VOLUNTEERING LED INTO TEACHING

As the youngest of three sons, Daylen Douglas spent most of his elementary and middle school years as a shy, quiet student. He did his work, and he avoided trouble. Rachelle Douglas didn’t want her son to be another face in the crowd. She wanted school employees and his peers to know him.

So she always volunteered for roles on the school Parent Teacher Associations (PTAs), helping coordinate African-American readins at Audubon Traditional Elementary, later serving as vice president of programs at Jefferson County Traditional Middle, and then continuing with programs at Louisville Male High.

“If I wasn’t in the building, he very well could have gotten lost in the shuffle and missed out on some opportunities,” Douglas said.

“That is a benefit of volunteering at school.”

Douglas always worked but found time on lunch breaks and days off to be a presence and a helper in school. Her visits to school were not extensive but frequent enough where other students recognized her face and grew to know her title, “Daylen’s mom.”

The quiet and shy Daylen has since come into his own, Douglas said, even helping to share important school information with his marching band and track and field peers during the pandemic. Daylen graduated from Louisville Male High in May, and he was honored with a $1,000 June Key Scholarship by the 15th District Parent Teacher Association (PTA). The scholarship was one of 17 awarded by the 15th District PTA. The family learned about the scholarship after a Louisville Male High counselor emailed information to the seniors.

Daylen is now headed to Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia, where the once-quiet child will stand tall in the school’s marching band and drum line. He plans to major in education.

Daylen started working during the pandemic to devote money to college, and all scholarships add up and help, Douglas said.

Volunteering in schools also allowed Rachelle Douglas to closely witness who works in schools and what drives them. By the time Daylen reached middle school, Rachelle switched careers and became a classroom teacher. Douglas is now a third-grade teacher at Stopher Elementary.

Because Daylen was in the traditional school track, he attended all 12 of his school years with some of the same students, especially in middle and high school.

“I became a lot of people’s parents,” Rachelle Douglas said.

“They would all reach out to me. By the time we got to Male, they knew me. Sometimes I would just run in and run out, but I would always see familiar faces. It felt good for them to say, ‘Hey, Ms. Douglas!’”

15TH DISTRICT PTA AWARDS $18K IN SCHOLARSHIPS The 15th District PTA proudly distributed $18,000 in scholarship funds to the Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) Class of 2021 graduates.

Each year, the PTA awards scholarships to graduates from schools where the Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) is in good standing.

The 15th District PTA serves and supports nearly 150 PTAs and PTSAs throughout Jefferson County, including JCPS and Anchorage Public School. The focus of the 15th District PTA is to embody the mission of the PTA, which is making every child’s potential a reality by engaging and empowering families and communities to advocate for all children.

The 15th District PTA’s goal for the year is to strengthen our dedication and passion to advocate for all children and their right to receive a quality education no matter their demographics, ethnicity, or household income. We are here to help ensure that each local unit knows of the resources, programs, scholarship opportunities, and family engagement opportunities that will not only help each school but also advance our entire district together. In doing so, we want to create strong foundations for children, and children need adults to advocate for their best interests. Please consider our mission when choosing to support your child and their school’s PTA. You can express support by joining the school’s PTA, donating to your school’s PTA, or giving your time or resources to the 15th District PTA. We would be honored to have your help!

15TH DISTRICT PTA HOSTS SPELLING BEE The 15th District PTA Spelling Bee will be held on Wed., Feb. 2, in the auditorium at Valley High. Each year, JCPS elementary and middle schools host winter spelling bees and send the school’s winner to compete in the 15th District PTA Spelling Bee. The competition is held before an audience of parents/ guardians and educators and frequently includes tense competition that may last two hours. The top three finishers receive trophies, and the 15th District PTA awards cash prizes.

The winner advances to the Kentucky Derby Festival Spelling Bee, typically held in March, and includes the top spellers from throughout Kentucky and Southern Indiana.

REFLECTIONS ENCOURAGES STUDENT CREATIVITY Each fall, JCPS students of all grade levels and abilities are encouraged to participate in their school’s Reflections Arts Program. Students submit winning school entries into the district competition with categories of Dance, Film, Literature, Music Composition, Photography, and Visual Arts. Winners from the 15th District PTA advance to state and, ultimately, national competitions, and all district award recipients are celebrated at a special evening event where the art is displayed for families. This year’s school Reflections winning entries must be transferred to 15th District PTA organizers by Fri., Oct. 15. The awards event will be held on Thurs., Dec. 16, at the Youth Performing Arts School (YPAS). For at least the past four years, JCPS students have progressed to the national competition.

Reflections allows school PTAs/PTSAs to encourage a creative outlet for students in all grade levels and abilities. The 2021-22 Reflections theme is “I will change the world by ….” The National PTA website has fliers in English and Spanish, entry guidelines, and helpful information for schools to operate their programs. Today PTA’s role is more important than ever in connecting parents, teachers, and administrators and in supporting critical school needs.

We want every family to join the PTA because we can do more together than apart. We believe that more family involvement in schools will help all students. The 15th District PTA Board is here to help you start—or restart—your PTA.

How do I become a member?

To become a member, all you must do is join. In most schools, this is about $5 a person. Students may also join in middle and high school.

What is required once I become a member?

Nothing is required of you or your time. You are encouraged to find ways to support your school and PTA with whatever time you have available or with whatever resource you have accessible. The PTA will help host school and evening events where volunteers and support are always needed. During some of these events, you may as a member be needed to vote. Larger PTA memberships give more power to the voice of parents/guardians. The presence of more parents/guardians and family in schools and at school events empowers all students with a supportive community.

The 15th District PTA Clothing Assistance Program (CAP) serves students and families with new and gently used clothing, shoes, and accessories. CAP—a partnership between the 15th District PTA and the JCPS Diversity, Equity, Poverty (DEP) Unit—works closely with schools to provide help for students and families with the most need. There is never a charge.

CAP: 50 YEARS OF SUPPORTING STUDENTS, FAMILIES

CAP is enriched by generous individual and corporate donors, and CAP relies on the generous muscles and hearts of volunteers.

CAP served more than 4,200 students during the 2019-20 school year before the pandemic prohibited family access inside CAP in mid-March. But CAP never stopped operating. CAP continued to deliver items for families on porches and hotel lobbies all spring.

During the 2021-22 school year, a crew of regular volunteers became personal shoppers, providing generous boxes of clothing, shoes, blankets, and toiletries for more than 765 families and 1,390 students.

When gently used clothing could not be accepted, individual and corporate groups stepped up to help CAP. From January through May 2021, corporate generosity included the equivalent of five loaded tractor-trailer trucks—131 pallets—of new clothing, shoes, blankets, school supplies, small appliances, toiletries, cloth masks, and hand sanitizer. Students and families come in all sizes, and CAP serves them all. CAP offers a wide variety of items, from maternity clothing and infant/toddler items to all children’s and adult sizes.

CAP’s work is never done. Bringing your PTA/PTSA to CAP is a great team-building activity and continues the legacy of a handful of caring parents who started a small clothes closet in 1971. Ideally, schools could collect items in a schoolwide clothing campaign in the weeks leading up to a CAP visit. There are always needs that change with the seasons and the circumstances. When the pandemic left CAP unable to accept gently used clothing, Amy Nguyen and her family opened their home as a donation site. They worked together to sort and tag thousands of clothing articles in their basement and deliver them to CAP.

Please support CAP this school year. CAP plans to host campaigns to collect the following items in 2021: • September—hoodies • October—gloves • November/December— winter coats

Support CAP, Support Students Schools are encouraged to send volunteers to CAP twice each year. Typically, volunteers work from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Below are suggested weeks for schools to visit, but we’ll work with your group to find the best time and day. ADVOCACY

PTA’s mission is to make every child’s potential a reality by engaging and empowering families and communities to advocate for all children. PTA was founded on advocacy. It is the cornerstone of what PTA is about and is clearly stated in our mission.

The 15th District PTA started a special program during 2020 in which parents/guardians or other residents could reach out and request support on behalf of a student or family. The program is PTA Community Advocacy Referrals Empowering Students (CARES).

This is a two-pronged approach to community advocacy: • Advocating for our families—We want to help you with your advocacy issues. We want to help you find your voice so that you can advocate for yourself, your students, your school, or your community.

• Helping our families—We can provide tangible assistance for families when they need it the most.

TRAINING The 15th District PTA will host Back-to-School, Back-to-PTA at 9 a.m. on Sat., Aug. 28, at Noe Middle. This event includes a breakfast, training sessions, and a vendor showcase that is tailored for PTAs and PTSAs that need to begin the 2021-22 school year strong and informed. SCHOLARSHIPS The deadline to apply for scholarship applications for the 2021-22 school year is Fri., Mar. 25. Graduating seniors are eligible for the Jane Boyer Scholarship, June Key Scholarship, Ty Scroggins Memorial Scholarship, and Evangeline J. Sansome Scholarship. In 2021, the 15th District PTA awarded 17 students with $18,000 in scholarships. This is a great motivator for high schools to have a well-functioning PTSA that is in compliance.

AWARDS BANQUET The 15th District PTA hosts an annual awards banquet each May to celebrate PTA successes during the year. This event typically includes a festive dinner and awards for many schools in a variety of categories, such as male involvement, newsletter, website, membership campaign, volunteer participation, and special projects as well as awards for outstanding school nurses and exceptional volunteers. The deadline to submit applications for the awards categories will be Fri., Mar. 25.

FUNDRAISING With proper planning, your PTA can help raise funds for important improvement projects that enhance a school’s opportunities for students and employees. But all schoolwide fundraising must be approved by the Jefferson County Board of Education (JCBE) and typically before the current school year begins. Ideas for schoolwide fundraising must be submitted to your principal on the first of May. There are also multiple regulations and guidelines that PTAs must follow. The Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) publishes these accounting procedures for schools in a document referred to as “Redbook.” The 15th District PTA can offer better understanding of these rules, and all schools will benefit by participating in a vendor’s fair in early 2022. This event, which has not yet been scheduled, will allow PTAs to learn about new opportunities for fundraising.
