GUIDE

Sempre Avanti–Always Forward

Our Mission Justin-Siena is a Catholic high school in the Lasallian tradition called to provide educational excellence in a loving, Christ-centered community that prepares students to serve and to lead in an ever-changing world.

ABOUT OUR SCHOOL SEAL In addition to identifying our location and the year of our 1966 founding, our seal contains the history of our school. The Justin-Siena seal embodies the icons of the Dominican Sisters of San Rafael (who co-sponsored the school through the 2005-06 academic year) and the De La Salle Christian Brothers. The original Dominican black and white cross, fleury, indicates a spiritual ideal in spreading the Gospel of Christ by preaching and teaching. The five-pointed star signifies the sign of faith, which guides all Christian Brothers and Lasallian partners in their vocation of Christian education. Finally, “Sempre Avanti” heralds the legacy of the Brothers, and more specifically, Justin High School. Italian for “always forward” these words appeared on the Justin High School seal representing a commitment of the Christian Brothers to looking forward and never being complacent, while exhibiting a passion for preparing the students entrusted to their care.

WELCOME In every endeavor, we aim to cultivate growth of the mind, body, and spirit. Like our Founder, St. John Baptist de La Salle, we guide our students to become all God made them to be, and a strong partnership with parents is essential in achieving this goal.

Advisory Program Our Advisory Program is a cornerstone of our vision for an increasingly personalized, experiential, and whole student experience. Last fall, the Class of 2020 ushered in advisory, and we are now excited to expand the program. This coming year will be the first year the entire Justin-Siena student body actively participates in our advisory program.

The purpose of advisory is two-fold: to ensure that all students are seen, known and loved, and to help positively shape student culture through a relationship-focused, student-centered program.

This initiative has been an opportunity to live ideals of our heritage and our mission. Advisory is a dedicated time for a small cohort of students and an adult advisor to foster whole-person growth through authentic relationships. Students are paired with an advisor, and advisors serve as mentors and coaches, becoming elder brothers and sisters to our students just as St. John Baptist de La Salle envisioned. Through the cultivation of relationships, exploration of social-emotional learning, as well as acquiring practical metacognitive and academic skills, we can provide space for students to become their best selves. Advisory will also serve as a vehicle for shaping the broader community through the development of a house system. Similar to what many students may know from the Harry Potter books, we will link advisories vertically and develop twelve “houses,” each containing an advisory from each class. Linking groups of students from all four grades will allow for intentional student mentorship and team-building, promulgate positive school culture through healthy competition between houses, incentivize attendance and school spirit at student events of all kinds, and create a greater sense of community.

Ways to Give A Justin-Siena education provides unique opportunities for young men and women to develop lifelong habits of learning that provide a strong foundation on which to build their lives. An unrestricted gift to Justin-Siena helps support the annual activities of the school and enables the school to direct funds to where they are most needed. Types of gifts accepted at Justin-Siena include:

Cash Gifts

Alumni Generations Fund

Cash gifts include donations of cash, check or credit card. Gifts may be made online, through the Justin-Siena website and Parent Pledge gifts can be made through monthly direct debits by contacting Tiffany Wing.

Every year, children of Justin-Siena alumni join the freshman class, which strengthens the community and builds lasting legacies. To ensure that alumni families will always be a part of the school’s great legacy, and regardless of their ability to afford tuition, annual gifts to the Alumni Generations Fund will provide support for tuition assistance for alumni children.

Gifts of Securities Gifts of stock offer two-fold savings. Donors pay no capital gains on the increased value of the appreciated stock and receive an income tax deduction for the full market value at the time of the gift. Transferring securities is easy; however, to ensure proper tax credit, timely acknowledgment, and accurate processing of your stock donation, please contact the Advancement Office for a transfer form and additional information.

Gifts of Real Estate Real property, either in its entirety or in part, can be deeded to Justin-Siena. It is even possible to arrange a sizable tax deduction by deeding a home or farm to the school now, while continuing to occupy the property for life. All real estate transactions are subject to inspection and final approval by the President and the Board of Trustees of Justin-Siena.

Matching Gifts Many employers participate in a matching gift program. This is a tremendous benefit that can double or even triple your gift to Justin-Siena. Check with your human resources department for matching gift forms.

12.

Memorial and Honorary Tribute Gifts These types of gifts provide a tribute in memory of a loved one’s passing or in honor of a person during his/her lifetime.

Legacy Circle Gifts Members of this society have thoughtfully included Justin-Siena in their estate plans or wills. These gifts of forethought and generosity take many forms: bequests, living trusts, annuities or other life income plans, which name Justin-Siena High School as a beneficiary of their estate plans or wills. If you would like more information about making a planned gift, contact the Director of Advancement at 707.255.0950 ext. 628.

A Catholic High School in the Lasallian Tradition

We Believe. We Love. We Will.

BROTHER JUSTIN McMAHON, FSC Pioneer in Catholic Education & First Visitor of the District of San Francisco Namesake of Justin-Siena

History

Justin-Siena High School was founded fifty -one years ago when a need for a Catholic college preparatory education arose in the Napa Valley. In 1966, Justin High School for boys (sponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers) and Siena High School for girls (sponsored by the Dominican Sisters of San Rafael) were founded. In 1972, the schools merged and became co-educational under the name of JustinSiena High School. The De La Salle Christian Brothers became the sole sponsor of Justin-Siena in June 2006. With such a rich heritage, Justin-Siena bears a distinction of educational excellence that ensures the school is always moving forward as our motto suggests—Sempre Avanti. We take pride in our current students and graduates who continue to serve and lead in their communities.

ST. CATHERINE of SIENA 14th Century Dominican Saint Doctor of the Church Namesake of Justin-Siena

De La Salle Christian Brothers

The Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools (also known as the De La Salle Christian Brothers) is a Roman Catholic teaching order founded in France in 1680 by John Baptist de La Salle, a Catholic priest. Originally serving the purpose of educating the young, with a particular concern to those of modest or limited means, the De La Salle Christian Brothers currently sponsor approximately 1,000 institutions in more than 80 countries around the world. Their Founder, St. John Baptist de La Salle, is regarded today as the patron saint of all teachers. It is from this rich legacy lasting more than 330 years that we celebrate our Lasallian traditions everyday, throughout our campus, and in all that we do.
