EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S LETTER WHAT IS OUR IMPACT ON THE COMMUNITY?

At Kids4Kids, we are always asking this question of ourselves and our partners. It’s not enough to facilitate literacy development and youth empowerment workshops, only to say we’ve engaged 1000+ youth. So, what’s the impact? What changed as a result of these trainings, workshops and programs? We ask because we want to know what difference our actions and involvement has made. We ask because we are determined to bring about positive community change, starting with our youth. Working together with like-minded partners, we are committed to empowering youth in Hong Kong with skill sets and providing them with a platform to have a voice, and to take socially responsible actions that will bring about positive changes in the community. Through our combined partnership work with whom we continue to foster the spirit of collaboration and increased impact in the social change sector. We ask ourselves, “so, what’s the impact?”, and we are clear in identifying the changes that we want to see. In the coming year, Kids4Kids will continue to embrace the spirit of community change and organizational innovation by expanding our program delivery to provide digital literacy to low resourced primary schools in Hong Kong. As we move forward into 2018, Kids4Kids is building on our past success and focusing on becoming an even stronger organization. We are formalizing our programs, diversifying our funding streams and refining further our evaluation methods to position Kids4Kids to serve even more communities and children from low income families in the years to come. We welcome you to join us on this journey.

Danielle Stutterd Kids4Kids Executive Director 1

SHARING THE LOVE OF READING

A PATH FOR KIDS TO SHARE THEIR STORIES

PREPARING TODAY’S YOUTH FOR A BRIGHT FUTURE

UNLEASHING YOUNG PEOPLE’S COMMUNITY SPIRIT

Buddy Reading was established to bring the enjoyment and benefits of storytelling to children who would otherwise not have the experience at home or at school. Kids4Kids recognizes that the development of a good reading habit in the early years enhances language learning and knowledge acquisition to prepare for a life time of learning. Buddy Reading develops children’s cognitive abilities, positive values and interest in reading, enhances language competence and nurtures thinking skills.

My Story Creation gives children from all backgrounds the opportunity to create, write and illustrate their own stories. My Story creation is an annual territory wide competition open to all primary school aged children. Each year, the top 10 stories are published in a Treasury and sold in bookstores and online to celebrate creativity in our community.

Powered by Service is a bilingual school based capability building workshop delivered to schools with limited resources, covering approximately 6 hours of training. Through a high energy, transformative learning experience, students discover their ability to impact the world by building personal and community leadership skills, placing a strong emphasis on service as a means to develop the whole person.

Act!on for a Cause (AFAC) is a community action challenge designed to mobilize 12 –17 year olds from diverse backgrounds to take action on real life social issues. Youth are invited to submit creative action projects that support social issues such as animal welfare, bullying and tolerance, education, environment, health and wellness, homelessness, poverty, and literacy. Entries are judged based on creativity, need and impact on the community. The top 20 projects each receive HK$3,000 and the support of a Kids4Kids professional mentor to bring their community action project to life.

Ü Develop a love of reading English storybooks in children from low income families

In addition, Kids4Kids runs free My Story Creation workshops for non-English speaking primary schools to encourage broader community inclusiveness in the competition. My Story Creation workshops target students from low resourced primary schools and organizations supporting low income families. During the workshops, children develop skills and confidence to write and illustrate their own creative stories and are encouraged to enter their stories in the My Story Creation competition.

social entrepreneurship as my minor study at City University of Hong Kong, I can only learn some theories in books at school. Interning at Kids4Kids allowed me to experience the daily operation and challenges faced by Kids4Kids. After my two-month internship at Kids4Kids, I have learnt that being humble, open-minded and ready to accept any challenges at work are important working attitudes in non-profit organization. Lastly, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Kids4Kids for giving me a precious learning opportunity! Cynthia Ho Sin Tung

I think after experiencing Buddy Reading, there is a huge latent demand for English, and that kids want to learn, you see how much they want to engage in a story, even from the group reading to the individual reading time. They are really open to just following great narratives, and if we can provide that in English, especially for kids who don’t get the exposure, I think that’s doubly as rewarding in a world where being multilingual, or bilingual at very least, is crucial to success. It was inspiring to feel the energy of 130+ young people (including Kids4Kids’ own youth leadership team) eager to make a difference in their communities and brimming with ideas on how to take action to effect change. Can’t wait to see how they put it all together in their Community Action Projects!

The Powered By Youth Forum is a fantastic platform for kids to get together, discuss projects they’re passionate about and bring their ideas to life - I wish there had been something similar when I was younger!

Kids4Kids is a great organization, providing a lot of resources for our students to understand how our community works from more perspectives. When youth are growing up, apart from textbook knowledge, it is also extremely important for them to have the chance to learn how society works, how to interact with others, how to bring those youthful, innovative, and crazy ideas to life.

Christine Choi, Director, Elephant Community Press

Kay Withers, Senior Vice President, Artemis Associates

Mr. Arthur Lee, Teacher, Sir Ellis Kadoorie Secondary School

This is exactly the kind of platform Kids4Kids provides for students’ creativity, imagination, and dreams. With support from the experiences of people from the business world or other insightful individuals, students are able to translate their crazy, passionate, and useful ideas into the real world.

It has been another busy, but immensely rewarding 12 months for Kids4Kids. As a charity, we have continued to grow and professionalize. To date, Kids4Kids have partnered with over 200 schools, 50 charity organizations, and involved over 15,000 students, an increase of 50% over the previous year. Our program work spans from developing literacy and creativity skills from a young age with Buddy Reading and My Story Creation... to empowering youth to take positive action and be socially responsible giving back to the community through Youth Empowerment programs such as Powered by Service and Action for a Cause. In recognition of our efforts, Kids4Kids received an “Outstanding Social Capital Partnership Award” in January 2017 from the Hong Kong Government’s Community Investment & Inclusion Fund. Internationally, we are also being recognized for our impact with a nomination for the business achievements of Kids4Kids. From thousands of applicants mostly in the business for-profit sectors, Kids4Kids was awarded as a Finalist in the annual Telstra Business Woman in Asia, the first year that NGOs had been included.

On the governance front, we created sub-commitees to support our Board’s management and decision making, such as - Finance and Operations; Fundraising and Communications; Program and Business Development to give more focus and in-depth oversight in these funtional areas of importance . Most importantly, none of these would have been possible without the dedication of our full time team led by Danielle Stutterd, our passionate student Advocates Leadership Team, our hundreds of volunteers engaged every week and our NGO partners. We are indeed grateful for the support we have, and in the comimg year, we look forward to creating a bigger impact in the community together.
