Canine Construction & Confirmation
A Breeder supplied by Narelle Hammond Canine
A Breeder is one who thirsts for knowledge and never really knows it all, one who wrestles with decisions of conscience, convenience, and commitment. A Breeder is one who sacrifices personal interests, finances, time, friendships, fancy furniture, and keep pile carpeting! She gives up the dreams of a long, luxurious cruise in favour of turning that all important show into this year’s “holiday”. A Breeder goes without sleep (but never without coffee!) in hours spent planning a breeding or watching anxiously over the birth process, and afterwards, over every little sneeze, wiggle or cry. A Breeder skips dinner parties because that litter is due, or the babies must be fed at eight.
Construction and Conformation FB Group)
A Breeder’s eyes are blurred from pedigree research and sometimes blind to her own dog’s faults, but they are ever so keen to the competitions faults and are always searching for the perfect specimen. A Breeder’s brain is foggy on faces, but it can recall pedigrees faster than any computer. It’s so full of knowledge that sometimes it blows a fuse: it catalogues thousands of good boning’s, fine ears, and perfect heads and buries in the soul the failures and the ones that didn’t turn out A Breeder’s heart is often broken, but it beats strongly with hope everlasting... and it’s always in the right place! Oh, yes, there are breeders, and then, there are BREEDERS!!
A Breeder disregards birth fluid and puts mouth to mouth to save a gasping new-born, literally blowing life into a tiny helpless creature that may be the culmination of a lifetime of dreams. A Breeder’s lap is a marvellous place where generations of proud and noble champions once snoozed. A Breeder’s hands are strong and firm and often soiled, but ever so gentle and sensitive to the thrusts of a puppy’s wet nose. A Breeder’s back and knees are usually arthritic from stooping, bending, and sitting in the birthing box, but are strong enough to enable the breeder to Show the next choice pup to a Championship. A Breeder’s shoulders are stooped and often heaped with abuse from competitors, but they’re wide enough to support the weight of a thousand defeats and frustrations. A Breeder’s arms are always able to wield a mop, support an armful of puppies, or lend a helping hand to a newcomer. A Breeder’s ears are wondrous things, sometimes red (from being talked about) or strangely shaped (from being pressed against a phone receiver), often deaf to criticism, yet always fine-tuned to the whimper of a sick puppy.

Teena Sloan Tasmanian Columnist Email: killilan@bigpond.com Cake By The Ocean at Combined Breeds Dog Club.
Well with winter well and truly set in and mother nature being especially viscous shows over the coming months will be quite spread out. My roving around NSW, QLD & VIC has come to a chilly end, and I am looking forward to getting to some shows in Tassie in July and catching up with everyone.
At the Utility & Non Sporting Dog Club Sonja Gangell’s Samoyed Ch Lunasea Nothing Better (AI) won Back to Back Best In Shows. I am told the weather was especially atrocious with the grounds under water, lets hope we can have the luxury of an indoor facility in the coming year.
My last show in Qld and with the Shih Tzu Ch Killilan Yr Honour I Rest My Case at 13 months old take out Runner Up Best In Show, such a thrill and stopping off in Victoria for a show “Eamon” Sup Ch Killilan Defence Rest Yr Honour took out his 116th Best In Group such a thrill that the little “Apple Isle” dogs can hold their own in the Big Smoke. The last month in Tassie has not seen many shows but some of the winners have been:Trudi Kingston’s Belgian Shepherd Groenendael Rembrandt De Bruine Buck (Imp NDL) winning Runner Up In Show, Alomes/Hickie Tibetan Terrier Ch Gengala Ink Pad winning Best In Show & Pearcy/Gibson Beagle winning Runner Up in Show with Sup Ch Karakush
The last shows in June were the Working Dog Club shows Best In Show PM and Runner Up In Show AM

I’m new to this having just taken over from Penny Brooks who I believe is shortly taking off on a photographic journey to Africa. Bon Voyage Penny.
sonality matched by a booming voice, he was a popular Steward and will be missed. Rest easy now Bill.
I’ve left writing this until I returned from the NZKC Annual Conference of Delegates. Yet again it was pretty much a non-event. I can never work out why Clubs, which are charged a compulsory travel equalisation fee for the Conference (so that it costs small clubs in the whop-whops the same as a big club on a main route) then choose not to send a delegate. Just one solitary remit this year and that was just a bit of tidying up a Rule! I have to say that the Balance Sheet was impressive and despite COVID and a huge variation of Budget to Actual, the club still managed to show a small profit which was, under the conditions, quite remarkable.
So on to some shows…
The Executive Council welcomed some new blood in Lynley Drummond. Lynley has a particular interest in Canine Health & Welfare and has served on that committee for a few years and is a breeder of Golden Retrievers and Gordon Setters. It was also a welcome event recently to see the DNZ newly appointed Canine Health & Welfare Officer, Dr Rhea Hurley speaking on national TV supporting pedigree dogs! What a breathe of fresh air that is after a couple of decades in the boondocks! Apparently this is going to be a “concerted effort”. Roll it out I say! Sending very best wishes to Jean McErlane, who not only lost her long time partner recently, but was then faced with an unplanned “vacation” in hospital. BUT what a lovely surprise to see her travel from Auckland down to Wellington for the ACOD. A true supporter of the Club.
Executive Council has announced that effective 1 September 2022, clubs will be permitted to go back to their normal Championship Show schedule (whoopee) and so of course there has been a frenzy of clubs playing “catch up” and applying for dates that are not their regular weekends. As NZ judges have been “done to death” in the past couple of COVID years, exhibitors have been rubbing their hands with glee with the prospect of Australian judges again. However clubs might get a bit of a shock when it comes to paying for airfares, as gone are the $600 return fares! Any club that doesn’t budget carefully could find itself in financial do-dos. The North Island FCI shows (2) are coming up on the first weekend of July. They have what I would consider quite a poor entry (under 500), but times are tough and fuel is an outrageous price. However for the life of me I cannot understand why NZ Challenge Certificates are not being issued too. This is what happens in European/ Asian countries with CACs – why are we different? I believe that would’ve improved the entry considerably. Mind you, in those countries you also get a critique for every dog and there are awards other than Excellent…..! Since the last issue there have been no Champ shows in the South Island but Auckland has been on the up and providing opportunities at Open Shows for trainee judges. Thank you to the indefatigable Shirley Rolfe for the photos and results!
The Wellington dog world recently said farewell to long-time supporter, Bill Crawford. A guy with a big per-
