GUIDE

Sempre Avanti–Always Forward

Our Mission Justin-Siena is a Catholic high school in the Lasallian tradition called to provide educational excellence in a loving, Christ-centered community that prepares students to serve and to lead in an ever-changing world. ABOUT OUR SCHOOL SEAL In addition to identifying our location and the year of our 1966 founding, our seal contains the history of our school. The Justin-Siena seal embodies the icons of the Dominican Sisters of San Rafael (who co-sponsored the school through the 2005-06 academic year) and the De La Salle Christian Brothers. The original Dominican black and white cross, fleury, indicates a spiritual ideal in spreading the Gospel of Christ by preaching and teaching. The five-pointed star signifies the sign of faith, which guides all Christian Brothers and Lasallian partners in their vocation of Christian education. Finally, “Sempre Avanti” heralds the legacy of the Brothers, and more specifically, Justin High School. Italian for “always forward” these words appeared on the Justin High School seal representing a commitment of the Christian Brothers to looking forward and never being complacent, while exhibiting a passion for preparing the students entrusted to their care.

History

Justin-Siena High School was founded in 1966 as Justin High School for boys (sponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers) and Siena High School for girls (sponsored by the Dominican Sisters of San Rafael). In 1972, the schools merged and became co-educational under the name of Justin-Siena High School. The De La Salle Christian Brothers became the sole sponsor of Justin-Siena in June 2006. With such a rich heritage, Justin-Siena bears a distinction of educational excellence that ensures the school is always moving forward as our motto suggests—Sempre Avanti. We take pride in our current students and graduates who continue to serve and lead in their communities.

Our Lasallian Heritage

The Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools (also known as the De La Salle Christian Brothers) is a Roman Catholic teaching order founded in France in 1680 by John Baptist de La Salle, a Catholic priest. Originally serving the purpose of educating the young, with a particular concern to those of modest or limited means, the De La Salle Christian Brothers currently sponsor approximately 1,000 institutions in more than 80 countries around the world. Their Founder, St. John Baptist de La Salle, is regarded today as the patron saint of all teachers. It is from this rich legacy lasting more than 330 years that we celebrate our Lasallian traditions everyday, throughout our campus, and in all that we do.

WELCOME In every endeavor, we aim to cultivate growth of the mind, body, and spirit. Like our Founder, St. John Baptist de La Salle, we guide our students to become all God made them to be, and a strong partnership with parents is essential in achieving this goal.

Advisory Program The purpose of advisory is two-fold: to ensure that all students are seen, known and loved, and to help positively shape student culture through a relationship-focused, student-centered program.

Stan Cordero Dean of Student Life scordero@justin-siena.org 707.255.0950 ext. 609

What to Know: • •

New students will find out their faculty/staff Advisor at the start of the school year Parents will have the opportunity to meet their child’s Advisor(s) at Student-led Conferences after the first semester

This initiative has been an opportunity to live ideals of our heritage and our mission. Advisory is a dedicated time for a small cohort of students and an adult advisor to foster whole-person growth through authentic relationships. Students are paired with an advisor, and advisors serve as mentors and coaches, becoming elder brothers and sisters to our students just as St. John Baptist de La Salle envisioned. Through the cultivation of relationships, exploration of social-emotional learning, as well as acquiring practical metacognitive and academic skills, we can provide space for students to become their best selves.

My Child’s Advisor(s)/Notes:

Student Culture We are JS; We are ALLHEART Being all ALLHEART means two things at the same time. It is about making the most of what we have been given, regardless of our starting points. And, as we become all we were made to be, we live our lives for the benefit of others. Being ALLHEART means taking action. We believe, we love, and we will. We Believe: Only by believing in ourselves and each other will we reach our full potential. Belief is the confidence of knowing that our lives have purpose, and that God is with us. We Love: We love, so we fully give ourselves to others. Only in the context of love will we become who we were made to be—individually and collectively. We Will: Willpower is present within all of us. We have the power to will a better reality into existence.

The Justin-Siena Fund— Annual Giving Every year, Justin-Siena parents watch their students thrive in the Lasallian Catholic learning community we provide. The Justin-Siena Fund is each parent’s primary philanthropic responsibility as it supports the school’s highest needs in the current year. Annual giving supports programs to ensure we attract fantastic faculty and staff, provide rigorous academics, and offer an array of athletic, artistic and co-curricular programing. Leadership level giving begins at $1,966, the year of our founding, and gratefully appreciate support at any level. Through annual gifts, Justin-Siena relies on the continued involvement and generosity of our alumni, alumni parents, grandparents, and friends to guarantee that our programs foster growth and provide opportunities for student achievement in each academic year. Justin-Siena parents participate in annual giving through the Parent Pledge Program. Contributions are 100% tax-deductible and ensure that all students will receive the very best educational experience possible. Our most important goal is 100% participation by all families. Payments can be made monthly throughout the fiscal year (July 1— June 30).
