It’s October, the nights are drawing in so quickly, summer is but a distant memory and, as I write, the clocks will soon be going back again. If that is enough to make you feel tired then spare a thought for Will Riches, who has completed a 200-miles NON-STOP charity walk in memory of his best friend. What an amazing effort by this young man. We certainly cannot begrudge him his 17hour sleep after he finished his epic journey. Talk about hard-earned! Will’s walk was on course to bring in over £4,000 for the Teenage Cancer Care Trust and I am sure Just Cromer readers will join us in congratulating him and agree that this is a cause well worth backing. Read all about it on Page 4. Throughout this issue there are many examples of people who are committed to doing good for the community, including Cromer Ladies Lifeboat Guild and Supporters who have celebrated their 50th annniversary. They have have raised an amazing £350,000 over those years to help save lives at sea – Page 16. Cromer’s Community Shed has some men of many talents who are looking to help out however they can. Why not pay them a visit or even join them? – Page 6. Hundreds of people turned out for the funeral of John Lee, a well-known former councillor and crab fisherman, who dedicated much of his life to serving the people of Cromer and North Norfolk - Page 11.

Will power raises £4,000 A walk to honour his best friend has left Will Riches footsore but has raised almost £4,000 for the Teenage Cancer Trust. Will tested his endurance with a 200-mile, non-stop hike around Norfolk in memory of Henry Hill, who died in February last year from fibrolamellar carcinoma – a rare form of cancer. The 20-year-old – who is well-known in Cromer where he sells ice creams in the summer –began his epic 74-hour challenge in Cromer at 8am on Wednesday, September 13, and finished the following Saturday morning at 11am at Henry’s home village of Marsham. “It was really tough staying awake once I got well into the walk, but I had amazing support from friends and family who came along to walk with me,” said Will. “The nights were particularly hard so that’s the time when I needed them the most.” During the night sections he was accompanied by friend Kitty Foss and work friends Euan Carrier and Max Sterry, with support from mum Tracy, who provided essential food and medical back-up. The route started on the coast path from Cromer to Great Yarmouth, followed the Wherryman’s Way into Norwich and then picked up Marriotts Way through Hellesdon and Drayton to Aylsham. Will then walked to Holt and on to Hunstanton, where he

Henry’s mum Lisa and sister Liv joined Will for the last leg of the walk from Aylsham to Marsham, including a lap of the high-school field. Both boys were pupils there. Lisa said: “It has been an emotional three days, particularly being at the school with them all. It’s amazing what Will has done for Henry and for the Teenage Cancer Trust. “Will and Henry were always off on these

kind of adventures. They’d head out in the morning and I wouldn’t see them all day, so it’s wonderful that Will has carried on doing the kind of thing they used to do together to support the charity.” Will has smashed his Go Fund Me target of £1,000 and is now closing in on the £4,000 mark. The fund will be staying open for anyone who would like to donate. He said: “I’m so grateful to everyone who has donated. I’ve been overwhelmed with how generous everyone has been. I also have to say a massive thank-you to everyone who walked with me and kept my spirits up, including my mum, my sister Emma, Kitty and her family, my boss Lee Sale and Mike Snelling from North Norfolk Surf Lifesaving Club. “I’d also like to thank sports therapist Juli Kett-Brodie for her support in preparation for the walk.” It’s the third time Will has raised money for the trust. He completed a 120-mile walk last year which raised £2,500 as well as previously pushing himself to do 500 press-ups a day for a month to raise another £450. “I was more prepared for the walk this time and managed to complete the distance without doing too much damage to my feet,” said Will. “I had an ice bath after I finished on Saturday and then slept for 17 hours.”

At your service, with a smile READY TO HELP: The multiskilled team at the Cromer Community Shed. Photo: BRUCE STRATTON. THE multi-skilled men at Cromer’s Community Shed are keen to put their helping hands to good use. After the Shed was officially opened by Mark Stuckey, one of the experts on the BBC Repair Shop, chairman Richard Wall explained: “We are certainly not just a men’s club, but here for all the adults in Cromer and surrounding villages who need the help we offer. “The wonderful thing is that we do this by having fun - the lovely, happy chatter makes

people enjoy being with us and soon join in, which starts the process of them feeling better.” Men’s Sheds started over 20 years ago in Australia and have an amazing success record of helping people. Cromer Community Shed offers a Repair Café service, so people can keep using items of sentimental value, stopping them ending up in landfill. Located at About With Friends unit, Middlebrook Way, NR27 9JR, the Shed

is a free service for the benefit of all in the community. It welcomes commissions to make things, especially for the community, like the crates for recycling plastic beach toys, which are on Cromer promenade. The Shed has identified building its own premises as the next target and a grant for half of the cost has been obtained. The new Shed is part of the proposal to redevelop the derelict area of North Lodge Park with four projects for the community.

Ocean Friendly school hosting extra open days The only Norfolk school to have won the Ocean Friendly Award is holding extra open days for prospective parents wanting to visit. Aldborough Primary School has seen an increase in interest from parents and carers since the award was announced, just before the summer holidays. "It really created a buzz," said head teacher Mrs Helen Bearman. "We're a little off the beaten track, so parents who find us are usually pretty bowled over when they visit!" "We're certainly very lucky with our facilities, but of course it's the people who make the school such a great place to learn

and work," says Mrs Bearman. The last Ofsted inspection noted how determined the school is to make the most of the opportunities for pupils presented by the ‘wonderful woodland setting.' Aldborough Primary School is only the eighth school in the UK to gain Ocean Friendly status from the Marine Conservation Society, and the first in Norfolk. "It's a very important subject," said Mrs Bearman. "People in general, and children in particular, are hugely interested in the environment and it's now at the heart of the curriculum." As part of the award, children had to

investigate topics such as pollution in the seas, overfishing and climate change. "We focused one of our family learning days on the award, where parents, grandparents and carers joined their children and school staff to study the subject." The open days start at 9.30am on Wednesday, November 15 and Wednesday, December 6. Anyone wishing to visit can call the office on 01263 761264 or email office@aldborough.norfolk.sch.uk Aldborough Primary School was last visited by Ofsted in March 2019 and was rated ‘Good'.

Blue Plaques mark the spot Long-serving members of the community and a famous suffragette who lived in Cromer have been commemorated by Blue Plaques. Peter Stibbons, chair of the Friends of Cromer Museum and co-ordinator for the town Blue Plaques scheme, commented: “We’re now up to 12 plaques. Information sheets are available at Cromer Museum and there’ll be a Blue Plaques walk soon.” EMILY DAVISON became a very active suffragette and is remembered for the way she lost her life after running into the path of King George V’s horse in the 1913 Epsom Derby. A postcard from The Red House (now Halsey House) indicates her love of sea bathing, even in November, while working in Cromer as a governess. Her plaque was unveiled by Halsey House resident and Cromer historian Stella Evans. MARY FIELD was, together with her brother, responsible for keeping the light burning

Libby is all set to Soldier On A coastal arts centre is hosting its first ever drama event this month, with a poignant presentation of a comic monologue. Soldiering On by Alan Bennett at the Belfry Centre for Music and Arts in Overstrand on Friday, October 27 (7.30) features amateur actress Libby Henshaw as Muriel Carpenter. Muriel is a strong stoical pillar of the community who battles on with her charity work and stiff upper lip as her finances and family life crumble around her following the death of her husband. Retired schoolteacher Libby, from Aylsham, has been involved in amateur dramatics since helping with school productions and involved with local theatre for 20 years as an actor, director and wardrobe mistress. “The Belfry creates the perfect intimate setting and atmosphere

for performing one of Alan Bennett’s timeless monologues and I’m looking forward to being part of their first drama night,” she said. “I have directed the play before, so I knew it would be challenging, but, playing the role, I can really appreciate the amount of work that goes into just learning Alan Bennett’s wonderful words, keeping the drama going on your own without cues from other actors, then portraying and sustaining the character.” Call 01263 579196 or 07763 339052 to book tickets (£10).

SHERINGHAM & DISTRICT PHILATELIC SOCIETY Members gathered on Monday, October 9 to enjoy a philatelic trip around the multitude of Greek islands. Peter Boyce, from the Norfolk and Norwich Philatelic Society, put on a superb display of stamps and covers, covering the earliest issues until the eventual union of the island groups with Greece. The strategic situation of the islands has meant that most of them have been taken over by foreign powers at some time or other. Each administration either

issued their own stamps or overprinted existing stock. Crete, for example, was divided into four parts at the end of the 19th Century and was governed by Italy, Russia, France and Britain! Peter’s great knowledge and interest in this subject stems from the time when he lived and worked in Greece. The next meeting of the Philatelic Society is on November 13, at 7.30pm, for the annual quiz night, at West Runton Church Hall. Visitors welcome.

AMNESTY MEETING FOR CROMER

North Norfolk Amnesty Group will be holding its next meeting at Merchants’ Place, Cromer, and new members are invited to go along. The group campaigns on human rights issues around the world and the next big event on the agenda is in December when the group, which has been going since 1981, will be taking part in Write for Rights, a UK-wide “write-a-thon”, when 12 human rights cases worldwide will be covered as part of a greetings cards campaign. Cards are sent to victims of injustice and/or their relations and letters are sent to the relevant authorities on their behalf. Meetings are normally held in members’ homes, to spread the travelling burden, but the meeting on Monday, October 23, will be at Merchants’ Place at 7pm. t Contact Jenny at jennykellynorfolk@hotmail.com

Farewell to proud Certificates for young helpers ambassador John

NORTH NORFOLK VIKINGS

Hundreds of mourners attended the funeral of John Lee - a former crab fisherman and Cromer councillor, who made an immense contribution to the town and area he loved. The funeral procession stopped outside the family crab stall in New Street which John’s father first opened in 1957, before arriving at Cromer’s St Peter and St Paul Church in Church Street. The Rev Jennie Hodgkinson, who opened the service, said Mr Lee’s passing had left a hole in the lives of all who knew him - but said he leaves behind “memories to treasure.” Mr Lee was an eighth-generation fisherman, selling his catch at the crab stall and later his and his wife Donna’s Hot Rocks restaurant in Garden Street. He was a Cromer town councillor and represented Suffield Park as a Conservative on North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) from 2011 to 2019. He served as chairman of the district council from 2016 to 2017, and its leader in 2018. North Norfolk MP Duncan Baker, who

Cromer

read his eulogy at the service, described him as a “straight talker”, with a “formidable reputation”. He was the “most decent, honourable man”, who was “above everything else a family man”. Following Mr Lee’s death in August aged 60, after a battle with cancer, many tributes were paid. “He understood the nature of local communities and would work with anyone and everyone to deliver – for Cromer and also the wider district,” said NNDC chief executive Steve Blatch. Council leader Tim Adams said he “made an immense contribution to Cromer and was a proud ambassador for the town – and for its fishing and business communities.” A man of integrity, well-respected across the political spectrum was recalled by Conservative Group Leader, Christopher Cushing. He said John served not only his council but the whole of North Norfolk. “Whenever you spoke to John, his pride and passion for Cromer shone through.”

North Norfolk Vikings swimmers Amy-Rose Thomas and Isaac Buchan have been awarded aquatic helpers certificates for their efforts and application following a set programme by the National Swimming Awarding Bodies. The two 14-year-olds have been assisting the current qualified coaches with the development sections of the club. A Vikings spokesman said: “Participation at development level has been very encouraging at the moment, and the club has a waiting list to join this section. With the shortage of coaches and teachers nationally, we thought about trying to give some of our squad members an introduction to the craft.” John Holden

Society’s fitting finale What’s on... Fri, 27 Oct - Sat, 28 Oct 7:30pm A NIGHT AT THE MUSICGHOULS - £10

Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society will close their 90th anniversary celebrations with a concert of glorious music by Mozart and Schubert. The concert will take place in St Peter’s Parish Church, Sheringham, on Saturday, November 18, at 7pm. Under the direction of David Ballard, the choir and orchestra will be joined by four soloists – soprano Rosamund Walton, alto Laurence Blyth, tenor Richard Symons and bass Julian ChouLambert. Mystery still surrounds the circumstances under which Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was commissioned by a stranger to write his

Requiem. He died before its completion, only adding to the air of foreboding that the work so effectively evokes. Composed in less than a week, the G Major Mass is an astonishingly great work of the 18-year-old Franz Schubert. Tickets are £18 (under 18s go free) and can be bought from the box office at Sheringham Little Theatre. Call 01263 822347 or visit www. sheringhamlittletheatre.com Tickets are also available in person from the North Norfolk Visitor Centre, in Louden Road, Cromer.

Fairport Convention at the pier Fairport Convention, the band that lit the folk-rock flame that led on to inspire 25 years of Cromer’s popular ‘Folk on the Pier’ festival are back at the Pavilion Theatre on Wednesday, November 1. It was the band’s long-standing bass player Dave Pegg who coined the phrase ‘the Best Gig on the North Sea’ when they first played Cromer Pier in 1997. Fairport Convention have been entertaining music lovers for over half a century, with 2023 being their 56th year. The band that launched British Folk-Rock will present a mix of long-established favourites and

some surprises from albums old and new. Fairport Convention have won a BBC Lifetime Achievement Award and Radio 2 listeners voted their ground-breaking album Liege & Lief 'The most Influential folk album of all time' and their story has been celebrated with television documentaries both on BBC4 and Sky Arts. The current line-up features founding member Simon Nicol on guitar and vocals, Dave Pegg on bass guitar and vocals, Ric Sanders on violin and Chris Leslie on bouzouki, mandolin, banjo, fiddle, and vocals. Celebrating our kings and queen An entertaining and interesting talk, with many illustrations and photos, was given by Phyllida Scrivens, on ‘Coronations and Royal Celebrations in Norwich’. Phyllida began by describing the coronation of Edward VII, which took place in August 1902 rather than in June of that year. The event had been postponed as the king unfortunately had had an appendectomy in June. The festivities went ahead anyway! These included Norwich Castle being spectacularly lit up by lightbulbs (a real achievement in 1902!) and a 21-gun salute

Cromer

in front of some army barracks. The local residents had been told to protect their windows from being shattered by the noise! Phyllida went on to describe the successive coronations of George V, George VI and Elizabeth II. On each occasion there were in Norfolk many special events and much marketing of memorabilia. Phyllida concluded with a mention of the coronation of Charles III and she was thanked for her very wellresearched talk. On November 7, Val Saunders will speak to us about ‘A history of St John Ambulance’. Visit website www.candsprobus.club.

For further advice on making a will, contact James Palmer on 01263 825959 or email james.palmer@hayes-storr.com.

by James Palmer Associate Solicitor Hayes + Storr

Should I make my will with a solicitor? There have long been discussions as to why you might make a will with a solicitor rather than choosing the cheaper homemade option. The subject has hit the news again recently, with Aretha Franklin’s handwritten wishes being found in her sofa. As with the estate of the Queen of Soul, homemade wills can often result in issues and costly legal proceedings. Such important legal documents benefit from professional advice. When I prepare a will for a client, my primary aim is to ensure clarity. That may be clearly stating who will oversee the administration of your estate or how your assets shall be distributed. Homemade wills often lack such clarity, which can cause time-consuming and costly complications – or the document being invalid. A phrase I often hear when I discuss wills with clients is, “Oh, I never thought of

that”. That may relate to what might happen with the balance of their estate, once they set out specific items they wish people to receive. Alternatively, it could be in relation to what happens if their chosen beneficiaries die before them. By making your will with a legal professional, you put yourself in a better position to ensure your estate is dealt with as you wish. It also allows you to explore and consider scenarios you may not have thought of, with advice tailored to your specific circumstances, including the size of your estate relating to Inheritance Tax. Another common issue with a homemade will is that if a will is not executed properly, the wishes contained in it will be invalid and not legally binding. This could result in a previous will coming into effect, or passing in accordance with the intestacy rules. This can often lead to estates not passing to the intended beneficiaries

and complications as to who is entitled to administer the estate. Issues can also arise relating to capacity to execute the document or, indeed, undue influence. This can often result in costly legal proceedings and significant delays. As legal professionals, we owe a duty to all our clients to ensure they have the requisite capacity to put a will in place, and that we are receiving their true wishes. As shown with Aretha Franklin, issues can also arise as to where a will might be kept. When we make a will, we store the document in our secure strongroom free of charge, ensuring it is not at risk of being lost down the back of the sofa. A will is one of the most important legal documents an individual can make. Such an important document warrants being prepared by an experienced professional who you can trust to ensure your wishes are carried out accurately and unequivocally.

A magnificent milestone Cromer Ladies Lifeboat Guild & Supporters celebrated a magnificent half-century which has seen them raise over £350,000 to help save lives at sea. The 50th anniversary milestone was marked with a special afternoon tea in the Cliftonville Hotel Ballroom. Current and previous members attended including two of the founding committee members Shay Nash and Barbara Mayes. Chairman Beryl Mansell and vicepresident Peggy Webster addressed the group, congratulating members on a successful 50 years of fund-raising for Cromer RNLI and thanking everyone for their continued support. It was calculated that the Guild has raised in excess of £350,000 over the last 50 years - an amazing amount! Flowers were presented to Shay, Barbara and Peggy and pens were presented to the current committee members. Following the tea, a celebration cake was enjoyed while the group were entertained by the Pot of Gold Shanty Crew. CLLG&S is a thriving group, centred around friendship and fun, while helping to raise funds to save lives at sea. It gives members a rewarding sense of

Poppy Appeal organiser seeks support

OLD AND NEW: Two types of poppy.

The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal’s Cromer & District organiser David Pritchard needs a helping hand. “As I start to prepare for this year’s appeal, I am looking for volunteers who can spare some time, from as little as an hour to collect in the supermarkets in Cromer,” he said. This year, the Poppy Appeal runs from Thursday, October 26 to Remembrance Sunday on November 12. Anyone buying a poppy may notice a difference iwith the introduction of a fully recyclable one. In line with the commitment of the Royal

British Legion to reduce single-use plastic and to have less of an impact on the environment, poppies will be made entirely from paper which can be easily recycled. The new poppy will be available alongside remaining stocks of the current poppy. Again, wreaths will be available to order from David. Sufficient stock is held locally for the appeal and for funerals of ex-service personnel but to ensure delivery, please order as soon as possible. Anyone wanting to volunteer or place an order for a wreath(s), can contact David on 01263 511270 or cromerpao@gmail.com

Joy for Cathy, 71, as first novel published Proud pensioner Cathy Turner has fulfilled a longheld ambition by publishing her first novel at the age of 71. A former professional musician and yoga teacher, Cathy began writing a book over 30 years ago. But work and family commitments forced her to abandon the project. The lockdown of 2020 relit the creative spark and with time on her hands, the words began to flow again. Once she had started she could not stop. “In that time of enforced isolation, I decided to cheer myself up by writing something positive and uplifting,” said Cathy, who lives in Erpingham. The result is Counterpoint - a recently-published novel set in north Norfolk, especially Sheringham and Cromer. “Getting something published so late in life is fulfilling,” said Cathy. “Instead of putting my feet up and giving in to being ‘over the hill’ after retirement I feel as though I’m still going somewhere and have something to offer the world.” Cathy describes Counterpoint as a love story involving a well-known classical musical conductor and his mother’s carer, with elements of psychological drama. “Many relationships break down these days and I wanted to bring out the idea that some do succeed! The news was so bad in the lockdowns it helped me personally to dwell on something positive. “I chose to set Counterpoint locally because I love north Norfolk and it’s the area I know best. Parts of the book are also set in London where I attended college,” added Cathy, who uses the pen name Kate Wyburn. After leaving school, Cathy attended the Royal College of Music for two years and then played the oboe in theatre orchestras and a wind quintet. While raising her two children, she taught oboe for a few years. She taught yoga in Derbyshire and was a book-keeper before retiring, aged 66.

MY WORD: Cathy Turner with Counterpoint her first novel, conceived during lockdown. “My ambition to write a book began in the early 1990s when I was about 40. I realised that writing essays for the yoga teaching qualification (British Wheel of Yoga) was very enjoyable - I just felt ‘on my beam’ when I was writing and tended to lose track of time. “I am now writing a sequel to Counterpoint set in 2038, in which the children are teenagers, growing up in a very different world and challenging their parents’ old way of life.” Counterpoint, published by Pegasus Elliot Mackenzie Ltd, can be obtained by ordering through a bookshop or online from any major site dealing in books. It is available on Amazon (£8.08 paperback).

Parks’ winning ways with wildlife AN East Runton caravan and camping holiday park has won recognition for its conservation efforts. Woodhill Park has earned A Special Species award as part of the David Bellamy Blooming Marvellous Pledge for Nature scheme. The plaudit marks Woodhill Park’s promise to support skylarks, which can be found in and around the grounds. The team at Woodhill’s sister park at Kelling Heath, Holt, won Super Signage and Home Sweet Home awards for commitment to supporting and conserving their unique natural environments. Managed by the British Holiday and Home

Cromer

Parks Association, the awards follow the David Bellamy Conservation Award Scheme, which has encouraged holiday parks to make greener choices for more than 25 years and now focuses on wildlife conservation. In the last 18 months the teams at both parks took on challenges to be considered for the awards. At Kelling Heath they provided new environmental information and interpretation signs to help guests understand the wildlife and environments, and installed wildlife boxes, including nesting boxes, bat boxes and a new home for the park’s resident red squirrel breeding programme.

Hi Sarah,

Roughton’s St Mary’s Primary School has a fresh new look after volunteers pulled together for a summer spruce-up. A clean down of all outside areas, pressure washing, scrubbing, sweeping and weeding was followed by painting in colours to blend in with other buildings and the woodland surroundings. The schools’ classrooms are all named after woodland trees and areas near each class had appropriate artwork done. Opposite the reception area a woodlandthemed mural of various animals was created. The Friends of St Marys Primary School, who spearheaded the make-over, thanked Jewson, Cromer, for supplying the paint, Lucianne Heath for the artwork and all the people that gave up their weekends and weekdays to help. Mrs Laura Watts, executive head-teacher, said: “The children and staff were amazed to see the school buildings when we came back. “Everything looks so fresh and clean, and we are grateful to parents and friends who are so generous with their time.”
