Hello! Autumn is a great time for a walk, and the youngsters at Langley Pre-Prep and Prep School combined their stroll through the leaves with a chance to help others with a sponsored event. That’s some of them on the front cover, and you can find out more about what they got up to on page 7. New developments aren’t always everyone’s cup of tea, but when they are done right they can really enhance an area. Three developments in Taverham and Drayton have won commendations in a design awards competition – one for combining ancient and modern in a positive way. Turn to page 19 to see which ones were chosen. And talking of awards... nominations are now open for the Broadland District Council Business Awards. Make sure you nominate your favourites so they can be in with a chance of some well-deserved praise. Find out how on page 4. Something which very much divides the area is the proposed Western Link Road, which would connect the NDR to the A47. There has been a government announcement about funding for it, and you can read the full story on page 18. Please keep your stories and pictures coming in – we do have one more edition before Christmas so I’d love to hear about your events. I hope you enjoy this edition of the magazine, and I will see you next month.

TAVERHAM HISTORY SOCIETY

Stepping out! A sponsored walk by pupils at Langley PrePrep and Prep School has raised money to help fight a cancer which affects children in particular. All the pupils – aged from three to 13 – and staff at the Taverham school walked, skipped and ran 1km around the grounds in aid of Sarcoma UK. They hoped to raise £500 but think they may have raised more than that. Roger Outwin-Flinders, head of prep at Langley, said: “We are always proud to support good causes – both locally and nationally. This year, the Crows House has chosen to support Sarcoma UK and they

organised the sponsored walk involving the children and staff.” Richard Davidson, chief executive at Sarcoma UK, said: “Our charity relies solely on voluntary donations and the efforts of our fundraisers and supporters, so we are delighted that the children and staff decided to help us help those who are affected by sarcoma.” Sarcomas are the third most common cancer in children, making up 11pc of all cancers in children in the UK, and a child is diagnosed nearly every other day. The charity funds research, offers support, and campaigns for better treatments.

Using treasured items selected from the local private museum of Robin Grand, we have created room settings, displays and artifacts for everyone to learn, appreciate and, in some cases, possibly reminisce – but most of all to enjoy – the 1940s. Love The 40s will be held on Wednesday, November 15, in the village hall and costs £2.50 on the door at 7.30pm. The entrance fee includes your ration book containing a raffle ticket for a chance to win a superb prize reflecting items of the period. In the background you will hear popular music of the time while you sample life in the 1940s with the style of food and drink the decade had to offer in the NAAFI tea shop. You may also wish to try on period clothing or create and come wearing something you prepared earlier. t At the AGM, the chairman reported that we have been more fortunate through 2022/23 with our attendance income recovering and expenses kept slightly lower than last year. The current management committee and officers were voted to remain for another term and there were no issues raised. t A talk given by Mary Fewster on Christmas Past in October captivated the audience. t If you have a question about the society you are welcome to email taverhamhistorysociety@yahoo.com Bill Warnes Chairman

TAVERHAM AND THORPE MARRIOTT GUIDES

Building, budgets and tasty treats Since returning in September, our Guide unit has planned for this coming term. Guides are encouraged to plan their meeting activities by discussing in their patrols and then sharing with the whole unit. We held a board games night and they were encouraged to bring along games from home that their families play. For our second week, we held a budget builder night, when the girls had to build a high tower from various sized boxes and with varying amounts of materials. They needed to budget what they spent and were penalised if they went over budget or rewarded for keeping under budget. A life skill they will cherish, I am sure! We then started on a pizza challenge, and the Guides have enjoyed a pizza instruction night and a pizza games night. We will finish with the Guides making a pizza from start to finish, which we hope will arrive home in one piece to be baked and eaten. We continue this half term with a

So much more can be recycled Broadland District Council marked Recycle Week last month with The Big Recycling Hunt, and praised local residents for their efforts in recycling. The event aimed to tell people some of the surprising things that can be recycled but which usually end up in the bin. These include empty aerosols, plastic cleaning-product bottles, plastic toiletry bottles, plastic pots and tubs, and food tins. Jan Davis, cabinet member for the environment, said: “We have the best recycling rates in the county, so our residents are getting it right! “However, we can always do better.” And with more people recycling, she said the time was right to shine the spotlight on all the items which don’t need to be thrown out. Last year, Broadland residents recycled 10,000 tonnes of waste, plus 50 tonnes of electrical equipment, 40 tonnes of textiles and seven tonnes of batteries. Residents are being reminded that most takeaway trays or punnets are also

recyclable, as are butter and ice cream tubs, yogurt pots and fruit-and-veg trays. For more on what can and cannot be recycled, you can visit www. southnorfolkandbroadland.gov.uk/recycling/ goes-recycling-bin

We will be holding our popular Christmas Craft and Gift Fair on Saturday, November 18, from 10am until 3pm. It will be a great opportunity to find that elusive gift you have been looking for amongst the huge variety of stalls – or just relax with friends and neighbours with a coffee and a freshly baked Greggs sausage roll. All funds raised will go towards the refurbishment of the main sports hall and redecoration throughout all areas where the old heating was removed. With the entire hall looking fantastic, now is the time to consider booking that new activity or private event before your preferred slot is snapped up. Contact secretary Larraine Russell on 01603 869316 or you can email taverhamvillagehall@yahoo.co.uk to find out more. You can also help our fundraising by supporting us for £1 per week by signing up to the Taverham Village Hall Community at Heart Lottery, with a chance to win several cash prizes and the jackpot of £25,000. Churchyard tidy will clear graves Residents with loved ones buried in St Margaret’s Church graveyard are being told that “excess items” on graves will be removed early next year. The parochial church council is responsible for maintaining the churchyard and making sure that the rules are followed – including making sure that only one container of flowers is placed on each grave or memorial. In recent months, the volunteers have found it increasingly difficult to maintain the grass areas in the churchyard, particularly in the Garden of Remembrance, due to the number of items placed on and around graves and memorial tablets. The council proposes to begin removing all excess items from January 1. These will be placed in the porch with names attached so that relatives can collect them when next visiting. They will be retained for three months and any uncollected items will then be removed on April 1. A full copy of the regulations is in the glass-fronted cabinet in the porch together

A Thorpe Marriott judo club is hoping to attract some new members to go along to try out the sport. Renkeido Judo Kwai is based in Thorpe Marriott Village Hall and organisers are keen to spread the word to anyone looking for a new hobby. Based on technique and competition, the sport offers the opportunity to train to a high standard and the club has Level-2 trained Dan-grade coaches. A club spokesman said: “Taking part in this sport brings ethics and control of each individual and educates them to a very high standard.” Classes are held every Wednesday from 6.30pm until 7.30pm for five to 16-yearolds, and from 7.30pm until 8.30pm for over-16s. They cost £4 a week or £12 a month and the club is offering a two-week trial to see if you like it.

Lottery raises £100,000 Broadland District Council’s Community at Heart Lottery has passed the milestone of raising more than £100,000 for the local community – and groups local to Drayton and Taverham are among those who have benefited. This money has been paid directly to a wide variety of good causes across the district since the lottery's first draw in 2021 – some 88 non-profit groups who have been supported by local people buying tickets. Natasha Harpley, cabinet member for communities and housing and deputy leader of the council, said: “I am delighted with the success of our Community at Heart Lottery over the past two-and-a-half years and it's absolutely amazing to see the lottery making such a difference to Broadland residents. “The funds raised have helped local good causes to deliver their services and have proven to be vital to many – especially during the pandemic and the ongoing costof-living crisis. “I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to all of our supporters in helping to reach this funding milestone.” A grand total of £112,605 has been raised for good causes to date – including Taverham Band. The band’s Jim Hamshaw said: “During the pandemic, the band was effectively mothballed for almost two years. The lottery has helped greatly in the short term by way of ‘keeping the lights on’ as far as continuing outgoings were concerned when

Giving Tree spreads festive joy and love of reading As thoughts turn to Christmas, Norfolk County Council children’s services and Waterstones have teamed up again to launch the 2023 Giving Tree appeal. Now in its 17th year, the appeal asks people to buy a book for a child in care, spreading joy and the love of reading. Last year more than 1,000 books were bought across the county after people took a tag from a tree in the store’s Castle Street

branch and turned a child’s wish into reality. The tree is decorated with hundreds of tags which each represent a child and the book they would like to receive for Christmas. There are requests from more than 800 Norfolk children in care, with some specifying titles or authors and others seeking a certain type of book. Purchases can also be made online. Books need to be bought by December 3

and staff will make sure they are wrapped and delivered for Christmas. Penny Carpenter, cabinet member for children’s services, said: “The Giving Tree is such a wonderful idea and gives children of all ages who are less fortunate the joy of reading. Norfolk County Council believes that every child deserves to experience the hope and excitement of Christmas morning by opening a special gift.”

TAVERHAM & DISTRICT LIONS At the moment, it’s all about the forthcoming visit of our bearded friend and his helpers from the North Pole. He has been visiting Taverham and District since 1986 – this is his 37th year – so we think he just about knows his way! He will be starting his rounds at 5.30pm each evening Monday to Friday starting on Friday, December 1, up until Friday, December 22 – weather permitting. Should his sleigh not be able to get through, Advance notice will be put on our website. There will also be a message on Facebook with a link to the website so you will be able to see the routes he is taking each night and you can plan accordingly. Tesco in Drayton have very generously donated 20 tubs of sweeties for the little ones and we are very grateful for their support. Father Christmas will be outside Tesco on Saturday, December 16, and Sunday, December 17, between 10am and 2pm to say hello to children old and young! If you have a story for us, email editor@justregional.co.uk If you know someone who is going the extra mile for others, there is an issue you feel should be highlighted or a group or sports team which is flying high (or in need of new members or helpers)... let us know!

Hotel could be turned into homes An award-winning hotel and wedding venue in Drayton could be converted into housing. A planning application has been sent to Broadland District Council, asking for permission to turn Stower Grange Hotel into three homes. The application comes following the owner’s concerns that the business, which is also a restaurant, may be “unsustainable” and that he was planning to retire. The property, which was built in the 1600s and was used as a rectory, has been on the market since 2021. A planning statement submitted to the council said: “Due to an uncertain and potentially unsustainable future as a hotel, further accelerated by the impact of the recent pandemic, the client and owner of Stower Grange Hotel has reluctantly explored the more viable use.” A pre-application was made recently to assess the viability and was considered acceptable by the council. The planning proposal went on: “The conversion will continue to respect the existing listed building and landscape

NEW PLANS: Stower Grange could be converted back to residential use if plans are approved. with minimal alterations throughout to preserve the existing access, views and internal layouts... This natural conversion to keep the existing building preserved ... [will ensure] a continuity of building use and appearance to preserve the existing architecture that will be largely indistinguishable from the current building.” The plan will be considered by the council’s planning committee in due course.

Mixed reaction to link-road pledge The government’s approval of the outline business case for the Norwich Western Link (NWL) road has been greeted with mixed responses. The government confirmed that it would contribute 85pc – £213m of the current estimated £251m bill – to the scheme, and Broadland MP Jerome Mayhew said he was delighted with the news. He said it would bring much-needed investment into Norfolk, reduce journey times for motorists and emergency services and cut down on rat-running through villages including Drayton and Taverham. The controversial 3.9-mile road will link the Broadland Northway (the NDR) to the A47, completing an obital route around Norwich. Jerome said: “I am delighted that we have secured this much-needed government investment for Broadland and Norfolk. “This investment of government funds is as much a vote of confidence in the commercial future of Norfolk as it is a support for today’s communities.” But opposition campaigners are less

happy with the news. Eliot Lyne, Norfolk Wildlife Trust CEO, said: “The decision is terrible news for Norfolk’s wildlife... In addition to the destruction of a well-connected network of vital wildlife habitats including ancient woods and trees, grasslands, chalk streams and floodplain, there is mounting and detailed long-term scientific evidence that the road will irreparably harm the UK’s largest population of rare and legally protected barbastelle bats. “In a planning application, the council will have to show evidence of mitigation for the damaging impacts on this nationally important population, particularly given the well-documented failure of such mitigation on the NDR. No such evidence has been provided by the council to date.” He said it would be impossible to provide such mitigation and added: “If the road goes ahead to planning, huge sums of public money are likely to be further wasted on a project that is not likely to ever obtain planning consent.”

hand-built on ash frames, it was not suitable for large-scale assembly line production and most were convertibles – beautifully streamlined and expensive, being

associated as sports cars for sportsmen. John bought a very dilapidated 1939 green saloon, a Speed 25 which was an ex-Flying Squad police car. The body was stripped off, a new ash frame built and aluminium bodywork fitted to replicate the 4.3 Vanden Plas Drophead Coupé. It was a beautiful car (pictured) which John loved and took to many rallies but which he had to sell to provide a new roof for the hotel he and his wife were developing. t Any retired professionals or businessmen wishing to know more can contact Graham Abel on 07825 444224.

THE VALE PROBUS CLUB The club met at Wensum Valley Hotel for its October meeting and welcomed two new guests. Unfortunately, the speaker who was going to give a talk on The Shipping Forecast found his wife had covid so offered his apologies. Into the void stepped John Flowerdew once again to give us an intriguing talk and illustrations on The Evolution of the Alvis. John’s enthusiasm for the Alvis brand was obvious when he told us of its history and evolution from 1920 to 1967. The car was hand-built in Coventry and taken over by first Rover and then British Leyland. Being

PRAISED: Developments on Taverham Park Avenue and Woodland Drive have been awarded high commendations.

Designed to be winners! Three developments in Drayton and Taverham scooped prizes and recommendations in this year’s Broadland District Council Design and Enhancement Awards. The Lodge in Drayton took first prize in the enhancement category, and high commendations were awarded to houses on Taverham Park Avenue and Woodland Drive, Drayton. The Taverham Park Development was built by Fleur Homes and designed by Hudson Architects. The Woodland Drive development was built by Beauchamp Homes and designed by A Squared Architects. The new Broadland Gate police station took the top spot in the design category. Caroline Karimi-Ghovanlou, the awards panel chairman, said: “These awards give us the opportunity to celebrate the local expertise, hard work and vision involved in creating and restoring beautiful and functional buildings that enhance our district and protect its special character. “As always, we received some fantastic entries of exceptional quality. We were so impressed with the attention to detail and the carbon-cutting design of the new police station, and The Lodge just wowed us with

WINNER: The development of The Lodge won the enhancement category. It was praised for the way it also helped the preservation of the original building (below). its transformation that was so sympathetic to the character of the existing building – both very worthy winners.” The Lodge was converted by developers Hidden Talent Homes. A significant local building built in 1914, it has been transformed into eight homes – five apartments and three townhouses. The conversion of the manor house also enabled the preservation works on the ruins of the original 15th century lodge in the grounds, removing it from the Buildings at Risk Register.

Generous diners raise £22,000 This year’s Moveable Feast – a dining event where people move between restaurants for a three-course meal – has raised more than £22,000 for Parkinson’s UK. The event, which is held in Norwich each year, was started by former councillor and restaurateur Lloyd Addison in 1999. He lived with Parkinson’s for nearly 20 years and felt passionate about supporting Norwich and Norfolk’s culinary heritage whilst raising vital research funds. Now run by a committee led by his widow, Cynthia, 637 diners and 11 restaurants took part this year. The Coach and Horses on Bethel Street was crowned the winning restaurant for the second year running. Beth Condie, regional fundraiser at Parkinson’s UK, said: “Moveable Feast has become such an important part of the local community, celebrating fantastic independent restaurants whilst raising such vital funds for Parkinson's research. “Every year we're overwhelmed with the support we receive and how fast the tickets

sell out, and it's all down to Lloyd’s vision some 20 years ago!” t Tickets sell out quickly as it attracts people from all over Norfolk and beyond, so to register your interest in Moveable Feast 2024, visit events.parkinsons.org. uk/event/moveable-feast/home t To find out more about Parkinson’s UK, visit www.parkinsons.org.uk
