Namaste

There is a ring in the name of India. The sounds of bells, conch shells, religious chanting, put you on a transcendental high. The roar of the tiger, song of the nightingale, and dance of the peacock are part of a truly mesmerizing ambience. The humming of industrial activity and futuristic development reveal a buoyant economy. Add to this the call of vibrant and colorful costumes, decorations, festivities, lilting music, folklore renditions, hand-cr afted ar tifacts, puppetry, and you have an incr edible wonder land that is India. India stretches from the snow-covered Himalayan heights of the north and the tropical rain forests of the south and tapers off into the Indian Ocean between the Bay of Bengal on the east and the Arabian Sea on the west. Its geographic features give it a seasonal quality different from what one may have witnessed anywhere else. In fact, the monsoons, or rainy seasons, summer and winter are one of a kind. Journey with us to India this evening and feel its symphony in di versity and strike the righ chords for a perfect sojourn.

Enjoy your evening!

iPad

There’s A for Tha n App t!

Lot #1

Fund A Need When school opens in August, all students will receive an iPad as part of a new 1:1 iPad program being launched for the 2013-14 academic year. Widely identified as an important educational tool with an immense capacity for learning and engaging with peers on campus and around the globe, these iPads are just the beginning of a new era of excellence in education at Justin-Siena. The cost for each device is included in tuition to assure every student is able to participate in the program. The iPads come pre-loaded with basic educational tools, or “apps”. We don’t want to stop there. The Fund A Need for the 2013 Great Party will focus on enhancing this new 1:1 iPad program by enabling the purchase of additional apps and other possible ‘enhancements’ that don’t come bundled with our initial purchase. While apps can be inexpensive on an individual basis, the necessary site licenses, support, and training for a school-wide app are not generally included with the purchase price. There are more than 1,500,000 apps in the marketplace, and that number is growing exponentially each week. We want only a few great apps that will specifically support classroom work or schoolwide programs.

8

The cost of an app for all students/faculty members can run from $1 to $5 each. In addition to the actual cost of the app, we must pay an annual licensing fee, additional training and support fee. The school-wide cost can total $500 to $5,000 or more for each app, depending on its use. Your gift to the Great Party Fund A Need will open the door to a myriad of teaching and learning possibilities that, in some ways, will fundamentally change education at Justin-Siena for the students entrusted to our care. This year, faculty and staff members of the Ed Tech Committee have been piloting various educational apps for note taking and note organizing, text annotation, Cloud storage, presentations tools and more – see the sample apps described below. Your support for the FUND A NEED will help us purchase these apps as additional tools for our 1:1 iPad program and will continue to assure that we have the

Evernote—students can collect information from anywhere into a single place. From text notes to web pages to files to snapshots, everything is always at their fingertips. It also allows them to work with classmates, share notes and collaborate on projects. TI-Nspire—app that will be a huge help in math. It has a built in geometry program, and a graphing utility that allows photos to be taken and instantly placed into a graph for analysis, statistics applications and much more. It also lets each student be a fully engaged participant and interact with the presentation through polls, quizzes, videos, drawing interactivity, websitesharing, self-guided quizzes and more. Needless to say, it is a teacher’s dream come true. It allows teachers to easily create and share interactive lessons, receive feedback on student device use, assess learning in real time, and personalize instruction for students who are logged into the Nearpod app.
