Canine Construction & Confirmation
No judge knows it all! by Narelle Hammond Canine
Construction and Conformation FB Group)
Good judges cannot be produced overnight, despite all the modern aids, training courses, lectures, and other forms of instruction available today. Many years of contact with many breeds and exemplary examples of those breeds are essential to lay the foundation of the good judgment of dogs. Few breeds, even the most numerous and those of the highest merit, are blessed with more than a small number of top-class judges who know the breed through and through, who are unbiased in every way and can be relied upon to do as good a job on dogs they have never seen as on those with which they are familiar. Theory and the study of breeds’ backgrounds, uses and history are fine, and judging courses too have their value, provided the instructors know what they are talking about. Still, in the end, it is contact with good dogs that provides the background without which no one can hope to become a top-class judge. It does a disservice to the breed when judges are appointed who lack practical experience, which is vital to understand dogs and the breed concerned. The right way to become a judge is to plod on as a breeder/ exhibitor and be known within the dog world because of the quality of your dogs. Such breeders enter the ring as judges with no mistrust
in the mind of exhibitors. No judge knows it all! Correct breed type and conformation and unique points of the multiple breeds shown. No judge can be an expert on all breeds. All judges make mistakes or get things wrong on occasion; not doing so would be inhuman. It is possible to acquire an eye for dogs to tell a knowledgeable judge whether the animal is good or bad. To acquire that elusive “Eye for a Dog” takes a lot of time, a lot of practice, and some flair for the job. None of which can be learned from books or viewing photos on social media. The Pareto Principle is observed at every conformation dog show. 80% of dogs are average or below average. 80% of judges are the same. Only a few judges get it, which becomes apparent by what these judges breed and show themselves. Good new judges come up slowly until they are accepted for their expertise and diligence in acquiring it. Those hours watching and caring for good dogs in their backyard have contributed vital ingredients to such an individual’s knowledge. Constant contact with good dogs is a vital ingredient to good judging. Western Australian News Column
Western Australian News Jeni Sach WA Columnist Email: mailto: kaasha@aapt.net.au The March long weekend in WA is on the last weekend of Feb/first weekend of March. It is also usually the weekend of our big international Western Classic weekend. Unfortunately, with Covid restrictions in place the event couldn’t even be run with the interstate judges contracted so has been postponed to the end of May. Our first show for March was the Building & Amenities Show conducted by Ladies Kennel Club of WA on 12 March 2022. We once again had a full panel of WA judges and General Specials was judged by Ms Stacey Sewell. Best in Show and Open in Show was awarded to Michelle Roberts’ Dalmatian, Supreme Ch Winterfalls Some Like It Hot.
Runner-up Best in Show Neuter was T Foutaine’s GSP, Ch & Neut Ch Wahrelegende Cookies N Cream TK.S JC. I am not sure who was awarded Best Neuter in Show however Runner-up was again Ashlea Stanton and Julie Harris’s Shetland Sheepdog, Neut Ch Lurikeen Talkn About My Girl. The last of the March shows was run by the Utility Dog Club of WA. Again it was cut back to one show with local judges with Mr Doug Bowe presiding over General Specials.
The weekend of 18, 19 & 20 March should have been the West Australian Kennel Club’s Championship Show held over two nights with the WA Contest of Winners on the Saturday night. Again, due to Covid restrictions the plans were changes, local judges were contracted and only one show was held on the Friday night.
Mr Bowe had judged Group 6 and awarded his young Best in Group winner with Best in Show and Best Puppy in Show. It was a Siberian Husky owned by Mr M & Mrs J Boase and handled by Chelsey Primrose, Canyonlands Made From Legends. The dog had only be in WA for about a week.

We now have one more night show at the beginning of April and then move into daytime shows. April sees a few gaps in the calendar with only a few All Breeds Shows and some group and breed specialties. But on the upside – we have many interstate judges coming over for a lot of our upcoming shows. If anybody has news they wish to share please either PM me on Facebook or email me at kaasha@aapt.net. au Jeni Sach

So I have rejoined my old Magazine this time as the SA Columnist and look forward to contributing again so if you have anything for any upcoming issues, please send me a PM on facebook or email which you will find below. Due to the number of Wasps being endured on DRP again further baits have been placed out. These will be removed prior to the shows on the weekends and only the traps will be left out. Please be cautious around the Wasps if encountered as they are aggressive and painful if stung by them. It would help that if you see them flying with food on them watch which way they travel as they will go straight back to the next. At least this way we can get an idea of which way they are coming from.

Remember to cover all food and drink and do not throw bait on the ground. SA hasn’t been overly busy with shows so far this year, only now starting to welcome back interstate judges and unfortunately still the occasional show cancelled due to
flights from NZ being cancelled again for our Northern Easter shows. February, we welcomed our new EO Deb Lee, who is a qualified social worker having spent over 30 years working in the community, predominately in the area of health and community services. Her journey into management was accidental, fulfilling a need. To her great surprise she loved it. She moved over time from managing a small teat and mental health program delivery through to deputy CEO of the same organization then the CEO of the Adelaide primary health network. She has a solid experience in tender and grant writing, responsible for writing the winning tenders for both the medicare local and then the adelaide primary health network, alongside a significant number of small grants. She also has a master’s in business administration which has inspired her passion for innovation, great strategy and ensuring a positive culture in organizations. She has a passion for community engagement and providing innovative solutions – working alongside team members and rolling up her sleeves.
Her great passion is dogs! She has the pleasure of many over her lifetime and am currently blessed with two Portuguese water dogs, Sebastion who is 3 and Izzy who is 11 weeks old. Together, Sebastian and I have attained level 5 obedience and he immensely enjoys both Rally and Scent work. She is very much looking forward to including Izzy in her team work.
much looks forward to working alongside everyone and understanding what we want from DogsSA.

This clubs last show was held in March 2019 with the rest of the year Specialty shows around the country cancelled due to covid and only having 2 other specialties held in 2020. As reported last month, at Huntly/Tauranga weekend the puppy Whippet was Res BIS (PIS) at one show and PIS at the other. Like so many youngsters, this was her first weekend of showing. Well done Libby Clarke with Arjuna Nelli Ph’ant
Otago KA was on the 20th March where John Clark gave the Rotty Spr/SplGrCh Revell Tis Balou’s Reign at Straumburg (Bell) BIS and the ESS Arawhiti Unique Eugene (Trainor) Res BIS. Another excited exhibitor was Jorga Dixon gaining Myrah Staffordshire Bull Terriers their first NZ Champion, Myrah Million Dollar Monster and he backed it up with Junior in Group at Otago.
I am super excited that Taranaki Working Dog & Waikato Working Dog have banded together to hold a Working Dog Weekend with what I think will be the first weekend with Overseas judges in NZ since the pandemic began (apologies if not). Both Working Specialists at that, with Joan Hutton (Corgi) and Ellen Nankivell (Roughs/Shelties) judging. Really hoping nothing falls apart with our plans and hope the Working Dog Community support us.
Karen Bell also reports that her Pug Hotrod won his 3rd BISS under Ann Dobie at the Dot Courtney Memorial Champ Show. This has given him is Speciality Grand Champ so he becomes Spl Grand/ Grand Ch Christabell Super Bee.
Now that the outdoor limits have been relaxed let’s hope we see lots more Clubs holding shows and no more postponements. Stay Safe Penny
