Kids4Kids 'Writing for a Cause' 2015 Review

Page 1

A Word from the Executive Director At Kids4Kids, we understand the importance of artistic and creative expression in leading a meaningful life and know that these skills must be nurtured at a young age. As parents, educators and as a community, we can come together to provide suitable environments to foster creativity in children. Creative writing is one such skill that enables one’s ability to communicate, to solve problems, to share ideas and learn, all vital skills for leading a successful life. This year, Writing for a Cause has grown to encompass a greater number and diversity of students. We have made a concerted effort to engage more local, under-resourced primary schools in our creative writing and illustration workshops to inspire, motivate and encourage those students to share their stories. In 2015, we reached over 1300 students through our My Story Creation workshops. By reaching out to local primary schools and offering free creative writing workshops, we have been able to make the 2015 Writing for a Cause competition more inclusive for all children from all backgrounds. This year, our winning stories collection, Treasury 5, sees entries from 13 local schools and 6 international schools. We look forward to reaching out to more schools to inspire and nurture the creative spirits of our future generations.

Foreword by Martha Keswick If only there had been a competition like Kids4Kids ‘Writing for a Cause’ (WFAC) when I was a child. I remember handing in stories to my English teacher and never receiving much feedback so was always left wondering whether I could actually write. And that is what I love about WFAC as it is all about nurturing budding young authors and illustrators, helping to inspire those who may never otherwise engage in a creative process. It is surely a life changing moment for children to see their work being published in a beautiful bilingual collection. Now in its 9th year, and with 40 schools and learning centres taking part, WFAC has served over 5,500 participants and published 57 stories. I have thoroughly enjoyed being on the judging panel these past 3 years and part of a team that offers such an extraordinary experience to Hong Kong’s Local and International school students. We are all authors and illustrators. Anyone can write or draw a book. For me, the most daunting part of writing is the first line and I can imagine for the illustrator, it is the first stroke. But we all need to begin somewhere, even when we are not sure we are heading in the right direction. And this is where it falls to the amazing teachers who dedicate energy to encourage young talent to believe in themselves and take up the challenge of creating a publication-worthy story. My advice would be never wait for perfection, just start today!

Martha is one of the core judges of Writing for a Cause 2015. A Putonghua speaker herself, Martha has created many bilingual children’s books: ‘Max and Mei’ the Chinese zodiac series, the ‘Pangu’ comic book series, and now she’s working on ‘Zhongguo Mingren’, stories about famous Chinese people.

Spotlight On...

What do they think about Yannis Chan, student Writer and Illustrator of “Pandora”

Q: You wrote Pandora’s Box. Did you write the entire story by yourself? Yes, I was the one who came up with the plot of the story. If there were any words that I couldn’t spell, I would ask my teacher to help me. Q: It’s wonderful. How did you manage to do that? Before the competition, Kids4Kids gave me the opportunity to participate in storywriting workshops that taught me how to write a story.

Yannis, 10, one of the Overall Winners of Writing for a Cause 2015. Yannis is studying in Kowloon Rhenish School.

Q: Is there a message in your story? Kindness begets kindness. Pandora did everything she could to save the birds, and that led the baby birds to take care of Pandora in return. Q: That’s a lovely message Yannis. So what do you think was the biggest challenge writing the story? I think just getting down all the details of the plot into my story in order to make my story more well-rounded. Q: Can you give me an example? For example, explaining how Pandora took care of the birds in the story and how exactly did that lead to the birds leaving behind the eggs for Pandora. Q: What do you think is the most special part of being an author? An author is basically a storyteller. I feel happy just by making stories for other people.

5

Q: Have you ever got a writer’s block? How did you get over it? Sometimes. If that ever happened, I just read other books in order to gain some inspiration.

Writing for a Cause? Q: Do you think Yannis has developed over the course of this competition? Yannis has always enjoyed drawing and writing. This competition really allowed her to develop her interests in these areas.

Mrs. Chan Ching Yee, Yannis’ mother

Before joining Writing for a Cause, Yannis would simply tell me her ideas about different stories that she was thinking about. But during the competition, she learnt to develop her ideas from a rough draft into an actual storybook complete with details. Her writing and drawing abilities have greatly improved, and she also became very persistent and diligent in completing her story. After all, story writing is quite a long process. I really think these two aspects were what she gained most out of joining Writing for a Cause.

6

Spotlight On...

What do they think about Belinda Tse, student illustrator of “Reef Savers”

Q: Why did you join the competition? I wanted to make books! I saw books created by others and I wanted to make one too. I like to write, but I was mostly interested in drawing, so I got a writer to work with me. Q: What have you gained from the overall experience? I’ve learned to work in a team. Sometimes I didn’t agree with my friend, and I talked to her about that, and we tried to do something that we both liked.

Belinda, 8, one of the Most Promising Illustrators of Writing for a Cause 2015. She’s studying in Year 3 in the Chinese International School.

Q: Is there a message in your story? It’s about keeping the world clean. In the story, people keep throwing rubbish into the sea, and there’s this dolphin and her friend who work together to take away all the rubbish. Q: What has been the biggest challenge during the creative process? It was a bit confusing when my friend was doing the writing and I the drawings. Sometimes I drew the pictures, but my friend had changed the story. We discussed this and in the end my friend gave me an outline of each page and I was able to finish the work. Q: How do you feel as a winner? I feel proud and happy, and I am encouraged to try again next year.

7

Writing for a Cause? Q: What did you think of this year’s submissions? There was a lot of variety. Very creative stories and the artwork exceeded my expectation. Some stories have great twists at the end which surprised me. It was really fun to read them all.

Howard Wong, competition judge

Q: In what way do you think the competition benefits kids? It gives them a goal. A lot of kids – I have kids myself – are very goal-oriented. The competition gives them a drive and a purpose to create a story and finish it, which is fantastic because I know some kids have a problem with finishing a task. So, with a contest and a deadline, they have to do it and do it well. Q: Why did you get involved in Writing for a Cause? I’m a writer myself and I didn’t get involved in a lot of contests growing up. So, if I could go back in time, I would probably have liked to do contests, to hone my writing skills and give myself a purpose to write. That’s why I think this competition is very good and I’d like to get involved.

Howard is a creative consultant and writer from Canada working in animation, branding, comic books, education and video games.

Spotlight On...

What do they think about Charlotte Kuan, teacher Q: Do you feel Writing for a Cause has benefited your students? The competition has given students a chance to get together to work on their stories, something they hadn’t done before. When they finished, I could see that they felt a true sense of satisfaction for what they’d achieved.

Ms. Kuan, English Panel Chairperson of C.C.C. Chuen Yuen First Primary School

Q: Will the school take creative writing further? After the writing workshop, my colleague and I got some inspiration and we did a follow-up. We have a creative writing class now. It is a continuation of what Kids4Kids has done.

Eva Hui, teacher Q: Have your students been given any guidance in creating storybooks? Kids4Kids provided two workshops for our students, one in writing and the other in drawing. They were very helpful in giving students guidance in creating their own stories. Q: Would you recommend this competition to other schools and why? Yes, I would highly recommend it. Not just because of the two valuable workshops, but that Kids4Kids gives very good support to the students. They’re given the opportunity to make their own ebooks. They’re very happy and are really proud of it.

Ms. Hui, Teacher Librarian of C.C.C. Heep Woh Primary School

Writing for a Cause? Jo Au, writing instructor

Jo conducted My Story Creation Workshops. She is a final year student at the University of Hong Kong, studying English Education.

Q: What do you think about Kids4Kids? Kids4Kids offers a good platform for students to exercise their creative and critical thinking. I have conducted several English creative writing workshops for Kids4Kids, and have volunteered in the Buddy Reading scheme for quite some time. I find that these workshops enable students to immerse themselves in a rich and fun English environment! Q: From your observation, what are the common difficulties students experience when they write stories? Students tend to have trouble with spelling and expressing ideas in written English. The spelling difficulty often stems from not having a good grasp of the letter-sound relationship. Q: How do My Story Creation Workshops help students with their story creation? Kids4Kids provides a well-designed story writing guide which helps students write a story step by step. We also use memo stickers to help them organise their ideas. Q: Can you give some advice to students who are interested in writing stories? A simple way to start is to read a lot of stories. This will give you creative ideas, and you can learn how to tell a story.

Perspective

A Gratifying Summer By Priscilla Ngai Priscilla is in her final-year studying Education at the University of Hong Kong. Over the last summer, she conducted more than a dozen My Story Creation Workshops for Writing for a Cause. Her dream is to empower young people regardless of their diverse talents, with critical thinking and leadership.

I spent my summer working for Kids4kids for two months last year. I had little idea what I was going to encounter, but the experience opened my eyes to the amazing capabilities of children when they were given a chance to try their hands on something. “Writing for a Cause” has different meaning to different students. For some, it is just another writing exercise with which they are very familiar and comfortable. They are able to fluently create a piece of work with little assistance. While for others, it is a rare opportunity which they had never been exposed to. While assistance is needed, they are amazed how “crazy” and imaginative their ideas can be, and they treasure very much what this competition can bring them. The competition provides fantastic atmosphere for the school to promote creative writing. The ‘My Story Creation’ workshops, together with guidance from their teachers, have helped them overcome their struggles and the “writer’s block”. The experience was not only helpful to creative writing, but also to their personal growth. From preparing the workshops to conducting the

11

workshops myself, I came to see how the material works differently with different students. These unfamiliar concepts of “setting”, “characters” and “plots” may at first sound vague and puzzling, yet with the My Story Creation Workshops Booklet provided as well as the examples, these concepts become more real and relevant. Once they are able to identify these elements in the stories they have read, they get an idea of how to apply them in their very own stories. The workshops, I believe, are helpful in guiding them relate their daily reading, to their own writing experience. The illustrations also go hand-in-hand with the writing and it gives them even more motivation, as they can tell their stories not only with words, but also by bringing the pictures they have in mind to life. It has been a heart-warming experience working for Kids4kids and seeing how writing empowers many children who join the competition. “Writing for a Cause” is more than a competition; it’s an experience that will no doubt improve a kid’s patience, observation and creativity.

Kids4Kids Programs

Literacy Development Kids4Kids hold My Story Creation workshops for children attending lowresourced primary schools in Hong Kong. The workshops develop children’s creative writing and illustration skills. Finished works can be entered in the Writing for a Cause competition.

Writing for a Cause is a territory-wide creative writing and illustration competition. The most creative and meaningful stories are selected by a panel of judges to be published in fully illustrated bilingual storybooks that are sold online and at retail stores across Hong Kong...

13

...But these are just part of our effort in Literacy Development in children. Each week, trained volunteers of our Buddy Reading program visit low-resourced local schools and community centers to share their love of reading with small groups of children, bringing them the enjoyment and benefits of storytelling.
