We could very well see the re-registration of the Shikoku which is recognised by the FCI as the ANKC is arranging the Shikoku to be added to the National business system. The Shikoku will be found in the utility group (Group 6). That’s some of the interesting developments and news around the dog world. I hope everyone is keeping nice and warm as we head further into winter, I’m sure we are purposefully keeping closer to our furry friends to keep warm; I know I am! Great Cattle Dog Muster The Great Cattle Dog Muster is a three-day event staged in September 2021 (10/11/12) by the Muswellbrook Chamber of Commerce and Industry and supported by the Australian Cattle Dog Society of NSW Inc. The event is the first of its kind in Australia. It is expected to draw visitors from across the region, throughout NSW, and around Australia. With the Upper Hunter being the birthplace of the Cattle Dog, this makes the region an ideal location and drawcard for cattle dog breeders, exhibitors, enthusiasts, and pet owners. This event will become an annual signature event for Muswellbrook and the region and bring excellent opportunities to showcase all that the Upper Hunter offers. The three-day event combines activities that cater to the serious cattle dog enthusiast, the pet cattle dog owner, and the general public. With a country Vibe, festival feel, and family open day, the event expects more than 8000 visitors. animal behaviour from a very young age. Her personal dogs have worked on movies, television commercials, performed in front of live audiences, and competed in many different dog sports. As a professional scent dog handler for several years (Australian Government), and a few years in the horse industry (dressage) Donna, is involved with many aspects of the dog world, covering both working dogs and conformation. Donna, who has a Graduate Certificate in Professional Writing (Deakin University), is a published writer of all things canine in Australia and Internationally. Donna has been involved with pedigree dogs since 1992, showing her Alaskan Malamutes, Golden Retriever, and since 2004 Australian Shepherds. Donna has also helped others assess and campaign many other breeds to their titles. Passionate about her breed, the Australian Shepherd, Donna has experienced a great deal of success at all levels of competition, including having imported, shown, and bred Multi Best in Show and Best in Specialty show winners, as well as winning Best in Show 2 at the prestigious Sydney Royal in 2016. While Donna commenced her breeding with Alaskan Malamutes in 1994, her love for the Australian Shepherd took over in 2004. Importing her Australian Shepherd foundation stock from the top kennels in the USA, Donna considers breed type and consistency in style and balanced movement, and excellent workability and performance as paramount. Donna’s limited breeding program, which aims for quality and not quantity, reflects this ethos. Commencing her judging career in 2005, Donna gained her Utility Group Licence and Working Dog Group in 2008. Donna has had experience judging both in Australia and overseas and very much enjoys the honour of being invited to judge and the pleasure of awarding well-conformed, balanced, and sound exhibits that display all the requirements of form and function for their breed. In giving back to the world of Dogs, Donna is actively involved across many disciplines for many years and, more recently, has been promoting and supporting the new sport of ANKC Scent work. She has titled multiple dogs in formal Obedience, Working Pack, Endurance, and Rally Obedience. Donna’s firm belief that the more we can do with our dogs, the better life is for humans and their canine companions. Donna is hugely passionate about breeding, exhibiting, and judging dogs and promoting purebred dogs and dog sports. She feels extremely privileged to be invited to officiate over the Sweepstakes and Property classes at the 2021 Australian Cattle Dog Muster and is very thankful for this honour.

Following on from our Sweepstakes and Property classes will be the first of the breed championship shows for Australian Cattle Dogs and Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dogs judged by well-known Veterinary Surgeon, radio, and TV personality Dr. Rob Zammit BVSc. Dogs, the very word, describes Dr. Rob’s life. Dogs as a child helped him through the trials and tribulations of youth; his hobby, well it was dogs: - obedience, showing, agility; professionally, as a veterinary student, he knew he would work in a dog-based practice; his most beloved possession in life, his wife Fiona, well they met because of dogs. Their children, of course, have their own dogs. Having worked in veterinary practice for over fifty years, Rob still loves his work, and his passion for dogs spurs him on. As a veterinary student, Rob fell more in love with working dogs, finding them on every farm he was required to attend. Rob has been a licensed ANKC judge of the Working group for approx. 40 years. So, what is essential to Dr. Rob when judging dogs? Temperament. Not necessarily over-friendly, especially in an Australian Cattle Dog, but the correct character defined by the breed’s work. Movement. Every dog has its own anatomy. Every breed requires a specific gait that typifies that breed and allows it to complete its duties. And this is most true in working dogs. Breed type. That a dog must pertain to a specific breed standard, ensuring the dog’s function is bred for can be carried out by that animal. For example, the correct development of the under jaw is essential for a cattle dog. And to have a properly developed mandible with correct bite compels the dog to have a strong muzzle and logically a strong skull with correct stop. Every component in a dog’s anatomy is connected to another area, so it must come together in a cohesive and balanced combination. Human civilization accelerated once dogs worked with us to keep sheep, goats, cattle, and many other animals (even reindeer). Every nation on earth owes so much to canines. Australia most certainly, having developed the best sheep and cattle industry in the world, owes a tremendous debt to its working dogs; therefore, it is with absolute pride that Dr. Rob accepts the judging appointment to assist in Australia’s inaugural Great Cattle Dog Muster. The second of the championship shows for Australian Cattle Dogs and Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dogs will be judged by Victorian judge Mrs. Lyn Watson. Lyn became a member of Kennel Control Council of Vic. in 1959 with their first show dog, a Pekingese. Bred one litter under Lingsun prefix and the mentorship of Gladys Pateman before transferring passion to the Afghan Hound, founding the

Afghan Hound Club of Victoria in 1962. Showed successfully and finished or bred more than 120 Champions before expanding into Greyhounds and Italian Greyhounds as favoured breeds, adding to the champion significant number under the Shaaltarah prefix. Her Afghans, Greyhounds, and Italian Greyhounds enjoyed Best in Show awards in Australia and worldwide, with the most famous show star Ch. Solstrand Diamond Lil – Dog of the Year, Contest of Champions winner among other prestigious awards. A dog of such caliber as Diamond Lil tends to make constant repetition either out of reach or no longer on the bucket list; therefore, the desire for winning ribbons no longer drives her. Throughout a sixty-year purebred career, Lyn has also owned Australian Cattle Dogs, Old English Sheepdogs, Whippets, and Schnauzers, each of these giving extraordinary insight into what makes for breed type. Always particularly drawn to comparative anatomy and form for function in our pure breeds. Passed first judging exam in 1969 and was granted Specialist license for Afghan Hounds, fulfilling the requirements to judge the Hound Group in the following year. By 1985 All Breeds judging status was attained. Additionally, Lyn served on VCA Committee, fulfilled a term as elected Vice President, and Chaired the Victorian Judges Training Programme during my tenure in office at VCA, following long service to the judges’ training panel. Many International appointments have taken her to Canada, the USA, New Zealand, Europe, South Africa and UK, Peru, Malaysia, Singapore, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Philippines, India, and Australia-wide. Judging American Greyhound and Afghan Hound Specialty Shows were definite highlights of an excellent judging career. Co-judging, some of the world’s most respected shows, has enhanced her career by lasting friendships with some incredible dog world personalities. In 1990 Lyn married Peter Watson and contributed to his campaign as first elected President of the Victorian Canine Association. Co-bred and handled another thirty-odd Golden Retriever champions under the Diogenes Prefix. In 2004 Peter and Lyn virtually retired from breeding and showing when they moved to India with Peter’s business. Did continued to judge regularly, even as an ex-pat, often fulfilling speaking engagements associated with purebred dog matters wherever major shows took her. Since returning to Australia in 2005, their previous interest in Australia’s native dog, Canis Dingo, graduated into full-time conservation and preservation breeding activities and research into that species. Still, their purebred dog interests were maintained with Deerhounds as companions and house dogs. Judging dogs worldwide remains a treasured part of Lyn’s

current life. Lyn is excited to be part of the inaugural Great Cattle Dog Muster. Our Handler judge is Mrs. Belinda Beves. Belinda is a third-generation breeder/handler starting her dog showing career from 5 years of age. Junior handler years were highly successful, winning 5th place then 2nd place at the prestigious PAL international Dog Shows, showing many breeds including Maltese, Australian Silky Terriers, Pomeranian, Standard Poodle, Welsh Pembroke Corgi, Afghans, just to name a few with parents Peter and Barbara Beves. The life of a young adult, marriage, and family took over for many years, and I returned to the wonderful hobby of showing dogs in 2002 with the gorgeous breed the Lhasa Apso. My childhood memories flooded back, so I continued to hold workshops in several regional areas. In 2005 I held the first Junior Handler workshop at Gunnedah with 35 enthusiastic young handlers. Nominated to join the Dogs NSW Junior Handler Working Party (JHWP) in 2009 by the late John Forbes and have mentored many Juniors through their journey to become excellent young adult handlers and now Junior Handler judges themselves. Being nominated to be the Convenor of the JHWP and approved by the Dogs NSW Board of Directors in 2019 was a definite highlight for the work and free time given to the juniors of NSW. Our Junior Handlers compete at most shows to gain their qualification to compete in the prestigious Dogs NSW Junior Handler State Final, where the winner will compete against all State Finalists for the opportunity to represent Australia at the famous Crufts Dog Show in England. Together with my fantastic committee, we created an excellent 2020 State Final held at Orchard Hills with great success. I am honoured that Mr. Ken Hammond has asked me to judge the Junior Handlers at the Great Cattle Dog Muster 2021, and I look forward to this wonderful event.

Victorian News Column

Victorian News Mike Higgins Victorian Columnist Email: mikemonarkin@aol.com Hello from Victoria It has been a tough 18 months for the Victorian dogworld! Mid March 2020 shows were suspended due to Covid and did not recommence until January 2021 with stops and starts since then. At this stage none of us could have imagined the adaptations ahead. Basically any puppy born after 15th December 2019 missed puppy classes in Victoria and debuted as a Junior. The National point score was abandoned (at a time when a Victorian dog was leading) due to the uneven playing field. No one can predict who would have won for 2020, but for those who pursue point score results, many lovely dogs perhaps were denied their place in history. As we were placed back into lockdown in May 2021 a Victorian dog in the lead nationally again was disadvantaged. At the end of the year perhaps many Victorian owners will look at national results and wonder what if? Perhaps in times of uncertainty it is State results that matter, if you think point scores matter at all! Some Victorians took the opportunity to travel to shows over the border but this is not possible for everyone, and the uncertainty of getting into other States, or of getting back home, without getting sent into sudden quarantine always made it a gamble. However, those who did travel found it a relief to feel almost normal without the restrictions placed by the Victorian Government on dog shows. Those clubs trying to run shows faced an ever changing set of rules. Social distancing, masks, disinfecting of table, nobody allowed to touch the table surface or place a brush

down, box lunches instead of sit down, no catering vans. Permits to run an event not granted until close to the event. Permits granted and then shows cancelled only days out due to sudden restrictions. Many clubs had to postpone and reapply for a new date. By May/June postponed shows were being postponed a second time and the availability of dates is becoming limited. Dogs shows are a Tier 3 event. They must be on a securely fenced ground with gatekeepers and QR codes which has meant some regional shows have had to cancel or move venues to either Bulla or KCC Park. Neither Bulla or The Park are permitted to have 7 rings inside due to density restrictions. Lilydale KC ran their show over two days to accomodate this. For some Clubs it just became all to difficult and they made the decision not to hold a show. Dogs Victoria reached out to them and formed a Covid Roving Committee to try and fill the void. Hopefully when we get back to normality these Clubs will return as some of them are very old clubs. As usual, it is volunteers who make sure events are run, Covid or no Covid. Without volunteers we would not be able to enjoy our hobby, Confusion reigned over how to get puppies to new homes during lockdown with periods where travel was restricted to local areas and none between Melbourne and regional, not to mention the cancellation of interstate flights. Many vets only took emergency cases and owners had to hand the dog over in the carpark and could not attend the consultation inside the practice. Part of dog shows is the social side which may have left some members feeling isolated. Some took the opportunity to gather for walks, coffee, puppy socialising in local parks or at KCC Park in groups of the allowable number. Social media, for good or bad, became the way members

kept a feeling of community. How would we have coped without technology? 2020 Dogs Victoria AGM was held online and what a learning curve that was. We are about to hold another one. What it did prove is that regional and rural members, and those who for various reasons cannot attend a meeting on a cold, winter night, are now able to participate in the organisation. However, being only online excludes those who do not have reliable internet or are not up with technology. Some of them struggled in 2020. 2021 looks like being a hybrid AGM with a limited number allowed to physically attend along with a Zoom attendance. This seems the way of the future.

Dog folk are resilient and resourceful. In Victoria as I write not only are we just coming out of another lockdown, but parts of the State are reeling from the impact of a cyclonic storm and flood event leaving over 120 homes uninhabitable and hundreds more damaged. The worse hit areas have a high number of Dogs Victoria members and some were without power for over 10 days, many trying to keep puppies as well as themselves warm. Our thoughts are with them. Fires, pandemic, floods, storms. Not easy being a Victorian lately! Mike Higgins mikemonarkin@aol.com

The 2021 AGM will welcome newly elected DV Committee members to join the think tank to continue to adapt our organisation. Technology has also allowed live streaming of dog shows. Victorian dog shows might have ceased but dog show tragics could usually find a show interstate being livestreamed. Livestreaming keeps older members interested without leaving the comfort of their sofa, it allows breeders and fanciers to see dogs on the other side of the country, or the world. It gives newcomers a chance to study procedures, handling and breed type.

The first weekend of June began with the Advance Winter International over 3 days. A show that is marked on many calendars throughout Australia, this year still drew a fabulous entry without its usual International Judging panel. Unfortunately, COVID limited the number of interstaters able to attend but the committee was flexible and worked hard to try and give everyone time to assess if they could travel and enter …then for those that could not travel, entry refunds were offered immediately and arranged.

Huge congratulations

Our very own Margaret Bush was awarded an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) in the General Division in the Queen’s Birthday Honours. Margaret manages the canteen at David Roche Park for Dogs SA and along with all the ordering and much of the food preparation, she co-ordinates the teams to serve and cook at the shows. Margaret is a well known identity not only within our own state but with many interstate Judges & Exhibitors. She has volunteered as an active member for many dog and horse clubs and community organisations for, safe to say, decades. A truly special lady and a very worthy recipient of this prestigious honour. Again, congratulations Margaret.

Wendy Baker and her wonderful team of ADSS and helpers, convened 4 All Breeds shows in SA’s Riverland at Barmera. As per usual, the shows were organised and well run and I believe those that attended enjoyed the relaxing and friendly atmosphere that “away” shows afford us all. As always when a hurdle is sent Wendy’s way, she overcame it with flying colours and even though the weather didn’t present as predicted …it was a great weekend. The 1st show was Friday afternoon, with 2 on Saturday and the last on Sunday with an early finish for all to travel home safely. Entries were 265 – 306 – 305 – 259 with a full interstate panel of 4 judges adjudicating. Best in Show winners were :

I want to begin by thanking everyone from around the country who has shown their support to Katelyn Innes. Since last month, Katey has started the road to recovery. It is going to be very long and very slow, but she has been moved out of ICU and into the high care unit. Katey and her family are going to continue to need a lot of support for a long time to come, but please know that your donations, prayers, and words of encouragement are making a difference. Last month I brought you the results from the Tasmanian Gundog Trial Association’s Retrieving Trials for Gundogs (15-16 May), held in the Midlands Area. I now have some fantastic photos from this trial to share with you. Once again, congratulations to those who received passes and titles. The club held more trials, 19-20 June, in the Winkleigh Area, judged by Mr. G. Allen (SA).

June was a much quieter month in the NT with a limited number of shows and trials on the calendar. Here’s hoping clubs spread them out more evenly next year! There’s quite a few Darwin exhibitors looking forward to the first Alice Springs show since March 2020. It’ll be the kick-off to our Show Circuit for 2021, a great trip to do and see the NT if you’ve not been before. A very big congratulations to Supreme Champion Fabulose Stella From The Hood (Imp SRB) on obtaining her Supreme Champion Title. Rottweiler Club of The NT have just announced they will be holding their inaugural Utility Group Open Show on Monday 26th July. A big thank you to the judge and sponsors for their support in making this possible for RCNT. Will be great to have another fully fledged club in the NT. Last shows for May had Darwin Ladies Kennel Club making the hard decision to cancel 1 of its 4 shows for the weekend. Unfortunately, state border lockdowns had them scrambling to replace a judge only a few days prior to the event. Dalton has also picked up BIS at the following Open Shows - AEC on the 12-6-21 (R King) and BIS at Hibiscus Coast 13-6-21 under K Jackson. This was Daltons 1st Champ BIS and Kim believes that this makes him the youngest Gordon BIS winner at just 2 years 1 month old. But a special note was that Geoff Whitfield gave the Gordon she used to show Gr. Ch Cannockbrae Matouka Mac his 3rd BIS to become the 1st GR Ch Gordon in NZ, way back in July 1997!

The Beardie NZ Ch Lyntree Cosmic Hallelujah going Res Best In Show. Kenny also went onto Best In Show at the Open Show later that day.

Reserve Best in Show at Wellington was the Bouvier Tommy - Am/NZ Ch Bon Idees Qaught You Looking at Bouvpilot, Tommy is NZ’s #1 Dog All Breeds in NZ (Dogzonline Pointscore).

The South Island also only had the one All Breeds Championship Show Canterbury Ladies KA with B Parker judging BIS. Sorry no results for BIS but Res was the Basset Ch Hunterspark Here’s Mr Harry (M&W Hewitt) Lots of Open shows happening around the country but very limited Championship Shows. Annual Conference Of Delegates was expected to be an interesting one with the Recommendation for the Sale of Dogs NZ Headquarters at Porirua but common sense prevailed and after much discussion it was passed (66 yes / 2 no) to sell the building with the general feeling we should look at purchasing suitable office space in the area and look elsewhere for a property to develop as an exhibition centre for the Lower NI. After all these years Porirua sadly is no longer fit for purpose and everyone realises this.

Tommy also went BIS at the Wellington Working Dog Club (D O’Neill) the same day.

Lyn & Gary Carleton were awarded a Certificate of Appreciation for 40 years of continuous service and commitment to dog club activities in the Wellington Region and support of both Dogs NZ and its members. CONGRATULATIONS to you both.
