Home to about 5.69 million residents, Singapore has quietly developed into one of Asia’s top tourist destinations thanks to its delicious cuisine, kind locals, advanced technology, and gorgeous sights. But even amid Singapore’s emergence as an increasingly popular vacation spot, it still doesn’t attract as many visitors as Japan, China, and certain other countries in Asia, which is home to about 4.56 billion individuals. To help tourists learn more about the island state and plan their travel itineraries accordingly, here’s a deeper look at Singapore.
Language and Culture Singapore’s official languages are English, Mandarin (specifically a Singaporean dialect thereof), Malay, and Tamil. Consequently, the world’s two most popular languages, English and Mandarin, are widely spoken in the country – a major selling point for many tourists who wish to communicate effectively with a large number of locals.

And on the cultural side, these locals are known for their kindness, politeness, and willingness to engage with tourists, including at restaurants. Singapore has long appealed to foodies, and as of April 2022, vaccinated visitors can dine in as they please. Notwithstanding Singaporeans’ inherent courtesy, it also bears mentioning that tourism accounted for about 4% of the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) in pre-pandemic 2019 – meaning that visitors make a meaningful contribution to the local economy.
Relaxed COVID-19 Travel Restrictions In 2020 and 2021, Singapore made headlines for its comparatively lax COVID-19 restrictions for residents. As the nation is an island and is home to just 5.69 million persons, as highlighted, it was somewhat easier to keep the virus at bay. Now, as more countries are beginning to reopen their borders to visitors in an effort to jumpstart tourism, Singapore is extending this relative flexibility to tourists. As of April 2022, fully vaccinated adults (as well as unvaccinated children under the age of 12) can enter the nation without quarantining. Unvaccinated individuals, it bears mentioning, will not be allowed into Singapore even with a negative test, according to government officials.
Things to See and Do Singapore’s array of things to see and do includes the gorgeous Gardens by the Bay, Universal Studios Singapore, and the Singapore Zoo. These and other destinations are open for business, and Singapore doesn’t currently require masks to be worn outside (once again, as of April 2022).
