Kirby Team, Stephanie Hanna of Synergy Home Mortgage and the Brett Charbonneau – American Family Insurance Agent!
SOMERSETT WILL ONCE AGAIN help make the holidays a little brighter for area seniors in need. The Club at Town Center’s Christmas tree will be adorned with special “bulbs,’’ part of Home Instead Senior Care’s Be a Santa to a Senior program. Each bulb will list the name of an area senior, along with a suggested gift item. If you want to participate, stop by the Club and select a bulb, purchase the item(s) listed, and drop the unwrapped gift(s) and the bulb in the collection bin next to the tree. Home Instead Senior Care and community volunteers will wrap and deliver the gifts. Watch for more information on Somersett.net and in Somersett Happenings weekly enewsletters (sign up by emailing robin.bolson@ fsresidential.com).

SOMERSETT GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB GOLF TIP: Putting
By Stuart Smith—PGA Director of Golf
AS WE HEAD INTO WINTER and temperatures prevent many of us from heading out to the golf course, it is a great time to work on some easy putting fundamentals in the comfort of our homes. I recommend a few simple putting fundamentals: 1) Place the ball slightly left of center (right-handers), with hands centered slightly forward of the body. The putter shaft should be perpendicular to the ground. 2) Eyes over the ball: You might have to adjust the height of your hands on the putter to accomplish this. 3) The motion of the putter includes shoulders, arms, hands, putter grip and putter head, all working at the same tempo. Research shows the best putters adhere to a 2:1 tempo on all length putts. 4) I have found success in stabilizing my lower body by putting a little outward pressure on my knees. The lower body should remain stable with no side-to-side movement. 5) Allow the putter to swing on its natural arc. The putter is NOT designed to swing on a straight line, but rather on an arc. In contrast, a croquet mallet is designed to swing straight back and straight through.
November/December Hours PLEASE NOTE: These hours are subject to change
BOCCE BALL COURT HOURS November Tuesday through Sunday: 8 am–5 pm* December Tuesday through Sunday: 10 am–4 pm* *May play until dusk if in possession of own bocce balls For those interested in playing bocce, please note there is a grooming rake/brush located in the cart barn of the clubhouse. Bocce balls and scoreboards may be checked out from the golf shop staff during operating hours.
Play the Tom Kite-designed Championship Country Club Course All Somersett residents are welcome to play the Championship Country Club Course four times per year. Each resident may book a foursome of players at a rate of $80 per player (in season) and $50 per player (off-season, November-March). This includes green fee, driving range usage and golf cart. We take tee times for residents four days in advance at 787-1800, ext. 2. Men, please remember our dress code of no denim, collared golf shirts and caps worn forward at all times. For the ladies, no denim, no spaghetti-strap tops, bare midriffs or short shorts. Proper footwear, such as golf or tennis shoes, is required.
6
COUNTRY CLUB GOLF SHOP HOURS November Tuesday through Sunday: 8 am–5 pm December Tuesday through Sunday: 10 am–4 pm COMMUNITY DRIVING RANGE HOURS November Tuesday through Sunday: 8:30 am–5 pm December Tuesday through Sunday: 10 am–4 pm COUNTRY CLUB FIRST TEE TIMES November Tuesday through Sunday: 9 am. Closed Monday December Tuesday through Sunday: 11 am. Closed Monday *All times are weather dependent. Call the golf shop 787-1800, ext. 2.
Driving Range Somersett Residents are encouraged to utilize the driving range at the Country Club. With the SOA/Country Club agreement range usage is complimentary. November through April residents may use the south side where we are always on mats. The cost to utilize the putting green and chipping area in the winter is $10 – please check in with the golf shop. Juniors must be accompanied by an adult.
Winter/Snow Season We kindly ask that you refrain from winter activities on both of our golf courses during the winter season. We do not allow tubing, tobogganing, sledding, saucering, skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, etc. on either golf course. Damage caused by this activity becomes apparent in the spring and playing conditions are greatly sacrificed. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
PGA and LPGA tour players have tempos of 62–72 beats per minute regardless of the length of putt they face, which equates to approximately .90 seconds of elapsed time. The “holy grail” of putting tempo is 2:1, as evidenced by most of the great players. This would equal .60 seconds on the backstroke and .30 seconds on the through stroke and highlights the acceleration through the ball. All of the greats do that. Short putt = short back and slower through – .90 seconds at 2:1 tempo Long putt = longer back and faster through – .90 seconds at 2:1 tempo There are many apps and devices, but if you are serious about improving, I recommend the Blast sensor for golf. It accurately measures 11 separate metrics – most importantly tempo. Need help with your putting this winter? Set up a lesson in our Short Game Arena here at the Country Club. Putting is one of the easiest things to improve upon with a little instruction. Our staff can be reached at 787-1800, ext. 2, or email me at ssmith@somersett.com to set an appointment.
Holiday gift ideas for golfers on your list Are you looking for that special gift for the golfer this holiday season? Check out the golf shop in the clubhouse for all of your apparel and equipment needs. We have accounts with all major companies and can special order items that are not in stock.

It’s Time to Evaluate Your Medicare Options By Rob Tolle, Prominence Health Plan MEDICARE OPEN ENROLLMENT RUNS from Oct. 15 through Dec. 7 and is the only annual time a Medicare beneficiary can make changes to their healthcare coverage. Medicare is the primary insurer for Americans over 65 years old, but some don’t know there are other options outside of Original Medicare that often come with extra benefits for no extra cost. Medicare Advantage plans are an underutilized way to save money on healthcare costs. The Part C “all in one” alternative, combines Part A and Part B, and usually includes Part D prescription coverage. These plans keep all of the medical coverage offered under Original Medicare, have an out-of-pocket maximum and often include additional benefits like dental, vision, hearing, and transportation to doctor’s offices. Finding the best coverage to meet your specific needs can significantly affect the quality and cost of your healthcare journey. 8
You can review and compare all plans available in your county by going to Medicare.gov. Be sure to review core benefits and dive into the details of the additional perks and programs: • Does this plan have a monthly premium? • What is the annual out-of-pocket maximum? • Are dental, vision and hearing included at no extra cost? • Does this plan include a fitness benefit, transportation, over-thecounter allowances or mail-order pharmacy options? Understanding your options can be complicated, which is why we advise talking with a licensed insurance broker who can provide unbiased information to help you find a plan that fits your needs. Rob Tolle leads a team of licensed brokers located in Reno who can compare available plan options throughout Washoe, Carson City, Douglas, Storey, Lyon, and Churchill counties. To evaluate your current plan or learn more about your options, call 800-880-7457, Monday-through Friday from 8 AM–8 PM.
CANYON NINE No tee times required. Play is first-come, first-served. The Canyon Nine Golf Course – an executive par 3 walking course – is the perfect choice for learning the game or a quick nine after work. No tee times required – play is first come, first served. Emergency Care Services
Expanded in Northwest Reno TO MEET THE NEEDS OF OUR GROWING COMMUNITY, Northern Nevada Medical Center has opened a freestanding emergency department (FED), ER at McCarran NW. Located at 10290 N. McCarran Blvd., it is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Additionally, there are onsite laboratory services and diagnostic imaging including CT, X-ray and ultrasound. “Our new facility expands access to care and provides a convenient option when seeking emergency services,” says Helen Lidholm, CEO of Northern Nevada Medical Center. “The FED will treat the same type of emergencies as a hospital emergency department, and we anticipate short wait times.”
What to Expect from the ER at McCarran NW This FED provides treatment for serious, sometimes life-threatening emergency medical conditions including abdominal pain, chest pain, respiratory distress, broken bones or dislocated joints, serious infections, injuries, stroke symptoms, and more. Patients of all ages, from infants to seniors, are welcome for treatment. There is a pediatric treatment room to help little ones feel at ease. Critically ill patients can be treated and stabilized, and if hospital admission is warranted, the patient will be transferred to the hospital.
COVID-19 Protections in Place The same protocols as our hospital in Sparks are in place at the FED. This includes thorough cleaning in between each patient, mandatory face coverings, screening will occur prior to entering the building, and social distancing will be required in all sitting areas and hallways.
To learn more and to view ER wait times, visit nnmc.com/mccarran.

A Guide to Snow Removal along Somersett Streets and Sidewalks Private Streets Snow removal and street sweeping within the sub-associations of the Village and the Vue are the responsibility of the sub-associations. Other private streets within the Association (streets that are behind a gate) will be plowed when there is an accumulation of three inches on the street. Streets will be swept within a reasonable time frame following the last snowfall to clear the streets of sand and debris. Community gates are left open during and after storms to allow equipment to move through the community quickly and efficiently and to avoid accidents involving equipment – or homeowner vehicles – sliding through the gates.
City-owned Streets In Somersett, any street that is not behind a gate is a public street, which means that plowing is the responsibility of the city. If you have questions, contact the city at 334-2099.
Sidewalks Homeowners are responsible for maintaining and shoveling the sidewalks adjacent to their property. The Association will plow the common area sidewalks and asphalt trails along the three major parkways (Somersett, Del Webb and Somersett Ridge) if there is still snow on the sidewalks and trails within 48 hours after the end of snowfall.
Report Potholes If you spot a pothole on a city-maintained street, call Reno Direct at 334-4636, or submit a request online at https://goo.gl/DvimMh To report a pothole on an SOA-maintained street behind a gate, call the SOA office at 787-4500, or email soa@mysomersett.com.
