editor's letter At Gazette I sat and thought long and hard about how to rehash minimalism and make it interesting. What you see before you is the result of months of hard work, self-doubt and one too many late nights. That being said, I have never been more proud to have my name against a piece of work. The concept of this magazine is simple: if you are seeking to put effort into the effortless and uncomplicated, this magazine will take you on a fashion and lifestyle journey. Gazette takes a mature approach to fashion and lifestyle through the simple and minimal aspects of life. It is the antidote to the prevailing bling culture of modern day. We will expand on your interests, be it fashion, interior design or how to’s. Gazette encapsulates a way of life, should you wish to take it on board. We are talking simplicity and bringing it back to its most elemental form. 10 REASONS WHY BEING A MINIMALISTIC IS AMAZING The minimalist lifestyle is steadily gaining clout among Millennials and changing the way we treat those around us, how we perceive media, what we do to enrich our lives and how we focus on our passions. But, what does it mean to be a minimalist? At its core, being a minimalist means investing your time in the important things in life. Sound broad? Yeah, the issue with this statement is that people have trouble identifying the parts of life worth their time and energy. It’s hard to be a minimalist; it requires you to be highly self-aware of what your actions mean. Right now, it’s more important than ever for us to be minimalists because the obstacles we face in society require us to be adaptable. College debt requires you to be more frugal; chasing your dreams demands incredible focus, and maintaining your health, both mind and body, involves making time for exercise and reading. Moreover, to have loving relationships, you need to invest time and cultivate your ability to be empathetic.

MINIMAL decor Leibal was started in 2010 as a sourcebook to collect the world’s most beautiful and minimalist designs. Since then, the blog has evolved into a leading authority on design, and is focused only on the most recent works in regards to architecture, interiors, furniture, and products. In 2012, Leibal expanded into an online shop, curating a collection of carefully selected products and brands. In an effort to make design accessible, Leibal became the exclusive wholesale distributor for a number of worldwide brands as well. In the end, promoting designers and brands will always be the focus for Leibal.

Liebal houses more than fifty brands which caters to minimal product and furniture design. This season we chose to introduce brand MENU, one of the many brands out of those fifty. Menu’s philosophy is simple. They want to make the world better, less complicated, a little bit nicer to wake up to. Collaborating with super-talented designers, they make objects to be treasured now… and forever. They work with some of the most exciting and driven creative individuals from the worlds of architecture and design to produce high quality design with a crisp Scandinavian look. For example Wooden Bowls looks so simple in its elegance – humble even. But it is the result of a full-blown exploration in wood by the super-talented Norwegian design duo Jonas Ravlo Stokke and Øystein Austad. Put Wooden Bowl to work storing small items, or enjoy it empty for its raw and Zen-like beauty. (Listed with price on page ) At Menu they are obsessed with clever solutions for modern living. They want to make beautiful objects for everyday use, whether that’s an indispensable item of kitchen equipment, a clever floating shelf or a beautiful vase that adds the finishing touch to your living space. Wherever they can, they work locally with craftspeople around the world, preserving skills while creating the best modern design.

WALK IN CLOSET

A walk-in-closet has been on my wishlist for a long time, but we thought of it as an expensive thing to make, so we just put the idea on hold. We also had trouble finding solutions that fitted the room in a way that we wanted it. After some serious planning a few weeks ago, we saw that we could make a walk-in-closet on a low budget and still get it as “dreamy as we ( or I *smile* ) imagined. GAZETTE 14

minimal LIVING Nina Holst sharing some secrets of building a cheap walk in closet with scratch.

We bought two MALM ( one double and one single ). I was hoping to buy them second-hand on Finn.no but couldn´t find any in white unfortunately ( Could have saved a lot of money there! ). As for the clothing rack we just used STOLMEN. It´s quite thick so it doesn´t bend even though it´s long and has a lot of weight on it. Oh, we actually had to bend all the hangers a bit to get them to fit on the rack, since it´s so thick ( this is what you do, when you want things to be affordable ha ha ). As shelves we went to a local hardware store and bought 30 cm wide shelves that we got cut in the exact length. We also bought a shorter to make space for long dresses etc. hanging from the clothing rack. All the shelves are attached with mouldings underneath that are painted white. For high heels, belts, jewellery and ties, I´ve used BYGEL ( that is

meant for kitchen towels ) that I spray painted in gold for a more glamorous look. ( Only 19 NOK for each! ) I also made myself a dressing table using a white shelf with mouldings underneath. Above I had to have two LEDSJÖ lamps that created the right “girly” look for a dream walk-in-closet. I love sitting here putting on my make up – you have no idea! For everything including the mirrors we ended up using 4300 NOK (about $720) – not so bad, huh? I hope you like it, and that it might give you some ideas for your own dream walk-in-closet! PS! I´m not sponsored by Ikea ( although I should have been *smile* ). I only link to their products to make it easier for you, in case you like to make something similar some day.

THE CONCEPT OF

CAPSULE WARDROBE

19 GAZETTE

AND WHAT IS CAPSULE WARDROBE ? The beauty of a capsule wardrobe is that it’s applicable to any style, yet the end goal is the same: to save you time getting dressed, money spent on clothes and energy thinking about what to wear. - Caroline, Unfancy.com Ever buy some fun new clothes, but end up wearing your old favorites anyway? Me too. Ever go to your closet and feel like you have nothing to wear, even when your closet is filled with clothes? Me too! I started wondering why I was keeping a closet stuffed with mediocre clothes I didn’t love/wear. And I also started wondering why I kept spending money on mediocre clothes I didn’t wear because they didn’t fit/look right. So I tried out this capsule wardrobe idea I’d been hearing about. I NEVER. LOOKED. BACK. Now I always feel like I have something awesome to throw on, be it Sunday brunch or a client meeting, because every single item hanging in my closet is something I would love to wear right this moment. We’ve all experienced closet envy. We’ve been conditioned to want the celeb closet-room, you know? And even though those are pretty cool, you can be really happy with a lot less. To me, a capsule wardrobe represents more time and energy for what really matters (less time spent deciding what to wear / less time spent shopping / less time doing laundry or caring for clothes) more money for our dreams + helping others (less money spent on clothes that never get worn) and more contentment and happiness. About this time, you may be thinking, “Yeah that’s great and all, but clothes + shopping are my thing.” Me too. The goal here isn’t to bash/quit/judge shopping and clothes. The goal is to try something new if we don’t like our current closet situation. When I started this capsule wardrobe challenge, I was afraid it was going to deny me one of my favorite hobbies (style). But I found it didn’t. In fact, I actually found my style–the real me style that makes me feel comfortable, cool, and, well, happy to be me.
