Unlike other sports, baseball doesn’t have a game-ending clock. It’s a game of patience, as the long games depend on how many pitchers are used and how long they take between tosses. It’s also hard to predict which team is the best until after multiple games.
Since 1876, Major League Baseball has been around. Its seasons have been long, with several dozen games or more running. The 162-game schedule that follows today is the longest in professional sports.

THE H I S T O R Y Since the National League was first established in 1876, the number of games has increased significantly. This can be attributed to the growth of the country’s population and the number of games played. In 1876, the league had 70 games per team, but in 1879, it had 84.
The number of games continued to increase until the 154-game schedule was introduced in 1892. There were minor adjustments during the following decades, such as the 140 implemented in 1919 due to the bird flu pandemic. However, by 1920, the 154-game schedule was almost standard.
MOTI V A T I O N F O R CHANGES The concept of playing 70-game seasons was first established in response to economics. Since individual games were becoming more popular, team owners and players believed that fans would want to know when the games would be held. The owners and players thought the sport would be more successful with a well-defined schedule.
They then established a well-defined schedule that the public could easily plan on attending. This was done in the days before mass media was introduced. Before the National League was established, professional baseball teams played before crowds to make a few bucks. During this period, teams traveled to various parts of the country and played before small groups.
Eventually, they realized that organizing could be a better way to make money. Some factors that led to the increase in the number of games included the weather, travel time, and the potential audiences. Rainouts were also common during this period, and teams could not always play every half of the season.

COMP A R E D T O O THER SPORTS According to some, the more extended season in professional baseball is because it requires more games to determine which team is better. In baseball, luck is more involved than in other games, such as basketball. As a result, more games are needed to get an accurate gauge of a team’s performance.
In professional baseball, it is believed that a team can beat any other team on any given day under the right circumstances. A pitcher can easily defeat the mighty New York Yankees. In addition, certain factors can affect a game’s outcome. For instance, an error by a single player can cost a team a victory.
In professional baseball, teams play a series of games against each other. These games are usually from 2 to 5 games, and the groups typically travel to a different locations for the games. The other reason for the more extended season is that it allows the players to get more rest.
