Founder's Letter On behalf of our Board of Governors and our passionate team of staff and volunteers at Kids4Kids, we are so excited to share with you our first Annual Report. Since 2008, Kids4Kids has been inspiring young people in Hong Kong to take positive action and become more socially responsible and community conscious citizens from a young age with a belief that ̒you’re never too young to help.̕ Our literacy development work in the community started with the annual ‘Writing for a Cause’ where kids develop their imagination and creative talents in writing and illustrating a story that becomes Kids4Kids Books. These creative stories goes on to inspire another child to create their own story too. Our literacy development work have also extended to an important community outeach program we have been running since 2010—Buddy Reading. This is where volunteers of all ages share their passion and talent of storytelling to kids from low-income communities in Hong Kong. Since 2014, we have also introduced another important outreach program called My Story Workshop to provide kids with guided creative skills training in writing and

illustrations to help spark the imagination of kids to create their own story. Kids4Kids as our name suggests is powered by the enthusiasm and optimism of today’s youth and their desire to help create a better world for the future. Our Youth Empowerment and Action for a Cause platform gives secondary aged youth the opportunity to use their power and passion to take action in creating service projects that tackle social problems in the community. Our annual Powered by Youth Forum is the signature event of our Youth Empowerment platform which at the start of every school year brings together like-minded teens all across Hong Kong united with a common objective of wanting to make a positive difference. Kids are our future. We need your continued support to help our programs inspire all young people in the community, and to give opportunities for all to take action and make our Hong Kong a better place.

Gratefully yours,

Michele Lai

Kids4Kids Programs

Buddy Reading Program

Writing

Since September 2010, the Kids4Kids Buddy Reading Program has been a popular volunteering activity for anyone who enjoys sharing their love of reading and storytelling to young children. Our program focuses on children who have limited opportunity to be read to at home, as well as giving them access to a broad range of age appropriate storybooks.

Launched in 2008, the Writing for a Cause competition is open to all Hong Kong schools, learning centers for students aged between 6 to 12 years of age. Participants can enter as a solo writer and illustrator, or in a team of up to four members.

Every week, a team of trained Kids4Kids volunteers visits various local schools with low-income families and community centers to conduct English Buddy Reading sessions with the students. The children enjoy the attention of a dedicated language role model and experience second language immersion in an enjoyable and comfortable setting. The primary objectives of the Buddy Reading Program, is to instill in children who may not of had the opportunity, a love of reading and to develop their confidence in English, using a fun and engaging approach, delivered on a continuous and regular basis. Since launching the Buddy Reading Program 1300 Kids4Kids volunteers have been reading to over 2500 children in 20 local schools and community centers across Hong Kong.

“Buddy Reading has an amazing impact on the kids. Reading

a Cause

This writing and illustration competition is a ‘sport for the mind’ for young authors and illustrators. All works submitted are judged by a panel of professionals, either from educational institutions, publishing houses, or children’s books authors and illustrators. Participants also use their creative writing and illustrations to help other kids as the published books become a resource in the reading library of the Buddy Reading Program. The books are also available to purchase in stores around Hong Kong and online with the proceeds contributing to Kids4Kids Literacy Development Programs. Since launching the Writing for a Cause program over 5,000 students from 33 schools and learning centers around Hong Kong have participated. A total of 57 winning stories have been published and sold as colorful bi-lingual children’s picture books.

Powered by Youth

Sharing

The annual Powered by Youth (PBY) Forum is a one-day event held in September that brings like-minded youth together to effect positive change in the Hong Kong community.

This project is 100% Kids4Kids student led and truly demonstrates the power of our Hong Kong youth in taking positive action to give back. The project engages schools and organizations from all over Hong Kong. Each campaign focuses on collecting for a specific cause, and the objective is to collect from those with much to donate to those with little. In 2014 we collected “For the Kids” and “For the Home” and redistributed the items locally via our supporting charity partner the Crossroads Foundation.

In 2014 we had our fifth PBY forum and over 100 students from 30 schools and different socio-economic backgrounds came together to learn from one another. Each year has a different community based theme and participants have the chance to learn from relevant industry professionals and educators and cooperatively create solutions to real life issues and design a community-based project.
