ATHLETIC 2017-18

GUIDE

Our Mission Justin-Siena is a Catholic high school in the Lasallian tradition called to provide educational excellence in a loving, Christ-centered community that prepares students to serve and to lead in an ever-changing world.

Braves Athletics More than 80% of Justin-Siena students participate in our Athletic Program. Student-athletes compete in the Marin County Athletic League (MCAL). All athletic teams are supported by our Athletic Trainer, helping to ensure the health and safety of our student athletes. Athletics are seen as an extension of the classroom and teach about character and commitment as well as successful competition.

WELCOME In every endeavor, we aim to cultivate growth of the mind, body, and spirit. Like our Founder, St. John Baptist de La Salle, we guide our students to become all God made them to be, and a strong partnership with parents is essential in achieving this goal.

Five Core Principles for Athletics 1. The success of the team and the quality of the student experience will be our highest priorities. 2. Sports are demanding. A Braves student-athlete will be expected to give their best effort on behalf of the team in the pursuit of excellence. This includes prioritized and enthusiastic attendance at training, team meetings, practice, and competitions. 3. We will have honest and clear communication with the studentathletes as we support and fully expect their best effort in the context of the success of the team.

4. We commit to creating team environments that foster learning, personal growth, the positive spirit of competition and the value of the group. 5. Each team will communicate on a regular basis with parents as to team functions such as practice and game schedules, travel and departure times. In the spirit of partnership and the well-being of each student-athlete if there is a parental concern please communicate directly with the head coach as a first step. As needed the athletic director is also always available for parental concerns.

Student Athlete Health & Safety Justin-Siena’s Athletic Trainer is a qualified allied health care professional educated and experienced in the management of health care issues associated with sports participation. The Athletic Trainer functions in cooperation with medical personnel, athletic administrators, coaches, and parents in the development and coordination of efficient and responsive athletic health care delivery systems.

“What do I love most about working at Justin-Siena? I love getting to work with the student-athletes on and off the field. Helping those that are injured return to their sport and teaching students the ins and outs of sports medicine and athletic training.” Sarah Goble, MA, ATC Athletic Trainer

Sarah Goble, MA, ATC Athletic Trainer; Instructor of Sports Medicine sgoble@justin-siena.org 707.255.0950 ext. 624 Follow on Twitter: @JSSportsMed

In cooperation with physicians and other allied health care personnel, the Athletic Trainer functions as an integral member of the athletic health care team in secondary schools, colleges and universities, professional sports programs, sports medicine clinics, and other athletic health care settings. INJURY ASSESSMENT All athletic related injuries should be assessed initially by the school Athletic Trainer to determine the best course of action to manage the injury. REHABILITATION Some injuries can be rehabilitated with the Athletic Trainer during after school hours in the Athletic Training Room. All rehabilitation times are coordinated with the student-athlete and the Athletic Trainer. PHYSICALS All student-athletes need to have a valid physical. Physicals are valid for one (1) year. All medical paperwork is reviewed by the Athletic Trainer. No student is allowed to try out or participate in any sport without a valid physical. All physicals for all student-athletes are stored on SportsWare. This is an online resource to manage, and store students’ physicals. It is 100% HIPAA compliant.

SPORTSWARE SportsWare is an online resource to manage, and store studentathlete’s physicals, medical history, and emergency information. Each studentathlete is required to have a completed SportsWare account. To access your SportsWare account, students login with their school email. IMPACT TESTING The ImPACT test is a baseline concussion assessment that is required every two (2) years for every student-athlete. Please check with the Athletic Trainer if you are unsure of when your last ImPACT baseline test was taken. All ImPACT assessments are reviewed by neuropsychologist consultant Dr. Eric Freitag.

Transportation Justin-Siena serves students from three counties and has a fleet of eight busses to facilitate student transportation. In addition to daily routes, an Activity Bus is available at a later time to accomodate students participating in after-school activities such as athletic practices, performing arts, etc. • When the school provides bus transportation to and from a school-sponsored activity, students are required to travel to and from the activity on the school-provided bus unless otherwise stated. • Students may not travel to and from out-of-town activities with other student drivers. • Under special circumstances, parent drivers, who have completed the Parent Driver Form and meet qualifications for private vehicles may transport students who are not their children from a school activity if the coach and Director of Transportation have written/electronic permission from the student’s parents on the day of travel. The school must also have on file information verifying insurance coverage and driver’s license. The full Transportation Safety Plan may be found on the school website (under Student Life > Transportation) at www.justin-siena.org.
