FROM THE PRESIDENT Welcome to a new school year and an exciting new year for your Parent Teacher Association (PTA). This is a great time to plan and get excited as we make a difference in our schools and our students’ lives. I do have a few housekeeping items to remind you of to make sure the year starts off right.

• Officer List—Make sure we get information to you in a timely manner by filling out your officer list at kypta.org/forptaleaders/online-officer-list/.

• Financial Review—If you have not done this, contact 15th District immediately so we can get you in compliance.

• Be sure to submit your budget to your principal (Form SA-4B) and get it approved at your first general membership meeting.

• Get your National PTA Leaders kit at www.ptakit.org.

• Start your membership campaign.

• Work with your board to set goals, create a budget, and recruit volunteers for the upcoming year. Remember, a PTA is not just one or two people, but your entire school community!

I hope that you are able to check off everything on this list to make sure you are ready for this school year. I know that this year is starting out with some question marks regarding the proposed state take-over of JCPS. The dates for the hearing have been set, and the first date is September 10.

There is a planned rally that will take place at the Kentucky Board of Education that day. I hope you can join me and other PTA members as we show support to keep our voice in our district and keep our school board in place. Please stay tuned to our Facebook page and our website for more information. Also, please sign the petition at ourjcps.org.

While the possible take-over of JCPS is a great concern, remember that your voice in the school and your participation in the school are vital. Keep up the wonderful work that you are doing regardless of the results of the hearing.

The 2018-19 Local PTA Leader Kit includes valuable resources and leadership tools with information for incoming presidents as well as guides related to finance, membership, programs, advocacy, and communications. Submit Officers’ Lists Online School PTA/Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA) leaders can easily submit their new officers’ lists on the Kentucky PTA website. The information is shared with the 15th District PTA, and accurate information allows school PTAs/PTSAs to receive timely information about news, updates, and information to help their family engagement efforts succeed. Support CAP, Support Students Schools are scheduled to send volunteers to CAP twice each year. Typically, volunteers work from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. If there is a conflict with the dates below, contact us and we’ll work to find a better time for you to visit. National PTA Honors JCPS Students The National PTA recognized four JCPS students for their exceptional creative works in the 2017-18 Reflections Program. The four JCPS students are among a total of six Kentucky students to be honored nationally. The students are as follows: • Haylee Richter of DuPont Manual High—Award of Excellence in Dance Choreography • Natalie Keckler of Crosby Middle—Award of Excellence in Photography • Katie Ross Nelson of Dunn Elementary—Award of Excellence in Visual Arts • India Smith of DuPont Manual High—Award of Merit in Film Production To the left are two art pieces that the National PTA honored.

All Reflections pieces must follow a theme, which was “Within Reach” during the 2017-18 school year. The students are required to submit a written statement that connects their creative product with the theme. These are the statements that accompanied the two pieces.

“Being a girl can be hard. People tell you how to look and act. Sometimes I get frustrated and want to be inspired and comforted. I chose to make a quilt so I can reach out, wrap it around me, and be comforted. I chose amazing women— Audrey Hepburn, Josephine Baker, Frida Kahlo, Amelia Earhart, Malala Yousafzai, Valentinas Tereshkova, Claudette Colvin, Indira Gandhi, Coco Chanel, and Ruby Bridges—to put on it because when I look at them, inspiration is within reach. I chose a poem, Phenomenally, Phenomenal Woman by Maya Angelou because her words reach inside, comfort, and inspire me.”

Inaugural Women’s Event Is a Success The 15th District PTA Clothing Assistance Program (CAP), in conjunction with the JCPS Diversity, Equity, Poverty (DEP) Programs, hosted a special event on Saturday, May 12, to honor women.

Women’s Unsale was a community clothing and accessory giveaway in which women of all ages were invited to peruse tables and racks of gently used items and take all they wanted.

No school uniforms were distributed during this event. Volunteers at CAP expressed a desire to organize a women’s clothing giveaway after several clothing donation campaigns produced a prolific assortment of women’s items. CAP volunteer and retired JCPS teacher Julie Waterman acquired several hundred new makeup items, which were also distributed at the event.

The event served 171 guests and attracted two dozen volunteers.

Cruisin’ for Kennedy Montessori Kennedy Montessori Elementary earned $300 for the school’s Robotics Team through the Chrysler’s Cars 4 Classrooms Program. The school partnered with Louisville Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, 5311 Dixie Highway. The driveathon allows schools to earn $10 for each test drive, and the school earns additional money for photos that are shared on Facebook using special hashtags.

As more families of elementary students learn about CAP and its mission, they are donating their gently used infant and toddler clothing. This excess led to a special event on Monday, May 7, where CAP hosted students from South Park Teenage Parent Program (TAPP) and Westport TAPP. Volunteers arranged tables and racks to showcase quality infant and toddler clothing, blankets, and parenting accessories. School employees handpicked the students to attend this event, and students left with at least two bulging bags of clothing items and accessories for themselves and their children. In addition to shopping gently used clothing for themselves, 15 of the students also received new athletic shoes, which are available at CAP. To accommodate the girls and help them find everything they needed, an assortment of regular CAP volunteers were joined by volunteers from JCPS Central Offices as well as a couple from Northeast Christian Church, which has a partnership with Westport TAPP.

Kimberly Cecil-Jones is the 15th District PTA’s Honorary Membership Chair. She is a dynamic speaker who is able to visit your school event and offer a passionate message about joining your school’s PTA, the benefits of membership, and the opportunities that result from increased involvement and advocacy. Cecil-Jones is a marketing professional, 2012 Ms Plus America, and host of The Jones Report (WLOU).

To request an appearance, contact 15th District PTA second vice president Shawn Summerville a month before your event and by the third of each month. Summerville can be reached at daaville@yahoo.com or 386-1455.

The following information should be sent to Summerville: name of your PTA; name of your school; time, date, and location of scheduled event; contact person’s name, phone number, and email address; and any special needs you have for the event.

Participate in Reflections Give your school’s students confidence in their abilities to explore ideas and learn through the arts. Enroll your school now in Reflections, the 2018-19 national arts awards program.

Each year, hundreds of thousands of students in preschool through grade twelve create and submit original works in the areas of dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography, and visual arts. Students may participate in the national awards program through their school’s PTA. The 2018-19 theme “Heroes Around Me” will spark imagination and creativity in school and at home. Encourage your school to imagine, create, and celebrate with Reflections. Reflections submissions are due to the 15th District PTA office by 12 noon on October 19.
