from the Estate Manager’s Desk
And so once again we find ourselves wrapping up the year that’s passed and preparing ourselves for the start of the festive season. I hope that 2022 has been kind to all of you and that it truly lived up to your expectations. Where it has not, we are given the opportunity of a brand new year with all its possibilities and promise. Let me then wish everyone a happy and blessed holiday and all the best for 2023.
Your may have noticed some significant changes to the landscaping at The Hills over the last couple of weeks. These improvements form part of the project undertaken to upgrade all of our communal gardens. This is in line with our vision to transform the standard of our landscaping and to beautify our Estate even further. We are very excited to see the end result with completion of the work which is anticipated early in the new year. Other projects of this type are also in the works, of which we will inform you in due course.
A reminder to those of you who have not yet registered on the ClickOn Connect mobile application that you can now do so at any time. The app is available for download on both Google Play and the App Store after which you can follow the simple steps to register your profile. This will make your access control and visitor management so much easier and more convenient (in addition to this, there are also a host of additional features offered by the app).
Should you run into any difficulty during the process, please remember that help at the HOA office is only a phone call away.
We would also like to remind you that the office will remain open during the December period. This means that you will be able to reach us as usual should you be in need of any assistance. Please stay safe this festive season wherever you and your loved ones may find yourselves!
Lastly, we would like to thank the Editor of our Estate bi-monthly magazine for arranging sponsorship for our Estate’s movie night, as well as LCL Construction, Re/max Infoglobe, KW Edge, Marike Strijdom Attorneys, Inyati Drilling, The Energy Gurus and Kreatief Studio. Let’s get into the holiday spirit with this fun event. Have a wonderful evening.

Letter from the Editor
Every year, I write a short letter to thank all of the residents for reading and participating in the magazine, and this year will be no different.
I made so many new year’s resolutions at the beginning of the year, both for my personal life and for my business. According to something I read, only 16 percent of people stick to their resolutions. I’m part of the 84 percent who didn’t... Life happens! It was my goal to be in control of every aspect of my life. However, as I look back at my life at the end of the year, I realize that you can’t control everything. We need to relax and have faith that things will work out.
I wanted to share just a few highlights from my perspective that reminded me that not everything in life is bad!
One of the sweetest highlights was the birth of two newborn springbucks in the reserve. Nature inspires us to be less busy, more present, less worried,
Our Estate, as well as many others around it, suffered greatly from the lack of water, due to load-shedding. This made me more mindful of how precious and essential this resource is, and that we should always use water efficiently. Read the tips for how to use water efficiently on page 66
Water shortages prompted so many people to offer to assist each other where they could. A builder offered a water truck, and people with boreholes shared their water with others. We also had Oasis Water, a resident, as well as an advertiser, bring 4,000 liters of filtered drinking water to our Estate on 14 October. This was free for residents. All they had to do was bring an empty container, though those who did not have containers could purchase these containers. As they say, “it’s better to give than to receive” - I feel proud to live at The Hills Estate and hopeful for humanity when I see such gestures.

I feel very grateful for the rain that fell in October, it turned our Estate into the most beautiful green landscape. Rain always gives me a feeling of hope. This is because it signifies to me that everything is washed clean. Maybe when it rains like this, it can be a reminder for us all to forgive, forget, and try again!
As a final note, I would like to thank everyone who has sent me messages, photos, and articles for the Estate magazine.
I wish you a blessed festive season and a prosperous 2023.

IMPALA
Aepyceros melampus
What is an impala?
The Impala is reddish-brown with white hair inside the ears, over each eye, and on the chin, upper throat, underparts, and buttocks. A narrow black line runs along the middle of the lower back to the tail, and a vertical black stripe appears on the back of each thigh. Impalas have unique brush-like tufts of black hair that cover a scent gland located just above the heel on each hind leg. The female is similar to the male but does not have horns. The male’s graceful lyre-shaped horns are about 40 to 90 centimeters long.
They have an Average lifespan of 13 to 15 years in the wild (about 17 in captivity). Gestation between 6 and 7 months. Impalas weigh between 40 to 60 kilograms and are about 1 meter tall, savannas, grasslands, shrubland, and light woodlands are their main habitat.
The impala’s social organization allows it to adapt to environmental conditions. The average female herd is between 15 and 100 individuals. When food is plentiful, males become territorial, shepherding females about their land. In dry periods, territories are abandoned as herds must travel farther to find food and clans tend to overlap and intermix with each other.
They move in leaps and bounds.
A surprised impala herd will leap about in what appears to be a disorganized way. However, this reaction helps keep the herd together and is also an anti-predator technique. Initially, an individual impala leaps up, casting about from left to right, bringing individuals into contact with each other. High jumps also allow impalas to release signals from the fetlock scent gland in midair, easier for a rapidly running impala to pick up.

Impala births usually coincide with rains.
article written by www.awf.org
Young are born year-round, but birth peaks usually coincide with the rains. The female leaves the herd and seeks a secluded spot to bear her fawn. If the fawn is born at a time when there are few other young around, then the mother will stay with it in seclusion for a few days, or even a week or more before returning to the herd. If there are many other fawns, she may take hers back to the herd in a day or two, where a nursery group may form. Nursery groups are safer because predators have more difficulty selecting an individual. The young are suckled for four to six months and reach maturity at a little over a year.
Able to both graze and browse, the impala has a greater and more reliable food supply than animals that do either one or the other. It eats young grass shoots in the rainy season and herbs and shrubs at other times.

BONSAI
Article by Horticulturist at the garden group Elize Malan
This very old art form originated in China more than 2000 years ago. The grower tries to copy trees in nature. It is grown in a container, and the plant does not have to be old for its sculpture to be considered artistic.
For serious novice growers the principles that apply are well documented in books and internet tutorials. Bonsai clubs have exhibitions and can provide all the necessary information.
Taking care of a bonsai tree teaches patience. It requires regular attention.
16 | ISSUE 6 | 2022
When life slows down over the festive season and you have some time available, why not start growing a bonsai (or two).
Pinching buds, binding and pruning the plant is an ongoing process. It will bring some quiet time to an individual, something badly needed in today’s rat race.
If you are not a serious grower, forget about the rules, buy a small bonsai, or start you own from a cutting or seedling tree.
Species that are successfully used should have small leaves, but can be deciduous or evergreen. Wild Olive, Ficus, Chinese elm, and Acacia trees are good examples.
You can start by removing a seedling from your garden, or germinate some seed, or root a cutting. Fill a shallow container with a commercial growing medium. Do not forget to mix in some water retention granules. Plant the small tree and irrigate well.
Trees need sun, but due to the small, shallow size of the container a full day’s sun will quickly dry the soil and the plant will not survive. Position the Bonsai where is receives sun up to twelve midday and then filtered shade for the balance of the day.
Organic fertiliser can be used in spring to re-vitalize the soil. Re-potting is only done when the small container is completely filled with roots. This does not mean putting your plant in a larger pot. It is done to refresh the soil and have access to the roots for pruning.
Controlling the size of your tree is important. It should be an artistic picture to look at. The young seedling will need structural pruning to create the shape you want. Maintenance pruning is done throughout the growth stage of all bonsai.
To control the direction of the small tree branches, binding wire is used. It is wrapped around the branch until it maintains the new shape. Remove the wire before it cuts into the branch and leave permanent scars.
Treat aphids, whitefly or other pests with appropriate organic insecticide when needed. If you attend to your bonsai regularly, pests and diseases will be detected quickly and this will result in minimum damage to the plant.
Unlike other works of art, there are no such thing as “finished” bonsai as long as the trees are still alive and growing; they must continue to be tended to on a daily basis.

THE HOMEOWNERS GUIDE TO SELECTING THE RIGHT SOLAR INSTALLATION COMPANY
Article by JP Liebenberg, Residential Director of The Energy Gurus
The demand for solar PV installations not only in residential but commercial properties too, has shown a substantial upward growth trend over the last few years. The increased load shedding schedules have proven extremely challenging, with residents having to deal with a multitude of related problems trying to run households and/or home offices. For those who are fortunate enough to embark on a solar installation journey, one needs to be warned that this process that seems so simple, is in fact a far more complex and challenging one. Many who have already spent their hard-earned cash on investing in a solar PV system have often regretted their decision due to their poor choice of installer who was not reputable and/or reliable.
The best way to check a solar company’s reputation is based on speaking with previous customers or seeing their historical work. This can provide a glimpse into the reputation and credibility of your potential solar installer.
The Energy Gurus team will conduct a site visit and custom design a system for the client’s home taking into consideration many other important factors that can affect the project. Once this has been completed, the team is then able to provide the client with an estimate of their cost saving per month so that they are able to establish whether the solar project is a viable one or not.
Education and awareness are key factors
When clients are embarking on a solar project, they need to be aware of the regulations in place regarding their new system. Cost-saving is always a priority for any client, and in most cases, cheaper is not always better. The most cost-effective way is to be informed enough to ensure that the installer designs the system according to what is actually needed, and not what the installer is wanting to sell. Many service providers do not conduct enough due diligence and the client is then provided with an inaccurate estimate.
Due to solar PV systems being so popular and loadshedding providing business opportunities in the market, there are many companies who are conducting solar installations without being fully accredited and having the correct know how and knowledge. Companies who are conducting solar installations and are not accredited, need to be cautious as this is a serious offense and can mean jail time if something serious happens as a result thereof. Most clients do not possess the technical knowledge to know whether their solar installation meets all the safety and technical requirements. On many occasions, clients have called upon The Energy Gurus team to assist with issues when a solar installation project has been completed by another company, and in some instances unfortunately, the client needs to spend additional money to rectify the issues.
18 | ISSUE 6 | 2022
Safety is non-negotiable
Due to the rising needs for solar PV systems, there has been a massive surge in the market of new, inexperienced installers pursuing their entrepreneurial ventures. Often these contractors attend a “weekend solar course” and start installing the next day, not being familiar with the regulations and standards, nor having the necessary skills to construct a safe installation. Homeowners must be aware that for safety reasons, there are regulations set in place by the industry to prevent any unfortunate instances such as fires, electrocution and even death. It is important to note that cheap quotes are often red flags, and we urge clients to get 4-5 quotes to compare.
JP Liebenberg, Residential Director of The Energy Gurus explains, “Many clients are unaware that only a qualified installer who is accredited by the Department of Labour, can produce a certificate of compliance (COC). In many instances, clients have fallen victim in the case where a company is not accredited by the Department of Labour, and in the unfortunate incident of a fire, an insurance claim will be a challenging one due to the non-compliance of the COC. For compliance and safety of their solar PV system, clients must ensure their installer is accredited to issue a legitimate COC test report.
Always read the fine print, especially on warranties and guarantees
Very often when a client signs a contract with an installer, and the excitement of having a solar PV system installed overshadows the need to look at the fine print and to ask important questions such as the warranties and guarantees that the company offers. It is critical to remember that when one is making such an investment, to investigate the details of the warranty’s and guarantees of both the products and services offered by the installer. What is also necessary, is the aftercare sales support offered should the client experience any challenges post installation. Another consideration is if the installer offers replacement stock if a faulty product has been installed. For example, if there is an issue with the inverter, the installer will remove the installed inverter, and have it sent to the manufacturer that it was purchased from but should not leave the customer
without a replacement inverter for that period. We also always ensure that NRS and SABS approved products are used in all installations.
<Illustration text: It has been conveyed to the industry that load shedding will remain with us until at least 2027 >
Timeframe - What to expect
On average, a residential installation takes between 1-3 days to complete. In some instances, where there may be some challenges (eg: electrical issues or where specific batteries are out of stock) the project may be delayed. A client should be wary if an installation takes longer than a week without any such challenges and product delays. This could be a red flag and indication that something may be wrong.
Familiarize yourself with your system
Once a solar PV system is installed, the client should be trained by the installer on how to use and manage their system so that they are able to get the best value for money, and to experience as few issues as possible. Within a week some clients are easily able to manage their home solar system and are aware of what appliances can be switched on and off to make use of the available power optimally.
The Energy Gurus advise that when choosing a solar installation expert, investigate as much about the company as possible. Don’t just look into their website and social media pages, but investigate other factors such as physical premises, date of establishment, are they financially sound, do they a reputable existing client base and if they have multiple references. This first step in the process is crucial to making sure you receive the best value for money.

New Year
NEW GARDENS
Message from the Garden Group
As 2022 draws to a close, with a global epidemic and surgical masks in the rear-view mirror the garden group would like to take the time to say; thank you to the Hills estate and all residents for helping make 2022 another great year.
In this short article we will be looking back on the year and what the garden group and the hills have achieved together.
Getting started
On 2nd of May we started providing our services to the Hills, we started by refining the basics and cleaning up and mowing where it was overdue, in and around the estate.
Train & Educate
After making ourselves familiar with the new environment and all the challenges at hand, we started educating our team by arranging a training session with STHILL, as well as constantly guiding staff to ensure they know how to do things the garden group way,
Safety & Security First
The Security Manager guided us around the estate and showed us where we need to do security line cutting to ensure that the estate is safe and easy for guards to patrol.
Straighten Out & Clean-Up
We started improving the general look of all the gardens by cleaning up the gardens and sorting out the grouping of plants, this is now starting to make a big difference.
Kick off with a Bang and consistently improve all gardens
After strengthening our team, we headed into the bush-veld and started mowing all the overgrown and neglected areas, We want to thank Anna Jacobs for her support in the wild reserve, she has been guiding us in the nature reserve and have helped us to identify and remove invasive species throughout the reserve.
2022 | ISSUE 6 | 21
We have also started cleaning up selected greenbelt areas where where it was most necessary, and we plan on systematically cleaning these areas as necessary.
Looking forward we aim to improve all gardens in and around the estate by consistently maintain them as well as taking on landscaping projects where it is required, we always focus on doing our work to the best of our ability, whilst being sustainable and looking after the environment.
With 2023 coming up we look forward to another fruitful year! The garden group would also like to use this opportunity to wish you all a very merry festive season.

Respect your neighbours
No construction to take place on Saturday afternoons, Sundays and public holidays. Please respect your neighbours. Construction gate will be closing on 15 December 2022 until 09 January 2023.
We are entering the season to enjoy the company of family and friends. Sometimes this means having a braai and a few drinks. Everyone wants to enjoy their property, but with that also comes responsibility.
• Please adjust the volume of your music to a level that does not disturb your neighbours. Not everyone likes the same type of music.
• Consider your neighbour especially at night when having some fun at your property. Some people are working the following day and your fun might keep them awake.
• Please keep to the speed limit inside the estate. I have noticed and even chased a few people who were driving 100km/h and overtaking other vehicles inside the estate. This is very dangerous and reckless. We have children that are walking around and visiting their friends.
• Make sure your pets are safe and on your property. We have numerous dogs that are running around in the estate.
It is of utmost importance that all crimes be reported to Boschkop SAPS, irrelevant of how small the loss is. SAPS cannot request more resources if the stats show there are no registered cases. Over the last few months, spiking, high jacking, vehicles theft, theft out of vehicles and home invasions have increased.
A crime can be reported at any police station. The police will transfer the files to the correct SAPS police station who in turn will attend and address any incidents reported.
Tips:
• Always observe and report any suspicious behavior or suspicious people.
• When driving to or from the estate, observe what is going on around you.
• Check for suspicious vehicles that might be following you.
• Do not leave any valuables in your vehicle especially when it is visible. More vehicle related crime takes place at shopping centers.
• Make sure that your vehicle is locked when you leave it in a parking area. Feel if the doors are locked. More and more vehicle thieves are caught with remote jammers in their possession.
• When approaching your vehicle observe who is around you and if you are being followed.
• Remember to observe and report I
and prosperous festive season.

For the last six years, Reddford House The Hills has been providing estate residents with a premium education option for children from the age of three months to Grade 12. The Reddford House approach to education is based on the three pillars of lateral thinking, comprehension and innovative application of skills and concepts, the school provides a safe, nurturing environment for children to thrive.

Happy, Healthy

It’s hard to believe that the festive season – with all its treats and temptations – is almost upon us again. Excited about all the celebrations but concerned about taking a few steps back on your health journey?
Here are a few tips to help you continue living well throughout the silly season…
Remember the 80/20 rule
If you’re eating well and moving your body for 80% of the time, you can really enjoy your occasional indulgences without the guilt, knowing that your body is well equipped to support you through the festivities.
Fill up on fruit
Craving sugary treats? Opt for deliciously sweet fruit. We love freshly-cut watermelon on a hot day, home-frozen grapes, or mango in our smoothies.
Choose your alcohol carefully
While we’re all aware of the many health hazards of alcohol overindulgenc, it can carry even more risks in hot weather, as it has a diuretic effect that can lead to dehydration. Try to stay below the recommended maximum of 14 units per week, and choose less
calorie-laden options, wherever possible. A vodka and soda with fresh lime, mojito with no added sugar, whiskey on the rocks, and gin and sugar-free tonic are all better options.
Stay hydrated
Keep cold water in the fridge with infusions of lemon, mint, or berries ready for regular refreshment. Always have a jug of water on the table during mealtimes, and make sipping on herbal teas (if it’s not too hot!) a way to enjoy mindful moments throughout the day.
Love your liver and support your system
Give your body some extra attention with liver and immune support supplements to see you through the late nights and festive feasts.
Make keeping active a social affair
It’s far less likely that you’ll be hitting the gym while the family is over for a leisurely lunch, but
you could all take a beach walk or other scenic stroll together, enjoy a swim in the ocean or pool, or even just dance around the living room to your favourite songs. Feeling energised? Make a day of it by visiting your local park, planning a hike, or even trying a new sport.
Manage your schedule to manage your stress
Instead of filling your holiday schedule with activities and people from morning to night, focus on enjoying the downtime that a break is meant for. There’s no need to feel guilty about spending whole days (or weeks!) alone without any plans – if you are able to do this, take advantage of the quiet time to refuel your body and mind.
Gift wellness
Not sure what to include in Santa’s stockings this year? Why not give your loved ones the gift of greater health, with things like delicious functional snacks, spa vouchers, or supplements for their unique needs?

HOW TO CHOOSE Pet Sitter or Pet Hotel?
One of the difficult decisions to make when going away on holiday or business is “What to do with our Fur-Kids while away”.
Our Pets are our best friends and even more, they are like our own Children, and leaving them behind is always difficult. I always think about it in this way – the same way we as Humans need a Holiday and time away from the day-to-day mundane tasks and duties so does our Pets, a break away from the normal routine and life…change is as good as a holiday!
There are many options and if you are fortunate enough to have a family member or a friend that can stay in your home full-time or your Fur-kids can go and visit them and stay with them while you are away, you have a great solution with peace of mind. The other options are to get a Pet Sitter to care for your Fur-kids in your home or to book them into a good quality and caring Pet Hotel.
A few options to keep in mind:
Pet Sitting Pros:
• You Pet stays in his/her known and familiar environment
• No serious disruption to your Pet or his/her daily routine
• Your home is not left alone, there is movement and this is good for security
• The Pet Sitter can also water your pot plants and ensure there are no major maintenance issues, like checking on geysers and electrical issues
• No arrangements for drop-off and pick-up needs to be made – easy and convenient
Pet Sitting Con’s:
• Your Pet is left alone most of the day as the pet sitter will visit only during feeding times for short intervals
• Your Pet may feel abandoned and get depressed
• Pets bark and get uneased when left alone for long periods, barking and crying may occur, and this will disrupt neighbors
• If your Pet falls ill, it will only be noticed a few hours later when the Pet Sitter returns
• If traveling during the Festive Season, your Pets are exposed to noise like neighbors’ parties and most of all fireworks that are very stressful for Pets and may result in your Pet escaping or being distressed.
Pet Hotel Pros
• Your Pet is not alone, there are people and other Pets around 24/7 that ensure your Pet never feels alone or abandoned
40 | ISSUE 6 | 2022
PET CARE | THE
• If your Pet gets used to visiting a Pet Hotel, they become familiar with the environment and feel at ease
• If your Pet falls ill, it will be noticed immediately, and immediate action will be taken
• Pet Hotels have daily Pet Entertainment programs
• that ensures your Pet is kept busy in a fun way
• Pets feel like they are on Holiday, having a break from daily mundane routine especially when their parents are not home
Pet Hotel Con’s
• If your Pet is not socialized, it may be a bit of a challenge for him/her to get used to the other Pets being around
• Your Pet may be exposed to illnesses that other Pets may have – most Pet Hotels require full and up-to-date vaccinations including Kennel Cough to prevent Pets from getting major illnesses
• Your Pet will not be sleeping in your bed as used he/she may be used to
• Arrangements to drop off and pick up your Pets need to be made, sometimes creating inconvenience
• Pets’ usual daily routine and environment change and may cause distress to your Pet
At the end of the day, the most important part is to ensure that your Pet is well cared for, not left alone and loved while you travel.
The options are there and it is your personal choice what you prefer. Whether you make use of a Pet Sitter or a Pet Hotel, make sure you are comfortable and happy that your Pet is in the best hands, to give you peace of mind while away. The last thing you want while you are on Holiday or away on business is to be concerned about your Pet’s well-being and care.
Therefore meet your Pet Sitter, see how your Pet responds to him/her, and make sure you can trust the individual with your home and most precious Fur-kids.
The same goes for your Pet-Hotel, visit the facility, ensure you are happy with the cleanliness, hygiene, and service, and take your Pet for a test visit to ensure your Pet is comfortable. Whatever you do or decide – please never leave
your most precious Fur-kids at home unattended, cared and loved – even if it is for 1 day or night!
May this Festive Season be a blessed one for you, your Human Family, and your Fur Family!

WHAT’S THAT BUG?
By Sougnet van Niekerk
I have taken this photo in The Hills game reserve. There are about 3 places direct along the route where you see this “thorn nest/case” in the Acacia tree. This is the bagworm moth that builds a case where it can hide. In the Acacia tree they will use the thorns or any materials from their habitat, sometimes sticks.
Bagworm Moth Case
These belong to the family Psychidae. Another common name for the members of Family Psychidae is case moths. The name refers to the habit of the moth caterpillars, which build small protective cases in which they can hide.Bagworm cases are composed of silk and materials picked up from their habitat, they are naturally camouflaged from predators.
Psychidae is a family of moths from the Lepidopteran insect order. They’re a small and peculiar group, comprising only 1,350 species. Their larval behaviour is unique, where a caterpillar collects items from its surroundings, creating a protective, well-camouflaged structure that conceals them as they go about their day.
Most species in the family are harmless to garden plants, mainly eating fungi, dead insects, mosses,
lichens and decaying leaves. Interestingly, the female moths’ and fly look similar to fly larvae, and research has shown that eggs survive throughout the birds intestine. This suggests these insects depend heavily on birds for dispersal.
Adult: Variable in size, the largest species is roughly 1.5-2cm long (wing length: 3-15mm), with the hindwing width equal to the forewing in males. Observers rarely see the adult moths because they’re either short-lived or stay concealed by their handmade cases. The females are wingless and described as maggot-like. The males possess translucent wings covered in fine, fuzzy hair, which are the wing scales. The bodies are typically dark coloured and the antennae feather-like. Moths in this group are identified using the larval casings.

Ways to dress your table for the holidays
Make festive celebrations magical and memorable with these beautiful tablescaping ideas
With staying in the new going out, tablescaping is becoming hugely popular as we seek to transform ordinary dining spaces into magical and memorable settings to entertain guests. The art of dressing a table, tablescaping is the perfect opportunity to dazzle dinner guests with your creativity and express your personal style.
Whether it’s a small, relaxed affair or a large, formal dinner
party, there are endless ways to style up looks for every season and occasion. The great thing about tablescaping is that there are no rules –anything goes. There’s no need to go all out with a silver service setup – using what you have in creative ways can look just as effective.
‘Tablescaping is all about the fun, you can show off a little and put your stamp on something temporary in a way that you may not when designing a room. I love finding reference points for the event or time or season, it lifts everyone’s
spirits to see a well-dressed table and establish a sense of occasion,’ says interior designer, Natalia Miyar.
With the holiday season approaching, it’s the perfect time to channel the tablescaping trend with your Christmas table decor ideas. Here we’ve rounded up a host of our favorite looks to get you thinking about how you might dress your Christmas dining room later this month.

Tablescaping isn’t just about knowing how to set the perfect Christmas table – it’s also about creating a sense of occasion and a magical atmosphere with clever tricks. We list our favorites below.
1. Take inspiration from a tablecloth
If you’re struggling to know where to start with your tablescape then a beautiful tablecloth can be a great source of inspiration. A tablecloth can really set the tone for a Christmas table, bringing a sense of occasion. Choosing a tablecloth with a central design focal running through the middle is a clever design trick that will help lead your eye to the beautiful table centerpiece.
perfect for Christmas and New Year table decor you can’t go wrong with an all-white scheme with hints of sparkle. Choose a white linen tablecloth with a beautiful texture, and stream with linen napkins in a color to match for interior, then elevate a table setting of simple white crockery with simple decorations and sprigs of eucalyptus.
In place of a centerpiece simply dot a selection of candles to create a cozy atmosphere. ‘For the tabletop, nothing beats candles; they cast a lovely warm glow, and they’re flattering too – everything, and everyone, looks better by candlelight,’ says Sue Jones
2. Keep it simple
Anyone who has hosted Christmas or a large dinner party knows how stressful it can be, so it’s important that tablescapes are easy to put together. Luckily, you don’t have to go to great lengths to create a beautiful setup. For an elegant tablescape
3. Build your tablescaping around the centerpiece
A table centerpiece is a starting point when tablescaping. It might be that you design it to echo the patterns in your china or the color of your napkins, but it will be the focal feature of your tablescape, so you do want it to stand out.

For a traditional, timeless table Christmas centerpiece try a design of winter foliage and candles. ‘English pine, holly, twigs, winter eucalyptus, anything that will dry nicely and add a festive scent. Once you have the base of foliage you can simply add flowers to suit and change as they wilt. For long-lasting flowers you’re best off with Amaryllis, Hydrangea or winter berries,’ says luxury florist Ronny Colbie.
For texture, you can add small baubles and dried fruits. For long tables, I always suggest using plenty of eclectic small vases to add different heights and dimensions to the tables. Finally, to finish off the table I’d suggest layering between the arrangements with antique candlesticks, loose pinecones, cinnamon sticks and tealights.
There’s a decision to be made with a centerpiece – whether at Christmas or in high summer, and that’s to do with its size. If you want to add impact, it might be larger than the table can cope with when it’s laden with food, so you may want to make space to move it onto a console table once you start serving dinner. Left on the table, it should never be so big that guests opposite each other can’t see past it.
4. Make it monochrome
Color is of course wonderful, but it’s not for everyone or for every occasion.
Monochrome tablescaping can be incredibly chic and contemporary if done carefully. One of the key things is to remember that monochrome can absolutely include neutrals. By widening your perception of what can be included, you’ll find the look becomes a lot softer and fresher.
Embrace natural materials here, as they provide a warm and neutral base for any monochromatic accessories such as linens or glassware.
5. Add some whimsy

Whether or not you have children in your home, Christmas is the ideal time to play. Remember, ‘you don’t need a lot to make a statement. Just consider your colors, tones, and textures for a consistent message.
Kitsch Christmas ornaments and baubles make wonderful additions to a tablescape. Try placing a few on the table and tying them together with a decorative bowl full to the brim with decorations – the child inside will love this so much more than some more veggies.
Festive gift boxes on place settings could each contain a similar bauble thoughtful and unexpected gift to your guests.
6. Consider textures
The texture is so important when it comes to creating a multi-dimensional tablescape.
‘More is more!’ says Penny Morrison. ‘I love a maximalist approach so I always suggest using lots of accessories and layering different table linens to add different dimensions to the tablescape.’
Think tactile chargers, woven placemats, and the softest linens.

TOYOTA HILUX GR SPORT - 165 KW OF ATTITUDE
• Hilux GR Sport continues Toyota South Africa’s GR product roll-out
• Engine outputs boosted to 165 kW and 550 Nm • GR-specific suspension tuning
• Bespoke exterior design with distinctive GR-Sport front grille treatment
• Wider overfenders and black exterior-trim package
• Leather/Alcantara interior trim with unique GR accents
• 17” Alloy wheels shod with 265-65-R17 tyres
The 2022 Hilux GR Sport is the second GR iteration of South Africa’s best-selling vehicle, following the debut model introduced in 2019. It features a host of unique design and dynamic features to differentiate it from its stablemates and position the Hilux GR-S as the hero model of the range.
Exterior Design
The Hilux GR-S wears a unique suit, with the designers penning the design around the concepts of toughness and sportiness. A large and prominent black front grille, horizontal cross bar and Toyota lettering (a GR Sport trademark) announce its presence. Special treatment has been applied to the LED headlights, alongside vertically stacked air ducts with integrated LED fog lamps.
Keen observers will note that the bumpers are based on the Raider model design (rather than Legend variants) and most notably include wider black overfenders with contrasting inserts. This helps give the GR Sport a more aggressive appearance. Black mirror caps, black door handles, black side steps and rear styling bar with GR branding - create a sporty contrast. Customers can also opt for GR side decals on the doors to further add to the visual drama (optional).
Four exterior colours are offered mimicking the GR brand colours: Arizona Red, Graphite Grey, Attitude Black and Glacier White.

Interior Design
Design changes to the interior include a new instrument cluster with metallic bezels and red needles, bespoke leather-trim steering wheel with red contrast stitching and sporty aluminium pedals (with rubber inserts). GR branding has also been applied to the Push Start button and centre console. Striking carbon-fibre trim replaces the brushed finish in Legend models, which is complemented by red accent trim signalling the GR-S’ performance credentials. The racing-inspired front seats feature Alcantara inserts, GR badging on the headrests, red accent panels plus power adjustment for the driver’s seat.
Engine & Drivetrain
While the GR-Sport (aka GR-S) moniker normally represents cosmetic and handling enhancements, the Hilux variant has a trick up its sleeve in the performance department too. Power output has been increased to 165 kW (+15) and torque ramped up by 50 Nm to a peak of 550 Nm. This has been accomplished via a special ECU calibration which interfaces with revised 6-speed automatic transmission mapping and lock-up control - to ensure optimised power delivery. These improvements result in a 0-100 km/h sprint time reduction of 0.65 seconds. Top speed is quoted as 175 km/h.
Only one drivetrain configuration is offered in the form of a 4x4 transaxle mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission with Auto LSD function.
Specification & Features
Standard specification remains comprehensive with the model closely aligned to Legend-grade specification (with the exception of an auto-dimming rear-view mirror and JBL audio). A new feature is the panoramic view monitor.
Safety & Security
The Hilux GR-S is equipped with Toyota Safety Sense (TSS), which offers a full suite of active safety aids including Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert (LDA) and Pre-Collision System (PCS). These are joined by the obligatory ABS, VSC, EBD, Hill Assist Control (HAC) and Brake Assist systems, as well as passive safety aids such as ISOFIX and a full airbag array.
Model Line-up & Pricing
Hilux GR-S 2.8 GD-6 4x4 6AT R 865,400 (correct at the time of going to print)
Peace of Mind
All Hilux models are sold with a 9-services/90 000 km service plan (intervals set at 10 000 km) and 3-year/100 000km warranty. Service and warranty plan extensions can also be purchased from any Toyota dealer (220 outlets).
All Toyota models come equipped with Toyota Connect, including a complimentary 15 Gb in car WiFi allocation, vehicle telematics and enhanced user features via the MyToyota app.

WATER SAVING TIPS
Article by Leandi van der Walt
Next to air, water is the most important element for the preservation of life. Water is a finite commodity which, if not managed properly, will result in shortages in the near future.
Water conservation can go a long way to help alleviate these impending shortages.
Do not leave the water running while shaving, brushing teeth or washing hands.
Depending on the washing basin and tap’s pressure, between 5 to 20 litres of water are wasted during this process per minute. Use a bowl of water to shave and close the tap while brushing teeth or washing hands and only open to rinse.
Close taps tight to avoid dripping.
Dripping water might have a minor affect on an individual water bill but once various households are combined, the quantity of water wasted results in thousands of litres. Seal dripping mixers and ensure taps are closed tight.
Do not run a full bath
If possible, avoid bathing completely and shower instead. A full bath requires at least 140 litres of water. Invest in a EcoSmart shower–some use as little as 18 litres of water.
Do not flush the toilet unnecessarily
Surprisingly, a large portion of drinking water is used for flushing the toilet. Do not flush the toilet if not necessary, or install a flush/stop button or a dual flush system. Small flushes require only around 3 litres of water while a full flush requires double the amount. Around 8 000 litres of drinking water could be spared per person per year through this.
Water flowers and plants at dusk
By watering flowers and plants at dusk less water evaporates. Watering lawns should also be done accordingly or be avoided completely. Generally lawns do not need watering, even brown grass will naturally turn green after getting the next shower of rain.
Use a bucket of water instead of a hosepipe to wash the car
Thousands of litres of water are wasted while washing a car. Rather use a bucket of water while washing and only use the hose pipe to rinse the soap off afterwards.
