This summer, I found some time for reflection. I figured that the only reason I never really like the autumn months is that they herald the arrival of winter. However, I came to the realisation that well, they are not really so bad! The temperature settles until it’s kind of perfect... in fact, the sea is still warm! In the world of beauty and fashion, we are introduced to new collections, and I can start flipping through the magazines while still on the sun lounger, and get excited with images of sleek and elegant, indulgent but minimalist trends. All the dolls and guys lack now is you to reel them in, harness their hair and make it shine and get their nails ready to sparkle in deep luscious colours! Make up is back! No more excuses. Look at that skin first: reverse any summer damage and drill some good advice into those beautiful faces, then paint them to perfection! Launch into the new season by giving your salon a make-over... Sometimes all you need is a paint job and maybe replacing those beauty posters from 1989. In a collaboration between LillyMae who launched their Autumn/Winter 14/15 collection and TheSmartSkinClinic, guests were treated to a feast for the senses which included fabulous clothes, make up, hair as well as nail makeovers by Beauty Inc. There was also live demonstrations of Botox and Filler treatments by Dr Joanna Delia. Guests also enjoyed delicious refreshments created by Chef Bart at Marcel's Kitchen, using delicatessen products and fine wines from Dical House, Mosta.

THE NEW MODEL TODAY INTERNATIONAL CONTEST Saturday, September 6th was the final night of the New Model Today International Contest. The event took place in the Ballroom of the Grand Hotel in Riccione and was the culmination of a whole week’s training with thirty six models from various countries across the world.

Malta’s representative was selected during a competition which was organised by Ferramoda. The person who was chosen was Claire Ciantar (supernovamodel.com), who was also the model who won this year’s Malta Fashion Awards.

The models who participated in the New Model Today International Contest were evaluated by a jury composed of members from various sectors of the fashion industry, including the famous fashion agencies, the Alpa Model Agency, Urman and the Woman of Milan. The models were first streamed into twelve finalists.

During this event, Juliana Scerri Ferrante, a Maltese designer launched her luxury women’s collection, Ferragiu. The high-end pieces are made from Maltese and Italian silks with lace trimmings, which were skillfully woven by Maltese and Gozitan artisans. Other designers who were also present at the event were Emilio Schubert from Rome and Neapolitan designer, Gianni Molaro.

If needed, soak for an additional 5 minutes at the very most. 4. Remove the wrap from the fingers and gently push the product off the nails with the ORLY Pusher & Remover. Removal Tip: Be light handed. No need to force off the

1. Start off with a dry manicure. Sanitise, push back cuticles, buff nails, and remove any excess oil with Gel FX 3-in-1 Cleanser. 2. Lightly prime just the nail tips with Vitamin-infused Gel FX Nail Tip Primer. Avoid the surrounding skin and let the nails air dry for 30 seconds. It will appear shiny. Application Tip: Less is more. Apply sparingly and only to the nail tips. 3. Apply a thin layer of Vitamin-infused Gel FX Basecoat to fingers and cure.* Apply to thumbs and cure separately. Application Tip: Think thin. Be light handed when applying basecoat. 4. After curing, use ORLY Dry Brush to brush down the tacky layer, ensuring proper curing and preventing any crawling or wrinkling.

Apply second coat and cure. Application Tip: Seal it. Seal the nail’s edge first to prevent thick tips and chipping. Keep in mind that darker colours may need an extra coat. 6. Apply a thin, even coat of Gel FX Topcoat and cure.* Application Tip: Seal it. Seal the nail’s edge first to prevent thick tips and chipping. 7. Remove tacky layer with Gel FX 3-in-1 Cleanser and Gel FX Lint-Free Wipe. Application Tip: For a high gloss shine, use a new wipe every two to three nails. 8. NASHI ARGAN OIL

WHAT IS ARGAN OIL? Argan Oil comes from a tree called argan. Since its native location is Morocco, it is also often referred to as Moroccon Oil. It is extracted from the kernels of the argan tree to be used as a moisturiser, conditioner and softener for skin and hair. Often dubbed ‘liquid gold’ for its amazing qualities, it contains large amounts of beneficial nutrients, including Vitamin E and fatty acids. When applied correctly its proven results are clear to see and many people are using Argan Oil for their hair as well for their body.

Argan Oil therefore has a number of benefits when used on hair. It can act as a moisturiser to fight dandruff and avoid a dry scalp. It can also promote the growth of healthy, strong hair as opposed to thin, brittle hair. It can even undo some of the damage brought about by chemical treatments and dyes and can be used to treat split ends. It is an excellent agent for taming frizz and promoting shine and gloss, for softer, more manageable hair. Argan Oil is non-irritating and actually reverses much of the damage caused by artificial chemicals and extensive use of certain hair treatments.

WHY USE ARGAN OIL FOR YOUR HAIR?

With Argan Oil gaining in popularity, there are a lot of products which claim to be ‘Pure Argan Oil’ and are available on the internet and even in stores. Unfortunately, since Argan Oil is so difficult and time-consuming to extract and process, Argan Oil products are not always genuine and are often diluted or over-processed. Even getting your Argan Oil in Morocco doesn’t guarantee its authenticity.

Argan Oil can be used either on its own or as an ingredient in a shampoo, conditioner or mask treatment. It is effective both ways and contains healing properties that are able to correct the detrimental effects caused by recurrent chemical processing on most people’s hair. In general, chemical processing strips away moisture from the hair, leaving it exposed to weather elements, such as strong winds, low humidity and excessive sunlight. When this happens, the hair breaks and sometimes with naturally black hair it also turns brown. The only remedy is a treatment that is full of nutrients and there is no other product that is better at nourishing the hair than Nashi Argan Oil.

The biggest consideration of pure Argan Oil is the price. Since it is a rare oil, it does come at a premium. However, it is definitely worth it As suppliers of genuine Argan Oil we are weary of products which are sold in clear or plastic bottles. Most producers of quality Argan Oil wouldn’t even consider putting this liquid gold in anything other than a dark coloured glass bottle. Light breaks down the oil’s best properties and keeping it inside something dark is the most effective way to store Argan Oil.

THE PROBLEM

THE FACTS

As nail technicians, we often get lost doing what we love most: nail art, nail extensions, using gels or acrylic, filing, shaping, buffing or drilling and we get carried away for hours on end ensuring that our clients’ nails look immaculate before they walk out of the nail salon.

We know very little about the potential hazards of chemical inhalation that we, nail technicians, are being exposed to on a daily basis. We certainly don’t spend much time thinking about this. However, according to the Journal of Immigrant and Minority Health entitled ‘Results from a community-based occupational health survey of Vietnamese-American nail salon workers’, the selfreported, work-related health symptoms that nail technicians who were surveyed were experiencing, were reported in significant percentages. These symptoms included skin and respiratory irritation, breathing difficulties, headaches as well as having trouble concentrating.

FACE OF MALTA 2014 DAJANA LAKETIC Every year, the competition Face of Malta is held and broadcast on local television. This event is directed by Glow Promotions under the management of Alan J. Darmanin and Jeff Francalanza. Each June, forty female models compete in this event. This does not only give them the opportunity to win the competition title but to also gain the experience of appearing on local television, magazines and newspapers. This yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s crowned winner is Dajana Laketic, a 23 year-old beauty who lives in San Gwann. Dajana has Serbian roots but has lived almost all her life in Malta. Dajana is currently a student and also works in a private company. Dajana is able to speak five different languages and would someday love to work in Brussels as a translator. Dajana loves to excercise in order to keep herself fit and says that every woman should look after her health and take good care of herself. She has been modelling for the past five years and has taken part in various fashion shows and competitions, including Face of Malta back in 2010. Preparations for the 2015 Face of Malta calendar are underway. The twelve finalists of this beauty pageant are featured in the calendar. While owning your own salon means that you are able to design it in a way that appeals to you, the one thing that is most important to keep in mind is your client. Your salon must convey a specific image which is professional and which will be memorable to the client, leaving them with a positive feeling. There are a number of interior decorating aspects which one should keep in mind when it comes to choosing colours, themes and lighting for your salon. Here are some suggestions:

1. PICK A THEME Different themes work for different kind of salons. It is a good idea to choose a suitable theme which works for you and the space that you have. Address certain issues, such as a dark corner, etc. first.

A 'REBIRTH' FOR AVANT GARDE SALON IN FGURA Celine Falzon, is a well-known personality due to her regular appearances in the local tele serial Deja Vu. However, some people may not be aware that Celine is also a talented and creative hair stylist who has had her own salon in Fgura for the past twelve years. This year, senior stylist and salon owner Celine decided that it was about time to give the salon a new look: and what a transformation it has been! The old yellow and blue split level curves of the old salon have been replaced with a wide, open plan salon in grey, black and white. SAFETY FOR BEAUTY PROFESSIONALS

Providing health and safety guidelines for the electrical equipment in your salon will ensure the well-being of both your clients and yourself. If your electrical equipment is not properly looked after, it might become a hazard that may cause serious consequences for peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s health and possibly lead to liability. It is therefore important to stay on top of things and to keep the following information at hand. It is important to be aware of your responsibilities and to ensure that you work in a safe environment at all times.

CHECK YOUR EQUIPMENT

Equipment in beauty salons are subjected to considerable wear and tear. It is therefore advisable to set up a system which encourages you to go through all electrical equipment in your facility on a regular basis. Make sure that your devices, such as depilation equipment, hair dryers, wax pots and sunbeds are in good condition and are SAFE TO USE. Only make use of equipment that you have received trained for. If you suspect that an item might be dangerous, take all the necessary precautions and eliminate the risk. Make sure that your equipment is tested by a qualified electrician at least once a year, together with regular inspections to detect simple faults, such as frayed cables or cracked plugs.

KNOW YOUR FUSES

If an electrical appliance should fail, it can draw heavy current from the main supply that may generate heat and cause fire. To ensure that this does not happen, make sure that all your electrical appliances are fitted with fuses of the correct rating. To guarantee the best possible protection, it is advisable to have fuses that blow at a current loading which is just over the normal current. Different appliances have different powerratings and draw different amounts of current, so fuses should vary accordingly. Also, it is important to note that fuses come in a large variety of ratings.

KEEP IT SIMPLE

Following everyday simple rules when it comes to electrical safety is the way to go. Provide adequate sockets at each workstation, avoid adapters and the overloading of sockets. Ensure that all your hot or cold pipes are suitably bonded and earthed and make sure that none of your employees are misusing any piece of equipment. Keep a record of all the tests and inspections which you carry out, so as to keep track of all your devices. Fit all work stations with well-maintained and adequate lighting. Ensure that your salon is fitted with fire extinguishers that are replaced regularly as they will otherwise expire. Clean up any spills or messes as soon as they happen. This is important so as to avoid any unnecessary risks. Unplug all equipment before cleaning or repairing. Move flammable objects away from electrical sources and keep in mind that certain chemicals in some of your products are highly flammable. Carefully follow the instructions of use for both your electrical equipment and your products.
