Hello! I’m feeling very autumnal at the moment – and I hope our cover of autumn shots will make you feel the same. Aren’t they lovely? Photographer Simon Hastings sent them to me so I think maybe it’s his favourite season, too. We’ve got some lovey heartwarming stories in this edition, starting on page 3 with one of our residents having a cup of tea and a few biscuits with a very special party host... And on page 13 we meet a family whose son’s heart was donated to give someone else the chance of life – perhaps the most wonderful gift that can be given. Sprowston folk always do a lot for charity and some of the most popular events are held at The Brickmakers pub, which has totted up this year’s total on page 19. And our local charity Dawn’s New Horizon has a new home (pictured), moving in to new premises in the town where it can do even more to help those affected by domestic violence. Turn to page 9 to find out more. Keep your stories and photos coming in. I hope you enjoy this month’s edition and I will see you next month.

Ray enjoys a royal cuppa Second World War veteran Ray Harke was delighted to be invited by the RAF for tea with the King to mark the 80th anniversary of the Dambusters Raid. The monarch met 18 former pilots and air crew after looking round the hangar at RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire. And Ray, who lives at The Warren care home, was one of them. The King told them: “Thank God for all these men – people like you who looked after us.” Ray was absolutely delighted to be a part of the occasion and enjoyed sitting next to the King and sharing memories. He said: “His Majesty was thoroughly charming and a delight to chat with.” Elizabeth Tacliad, general manager at the home, said: “Ray was absolutely delighted to meet the King and will cherish the moment. It was wonderful to see how happy Ray was – and the staff and residents loved hearing all about it.”

A REGAL BREW: Ray Harke enjoys a cup of tea with the King.

Blue is the colour of caring People are being urged to Do Blue on World Mental Health Day next month to raise funds for vital services run by the charity Norfolk and Waveney Mind. Whether it’s by wearing blue clothing, dyeing your hair blue or lighting up a building blue for the day, showing your support on Tuesday, October 10, will help the charity ensure that no one in our region has to face poor mental health alone. Last year lots of the county’s prominent buildings were illuminated and businesses, councils, schools and nurseries and hundreds of individuals turned the region into a sea of blue to highlight the importance of tackling the growing problem of poor mental health. This year, with services coming under increasing pressure, the local mental health charity is asking for more support to fund its work – from prevention to crisis intervention. Pete Boczko, chief executive officer of Norfolk and Waveney Mind, said: “We would love it if even more people and businesses could help us light up our region blue this World Mental Health Day to raise awareness and vital funds to support our work right here in Norfolk and Waveney. We want to build on last year’s success and keep people talking about this hugely important issue.

New Horizon – new home A domestic violence charity has moved into new premises in Sprowston, meaning it can increase the support it can provide. Dawn’s New Horizon has now settled into its base on Corbet Avenue, and CEO Dame Lorraine Curston said she was delighted with the move. “It’s so much bigger and we will be able to see clients in private in our own counselling room, which is what we have always wanted to do,” she said. “And we can operate and provide lots of services on behalf of our charity.” These include counselling and coaching, providing haircuts and makeovers for new clients who have fled domestic abuse, the provision of household items for people setting up a new home and accompanying people to see police, doctors and solicitors. And, of course, there is a shop with lots of clothes and gift ideas. The new building allows more space for the drop-in service and also for the food parcels which are put together and sent out to whoever needs tham. “We were supported by companies offering free services, which has made such a difference,” said Lorraine. The charity was based on Cannerby Lane for 11 years. It was set up to support the community

and survivors of domestic abuse. Over the years more than 1,000 people have been helped by the charity and Lorraine hopes the team will be able to help even more from the new shop. “A huge thank-you to all who support us. Without you all we couldn’t do what we do. “We hope to be able to provide more services soon, when we are all set up and settled down once again,” she added.

Praise for animal welfare Broadland District Council has had its work in animal welfare recognised with an award from the RSPCA for the fourth year. With Breckland, North Norfolk, Norwich City and South Norfolk councils also winning gold Paw Print awards for stray dog services, the county is flying the flag for animal welfare. Running since 2008, this flagship scheme is the only one of its kind, recognising local authorities and public bodies for going above and beyond to deliver world-class services. Broadland’s deputy leader Natasha Harpley said: “We are really proud to be one of only 14 councils across the whole of the UK to have achieved Gold status. “Our teams go above and beyond to protect local animals and support owners to make the right choices, so we are delighted to have been recognised for the fourth year in a row.” Over the past 15 years, more than 1,500 awards have been given out for services ranging from initiatives to get more stray dogs safely into kennels and schemes to safeguard pets whose owners have been taken into care, to housing policies that allow pets to stay with tenants living in rented homes.

SO PROUD: Mike Gardiner from Animal Warden Services and a furry friend with the Paw Print award. Lee Gingell, public affairs manager for local government at the RSPCA, said: “The Paw Prints awards are something the RSPCA is immensely proud of. “Local authorities, housing providers, contingency planners and others play a huge role in the delivery of animal welfare,

many of them doing incredible work in the face of steep challenges. “Often this pioneering work is done quietly behind the scenes and remains unsung, but they really deserve to be applauded for changing the lives of not only animals but local people, too.”

WILLS AND PROBATE SOLICITORS Not For Profit Law is a social enterprise founded by two local solicitors, Laura van Ree and Trina Worden, who have more than 30 years’ experience between them. Laura and Trina have resolved to ‘do law differently’ by offering expert legal advice at lower rates than more traditional law firms whilst feeding the profits they make back into the local community. Laura and Trina advise on Wills, Powers of Attorney, the Court of Protection, Probate and Estate Administration and Trusts. They offer free initial probate advice and a free Will review service and are always happy to chat on the phone before you decide to become a client.

NEWS FROM YOUR LIBRARIES

Library celebrates black culture and going green October is Black History Month and the library will again be celebrating the culture and histories of our black communities. This year’s theme is Saluting Our Sisters and highlights the crucial role that black women have played in shaping history, inspiring change and building communities. Sprowston library will have a display celebrating black British women, so come in and browse or borrow books from the display. Libraries Week This annual event runs from October 2 to October 8 and is organised by CILIP. It is an annual celebration of the best that libraries have to offer. This year’s theme is Go Green at the Library and hopes to promote and celebrate the work focused on sustainability and climate change. For example, you could encourage friends and family

to get a library card so they can borrow rather than buy. Borrowing books from your local library is the ultimate in sustainability – saving yourself money and shelf-space and being kinder to the planet. Once you’ve read and returned the books, they can be borrowed by someone else. Need some tips on how to waste less and reuse more? Had enough of fast fashion? Perhaps you’re just starting out on growing your own... All libraries have books which offer plenty of suggestions on how to go a little (or a lot!) greener. Some of the titles will be on display during the week. You can browse the collection on the Libby App norfolk.overdrive. com/collection/1482471 And all libraries offer Tricky Period packs, which now include reusable and sustainable sanitary products.

Love is where the heart is The touching moment a mum hears her son’s heart beating three years after his death has been captured in a film released to mark Organ Donor Week. Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals released the film of the meeting between the man who was given a new chance of life and the family of the man who gave him that gift. Norfolk businessman Kitt Blake, who was 30, gave four people the chance of life when he died, with his heart going to Tim Head, a 64-year-old Nottingham man. Tim was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy and was ill for five years – including an eight-month hospital stay before the transplant in the spring of 2020. The poignant event was captured on film as the two families wanted to share their experiences to encourage more people to donate their organs. Tim said he had always known the two families would meet up one day, saying it had been a day he would never forget. “My first anniversary was their first anniversary and I just felt like I had to write to them to thank them. Even from day one, I had this feeling we’d meet up one day. I just knew it. “There were a lot of emotions leading up to today. We just want them to know that we do really appreciate it every single day.” Kitt’s mum, Jane, listened to his heart beating in Tim’s chest – an emotional moment for everyone concerned. “Jane listening to my heart was very emotional and I’m glad she listened,” said Tim. “Everyone is at ease now.” Jane said: “It meant a lot to meet Tim today. “He sent us a letter about a year after the organ donation and we were really happy to know that he was so well. He said it would be lovely to meet up when the time was right and I knew I wanted to. “To see that he’s happy, well and enjoying his life together with his family was marvellous and something that they may not otherwise have had. They’re a lovely family and, deep down, I think I knew they would be. “When Kitt was in hospital and we were asked about organ donation, my heart sank. I didn’t know what to say at first. “However, Kitt was someone who always helped others, so we knew it was the right thing. We had to think quickly, but I’m glad we made the right decision.” The transplant took place at Royal Papworth Hospital in Cambridge, the biggest adult cardiothoracic transplant centre in the country, which performs approximately 90 heart, lung and heart-lung

Recipient transplant co-ordinator Monika Krupa said: “It was an honour to be present for this first meeting between the two families. It was an emotional experience for everyone involved and marks the next stage for Tim in his transplant story. “In our role we’re very privileged to be part of the lives of our recipients and we become like a second family to them, supporting them closely at every step of their incredible journeys.” Natalie Ashley, the NNUH specialist nurse for organ donation, said: “Huge thanks to Tim for allowing this incredibly emotional moment which meant such a lot to Kitt’s family. “I really believe the meeting has been of huge benefit to both families, who have now definitely formed a bond for life. Such meetings don’t happen often, but when they do it is hugely powerful.”

While people now have to actively opt out of the donation register if they don’t want their organs to be donated, they are being urged to discuss their wishes with their families to make these difficult decisions a little easier. One donor can save up to nine lives – and even more if they also donate tissue. There are more than 7,000 people currently waiting for an organ transplant in the UK, with 1,400 people donating each year. And during Organ Donor Week, it is hoped that at least 25,000 people will confirm that they are happy to be donors. Each year, hundreds of opportunities for transplants are missed because families just aren’t sure what to do or what their loved ones wanted to happen, so donors are asked to make their wishes known. t You can watch the video of the families’ meeting, which was shot by Keiron Tovell, at www.youtube.com/ watch?v=YYH-NQ4czn0 t Visit www.organdonation.nhs.uk to find out more about donation and to register your wishes.

Taking a young approach A new series of free online courses has been launched aimed at helping young people with their mental health. Discovery College, an offshoot of Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust’s Recovery College, is now providing educational courses and webinars on mental health and recovery – topics which have been carefully adapted to be accessible and applicable to younger people. Peer tutors and learning support advisers will also be younger to provide role-models of hope and recovery. The first webinar of this year’s series, Welcome to Discovery College, was earlier this month and can be accessed on YouTube by searching for Welcome to the Discovery College. Young service-users are being asked to join focus groups to help shape the college’s 2024 timetable and to help attract young people to get involved as attendees and as tutors and advisers. Hope Gunn, Recovery College practitioner tutor, said: “This new range of support will provide a space for young people to feel safe, heard and empowered and we would love to involve them in planning next year’s courses.”

HELP ON THE WEB: A new series of online courses has been launched to help young people deal with any mental health problems. Courses and webinars are open to anyone aged from 16 to 25 in Norfolk and Suffolk – not just those receiving NSFT services. You can attend as many courses and as many times as you wish, with no need for a professional referral. Sessions for the rest of the year include an Understanding and Managing Anxiety course and webinar, and an Understanding and Exploring Identity course. The webinar is a light touch on what anxiety is and offers self-management strategies. The two-session course delves

deeper and offers the opportunity to share experience or views through group discussion. Understanding and Exploring Identity allows students to think about how mental health and their identities are linked, and there is also a Guide to Living Your Best Life, which aims to guide students to explore the life they are looking to build. t To register interest in a focus group visit nsft.uk/discoveryfocus t To sign up for the courses/webinars go to nsft.uk/discoverysignup

Scheme will help with price of solar panels Broadland District Council is offering residents the chance to be part of a scheme to help make it easier to buy solar panels for generating energy. The council, along with others in Norfolk, has partnered with bulk-buying specialist iChoosr to set up Solar Together Norfolk – a group-buying scheme where the more people and businesses who join, the better the price should be. You can register online – for free and without any obligation – via www. solartogether.co.uk/broadland by October 27.

Bag a sale pitch There will be an indoor car boot sale at Hellesdon High School, on Middletons Lane, on Saturday, October 14. The event will run from 10am until noon and there will be refreshments available. Pitches cost £7 or £9 (with use of a school table) and advance booking is required. t To book, email pta@hellesdonhigh. norfolk.sch.uk

RAAC not found in council’s schools Norfolk County Council has released a statement regarding the use of reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) in the county’s schools. Over the last few years officers have been working to identify if it had been used in the buildings, and having surveyed all 83 schools under the council’s control, structural engineers said there were “no concerns”. Penny Carpenter, cabinet member for children's services said: “We were made aware of this issue in 2018 and proactively worked with all of the county council’s maintained schools to identify if RAAC was present and if there were any problems. Structural engineers from NPS carried out surveys of 83 buildings and found no concerns. “As you would expect, we are keeping up to date with the changes and updates in Department for Education guidance and other information on RAAC as it comes through, in case any additional assessment is required to ensure the health and safety of pupils.” She added that most schools in the

county were now academies, which are independent of council control and are responsible for their own buildings. “We have contacted academies three times since 2018 to flag the potential issues with RAAC and reminded them to complete the DfE’s survey in June this year,” she said. One academy, in Shipdham, reported back this month to say RAAC had been found in the hall. “We are awaiting further results from a number of other academy schools and the schools will inform parents and staff if any issues are found,” Penny added. “We are, as always, ready to assist. “I would encourage parents to speak to their schools if they have any concerns. I look forward to receiving further details about how the government intends to deal with the issue of RAAC in schools.” RAAC was used in the building of schools, hospitals and other public buildings from the 1950s to the 1990s. It has a lifespan of around 30 years and concerns have been raised that it weakens over time and the buildings are at risk of collapsing if measures are not taken.

Looking for after-school inspiration? Are you looking for a little after school inspiration? ISABEL STUBBS, of Inspiring Imaginations, has a few ideas So reached the end of September and you and your little ones have settled into the school routine. Mornings are working – well, most of the time – and bedtimes are bearable, but are you needing a few more ideas for that after-school period, just after they have had a snack and relaxed with a bit of TV before dinner? Getting outside is always good for us and by taking the fun outdoors it also keeps the mess outside! Painting boxes Children enjoy the process of painting, and a few paints and random boxes from the recycling is an easy win. Combine water play with potion making Gather a few natural items from the garden

(an activity in itself), add a little water, jugs and bowls, and watch the mixtures being created. Ice play Freeze different objects – dinosaurs, Lego figures, shells – in ice trays and containers

and you have a whole variety of play invitations. It’s also a great recycling idea for any withering flower heads from a bunch of flowers or bouquets you may have received. Sand play This enables another range of play opportunities to keep your little ones engaged. Add stones and shells, cars and trucks, jugs and cups – and dinosaurs are always a favourite. Slime! Usually a big hit with the littlies! Again, add different items and when you feel it needs changing, add a little water. It is always useful to share a few play ideas to keep everyone inspired. t Now Isabel is enjoying her retirement from Cecil Gowing School, she is having lots of fun as a grandparent and adding ideas to her Facebook and Instagram posts.

Charity starts at the Brickies The Brickmakers pub has had a busy year with several charity events netting cash for some good causes. And landlady Claire Brooks said she was grateful to everyone, locals and visitors, for their help in making things such a success. “We’ve just had another great event here with our Bike Show. The car park front and back was full, and the garden, too!” she said. “It’s amazing. We’ve been here only eight months and we’ve raised nearly £15,000 for charity. “We have such lovely customers plus the bands and the promoters that have helped us achieve this. “As well as our usual events we’re looking forward to our next all-day event – Pork Fest 2, on Saturday, October 7.” Amounts raised so far at the pub this year include: Easter Charity Day It’s On the Ball Testicular Cancer £1,265 Keeping Abreast £1,265

Diabetes Punk Weekend £675 Bike Show National Association for Bikers with Disabilities £325 Kayla’s Appeal £1,300

A poet for all occasions Sprowston poet Marcus Moore has shared some poems and memories of the town he loves. Growing up with special needs, Marcus (pictured) went to Sprowston First and Middle schools and remembers a lot about the area. “One of my first memories was Sprowston First School and the headteacher... playing the guitar to Yellow Submarine and also the Willow garden. “I remember sitting on some old curtains in that garden areas at lunchtime! “There also used to be a garden on the Recreation Ground (close to Edwards Road side called either the Marsh area, or garden. “Can anyone else remember that?” A bike accident meant that Marcus needed ongoing surgery but he has not let that slow him down. “I manage to keep myself busy, belong to a lot of clubs, participate in a lot of activities. I am always writing letters and voicing my opinion – particularly at local council meetings, and always giving councillors a nudge.”

POEMS BY MARCUS Tyres The Recreation Ground Two parks and all Fourteen gates to lock Around 4.20pm As the bells begin to ring Ready for 4.30pm When the park has

Heart is in the right place Been over-generous agan this year A certain seat on the back of the bus (To eavesdrop) Only a tiny little thing Night shift, Batman pyjamas Very worried as haven’t seen for ages Once took home the tea And coffee by mistake All round the table Ribbons and open top cars As I find myself a silly old fool Now treasure this and place it Somewhere special – good for you!

Dementia Dementia, a terrible illness and killer Kindness as I think I have inherited that gene Another man on the scene Tears make wrinkles Buy all year round During that terrible Covid Had to keep a distance Shy, but never forgotten Standing in the doorway A wink in the eye Handwritten letters as genes Must have skipped a generation Several local issues have been resolved with the help of Marcus badgering the authorities, something which he is very proud of.

But he also has an artistic side. “In my spare time I write poems,” he said. “So far I have had more than 400 of them published.”

Renovations are complete After nearly a year, the renovation of the Norwich Samaritans listening centre, Varah House, has now been completed. The £750,000 refurbishment project of the St Stephen’s Square branch has been completed on budget and on time. The project has been designed to allow more space to grow as the charity aims to help support around 30,000 callers a year. James Ellis, branch director, said: “We would like to thank all those involved in making the renovation of our branch possible – from the many trusts and donors to architects Brown & Co and main contractors Overton Ltd. “Without their help this would not have been possible. We now have a branch that will see us able to continue support, and allow us to expand so that we can support even more for many more years to come.” The branch had to move for the first

time in 58 years to temporary offices on Westlegate, but now looks forward to returning to the same Victorian building at 19 St Stephen’s Square where it has been home since 1964.

THAT WAS THEN... James Ellis pictured outside the HQ before its revamp took place. The current shop on Westlegate will be moving into the larger premises on 17 Westlegate (which was the temporary home of the Norwich Samaritans branch while the refit was carried out).
