For those that don’t know three weeks ago Katelyn a third generation much-loved member of the Tasmanian dog show community who exhibits British Bulldogs and Dalmatian’s collapsed at a dog show that she was an organising committee member. Katelyn was flown to Hobart for emergency surgery where It was found she had experienced a significant brain bleed. She had surgery to release the pressure and was placed in an induced coma. Katelyn is still in hospital fighting hard and will have more surgery scheduled once the baby arrives. Katelyn’s road to recovery will be a long one. Katelyn is married to husband Mat and has a 2-yr-old son Aiden, and is currently 5 months pregnant with a baby girl. Katelyn’s mother is well known British Bulldog breed specialist and ANKC All Breeds judge Yanina Smith.
The fundraiser dog show has been set up for Katelyn, any donation large, or small will be an enormous help as the bills don’t stop mounting just because you are in hospital - every dollar counts. If you have a dog past or present follow this link for the virtual show and all proceeds will be donated. All proceeds from this event will go to Katelyn and Show Manager have generously offered a prize for whomever submits the most entries.

Ozy’s Doggy Column Too many main registry worthy dogs on limited registration? Hello everyone, I hope my last column was thought provoking and got you sharing lovely photos of pedigree purebred dogs on social media. I have seen an increase in images shared with the hashtags #ankc, #australiannationalkennelcouncil, and #ankcbreeder over social media which is great to see! As discussed in the weekly woof newsletter by DOGSNSW by Dr Karen Hedberg BVSc, President DOGNSW, I decided to focus this week’s column on another, hopefully, thought provoking topic. As most members will know, the number of puppies placed on the limited registry is much higher than those on the main registry, despite not all those puppies having a breed standard fault. DOGSNSW is encouraging breeders to place more puppies on the main registry if they don’t have a breed standard fault and to list them as “not for breeding”, “not for export”, instead of placing the puppy/puppies on the limited registration if the puppy has not been deemed to be bred from. Another issue raised was that show worthy dogs who are on the limited registry and how this may prevent newcomers into the showring. Being already on the main registry will prevent the hassle of upgrading the dog’s pedigree papers. In other news the ANKC has planned to make changes to the whippet breed standard coat colour section. What currently reads as “Any colour or mixture of colours”, to “Any colour or mixture of colours, except merle.” Stemming off from last week’s column on promoting ANKC pedigree purebred dogs, here is the Sydney Royal Easter show’s best in show footage.

Have a lovely week,
Ozy.

Canine Construction & Confirmation
Kennel Blindness...….a common disease From The New Art of Breeding Better Dogs by K. Onstott Supplied by Narelle Hammond Canine Construction and Conformation
FB Group)
“For breeders to be successful, they must look at their dogs …. not only in the face, but in the body, front and running gear. Even to themselves many breeders will not acknowledge their failure when they fall short of their objective...and to convince others of the perfection of their dogs, they convince...usually only themselves”. Only the most foolish buffoon would dare to suggest that their dog was fault-free. Even though we are in a modern, high-tech era, this affliction remains as prevalent as ever and there seems to be no immunization for this dreaded disease. Kennel blindness IS a “disease” and statistically found in about 80% of breeding kennels, which renders a breeder incapable of seeing faults in their own dogs. Kennel blind breeders tend to twist and distort the standard to justify the dogs they breed. They fit the breed standard to the dogs in their kennels. Whereas the correct way is to fit the dog to the breed standard. Because serious faults can become set in a couple of generations, unless it is quickly diagnosed and treated, kennel blindness can be fatal to a successful breeding program.
20 | K9online.com.au
One of the major problems with “kennel blindness” is the breeder’s inability to see and appreciate the good qualities in another breeder’s dogs and tend to focus on negative features of dogs other than their own. To combat kennel blindness, you need to read, understand, re-read and understand your breed’s standard. This must be done on a regular basis, keeping in mind that most standards depict the essential aspects of a breed, therefore allowing breeders the freedom to express their own concepts of the non-essentials. In this way a range of excellence may be produced in a breed without sacrificing each dog’s ability to fit into the standard. No “perfect” dog has ever or will ever be bred in any breed. Even your best can always be improved upon.
It is important to realize that the concept of what you think is ideal may change. Experience with a breed may gradually change the priority a breeder gives to certain features. A stickler for correct heads may gradually start emphasizing on angulation and movement, realizing that the latter are also essential aspects of the breed. Kennel blind people always have an excuse for why their dog doesn’t win. While some of their reasoning may be legitimate, consistently losing under a variety of judges usually means a dog does not fit the breed standard in one or more important aspects. Blaming the fact that your dog is not winning on bad judging, politics or whatever is time wasting. You need to except the possibility that there may be something wrong with your dog. If your dog is not winning, ask several knowledgeable people to evaluate your dog. These breeders and/or judges do not necessarily have to be in your breed. Tell them to be honest and you must listen with an open mind. Some breeders are simply not born with an “eye” for a dog. Despite having read and studied their breed standard, they are incapable of correctly evaluating structure and movement. Of more serious concern are the breeders that have never read their breed’s breed standard or novice breeders who are strongly affected by a dog’s temperament and personality and other breeders who just simply do not have an “eye” for a dog. Many kennel blind people think all puppies are cute. These owners usually decide to breed their dog, not to improve the breed, but because they love his personality and want more puppies just like the sire and dam. How often do we hear from kennel blind breeders, “All the pups are show quality”. Even if the litter has not been born!!!
die” situation. This can affect objectivity. Breeders who are not “kennel blind” are objective and rarely satisfied with their own dogs, criticizing them more harshly than others would. They also thoroughly understand their breed standard and can discuss the pros and cons of their dogs objectively. Regardless of time and effort already spent, they are also ready to remove from their breeding program dogs that do not pan out, even to the point of starting over with new foundation stock. They also have an “eye” for a dog and can appreciate a good one regardless of who bred or owns it. If caught in time, kennel blindness can be cured before it has a lasting, detrimental effect on their breeding program, so it is important to look at the following tips. A void over-emphasizing a certain feature in the breeding program to the detriment of overall correctness. Although most breeders try to emphasize the excellence of the whole dog, it is human nature to over-emphasize certain features. In fact, the importance we give to a particular trait in our dogs is how we express our “breeding personality” and create what we feel comes close to our ideal. One breeder may be a stickler for fronts and another for toplines. The danger here is that by focusing on just one feature they can become “blind” to other faults that may be creeping into their breeding program. To assess your kennel blindness level, ask someone whose opinion you respect to objectively evaluate your dogs.
Another scenario is breeders who have produced quality animals in the past but are now struggling to stay on top. There are also many successful breeders who have had past super stars and are now looking for their next big winner. They may be more prone to over-looking faults in their own dogs. Breeders working with a small gene pool as they are not prepared to look outside their own kennels, or they use the closest and handiest dog to where they live. They tend to not want to open their eyes to problems in their breeding program. Then you have breeders whose every waking moment revolves around dogs, making dogs a “live or

Queensland News Cristina Fornasier Queensland Columnist Email: Cristina_for@hotmail.com Phone: 0418 219 071 Well welcome winter months to Queensland and early mornings of chill heading to dog shows, trials as well as any other activities you might be heading off to. Time to rug up just as Jolene Mcguire was pictured doing so.
cey Lamb and family, Kylie Reid, Debbie Scooby Teirney and Tracy’s Daughter who was a legend in the Canteen that it all comes together behind the scenes.
Special mention goes out to Lorraine Bond who unselfishly helped the club by paying for all the Hire equipment needed for the change of Venue. Thanks again. Hardest workers were Karen Knight, Andrew Ness and Trevor Sully. It was a first for us to have three memorial shows beginning with George Ness, then Norma Zimmerle and Ronald Bond. The Lockyea Valley Kennel Club was sent some challenges in holding their championship shows recently but with their hardworking committee saw a great plan fall into action ensuring that all entered could attend and enjoy their weekend of showing. From Alan John Knight A huge thanks to all of you the exhibitors whom without yourselves we have no shows. Andrew Ness presented his Dad’s, George Ness trophy. We had Norma’s family present her perpetual trophy We were also lucky to have Lorraine Bond present Ron’s Trophy The Spit was a huge success hopefully all enjoyed it thanks Cashman Smith. These shows can be interesting and the country shows have a different atmosphere, nearly all went out of their way to keep the grounds clean and stayed off the oval.
From John King – Norma Zimmerle Memorial Show – Best in Show winner.
From Gwen Hovey – Ronald Bond Memorial Show – Best In Show winner.
Well after a terrible few weeks we ventured to the Lockyer Valley Kennel Club Shows and what a great night we had with Oscar winning his 44th Best in group win under Mrs Lyn Niemann (S.A) and then onto his 18th Best Exhibit In Show Award under Mr Ted Kerley (S.A).
What a absolute honour to win the Ronald Bond trophy donated in his memory by his wife Lorraine. Thank you so much especially as they are a terrier family. I will treasure it always. Ch Jollygaze Dashing Diplomat “ Gavin “
We cannot believe we got Oscar back into the ring after being so sick from the last show he was at and losing 6kg but in the last few weeks putting weight back on and to be able to perform as Good as he did. What a year so far for this amazing boy winning 8 Best in groups and converting those into 2 Best in shows and 4 Reserve in shows......this at very limited shows this year. Our young Danni (Khingsahl Thunder Down Under) did not disappoint with 2 Reserve Challenges and 1 Minor in group award at 8 months old. What was even more special about last nights show was that it was the Norma Zimmerle Memorial Show and we feel very privileged to have won this very special Trophy from a very special lady. Not a great photo of Oscar but one am in the morning Oscar was certainly not wanting to get his photo taken. Just home and sitting with John with a glass of wine reflecting over the last couple of weeks with our Jollygaze Dandies. Gavin over the last two weekends has Achieved 2 Best in shows and 4 group wins also gaining his final points for his Supreme Title. Our heartfelt thanks to,all the Judges who have recognised our dogs quality. Special thanks to Amanda Cooney Gavins handler and Jessica Bligh Rhondas handler . We have had some help with them along they way with Karen Bathgate, Julie Walsh who have stepped up if needed. My special thanks to Emma Greenway who has trusted me with this beautiful breed. Change in Schedule for DDKC shows 5th & 6th June The Darling Downs Kennel Club has just been advised that the CJC will not be conducting an Open Show this weekend in Toowoomba as previously scheduled.
Always entertaining whether at a dog show or on facebook is Ray Cooper – couldn’t resist putting this one in the column.
Given there will be no Open Show, Show 2 will now commence one hour after the completion of Show 1 on Saturday 5 June. Groups 1 and 5 and Groups 2 and 4 will be judged in rings set up in the Clive Berghofer Pavilion situated to the south of the DDKC Club house. Groups 6 and 7 and Group 3 will be judged outside in the usual area. The grounds have been sprayed since Toowoomba Royal and have greatly improved so there should be no issue with prickles. Rosemary Green DDKC Secretary Mackay Kennel Club – Change of Judges for their spectacular 100 yrs celebration weekend Thanks to everyone for your patience in these trying COVID times while we organised new judges for our Centennial Shows weekend on 5 & 6 June. The Mackay Kennel Club is pleased to announce that we have secured interstate judges for all 3 shows. The new judges are: Deborah Harbin (NSW) (replacing Barbara Doyle) Lianne Rowles (NSW)(replacing Sandra Mashford) Coral Gray (WA) (replacing Julie Keenan) June 2021 This month always see’s many specialties being held along with championship shows in all zones. Western Australian News Jeni Sach WA Columnist Email: mailto: kaasha@aapt.net.au After a few years away I am back doing the K9Online column for WA. If you have any news you wish to share please email me at kaasha@aapt.net.au. I start this column offering the committee of the Metropolitan Kennel Club of WA both congratulations and commiserations. This committee worked so hard to make sure that we still had interstate judges for their shows on 24 and 25 April2021 when a couple of judges had to pull out due to Covid restrictions. Unfortunately, the universe was not with us and after having a case of community spread Mr McGowan put us into lockdown for the weekend, leaving the committee scrambling to either stop judges flying in or organising flights to get judges home as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, the cancellation of the shows has cost the Club a lot of money in airfares, accommodation, food and other fees. Thankfully the majority of exhibitors have donated their entry fees an we look forward to these shows going ahead late this year. Post lockdown we had a weekend of group and specialty shows and everyone was on tenterhooks waiting for the announcement late on the Thursday night as to whether or not restrictions would lift and the shows could go ahead. Luckily for us they did, for the Saturday daytime there was no requirement outdoors for masks but this changed and from that night we all had to get used to showing with masks on, something those in the Eastern States have been doing for a while. On Saturday, 1 May 2021 the Non-Sporting Dog Club of WA held two champ shows. Our NSW 38 | K9online.com.au
judge was unable to come and was replaced with Mrs Joanne Sewell who awarded both Best in Show and Runner-up Best in Show to Michelle Roberts’ two Dalmatians, Ch Winterfalls Some Like It Hot and Ch Winterfalls Midnight Cowboy.
The second show was judged by Mrs Mavis Cochrane who gave Best in Show to the Wasley’s Great Dane, Ch Cymroz Dog of Thunder, and Runner-up Best in Show to Sharon Murray’s Shih Tzu, Am & Aust Ch Su Chen A Man For All Seasons At Tzupreme (Imp USA).
The Gun Dog Club of WA also had a change of judge for their champ show and it was judged by Ms Jessica Brown. Best in Show was awarded to the English Springer Spaniel, Ch Westspring The One and Only (AI) owned by D Mosley and WG & LJ Loftus. Runner-up Best in Show was Sylvia Lockwood’s Pointer, Ch Rhyll Shooting From The Hip.
The Bull Terrier Club of WA held a Championship and an Open Show on 1 May 2021. The Champ Show was judged by Mrs Di Cross from NSW. BIS was awarded to Huatare Everlong owned by Lisa Lovett.
Runner-up Best in Show was Wilou Sister Louise owned by N A’Court.
On the evening of 1 May 2021 the Working Dog Club of WA held a Championship and an Open Show. The judge for the Champ show was Mrs Sue Mallia. Best in Show was Sue and Julia Van Dinter’s Shetland Sheepdog, Sup Ch Sunland Star Witness. This girl is having a great run at the moment having recently gained her Supreme title, won the WA Contest of Winners in March and now winning BIS at the WDC. Runner-up Best in Show was the Australian Shepherd owned by Tim Thomas, Belinda West and Joshua Stankovic, Sup Ch Ochaye I am Prime.
On Sunday, 2 May 2021 there were more specialty shows. The West Australian Terrier Club had their Championship Show judged by Mr Steve Warry who awarded Best in Show to the Welsh Terrier owned by Liz Walmsley, C & L Duval & R Young Am & Aust Ch Monaline Lancelot (Imp Serbia).
At the BTC Open Show Mrs Nicola Lawton awarded Best in Show to Stan Honnery’s Ch Staunchbull Quest at Honhazsta (AI). Runner-up Best in Show was J Beveridge’s Cyclop Devils Hunting (AI).

The Utility Dog Club of WA finished a huge weekend for Michelle Roberts. Following on from her BIS and RUBIS wins at the Non-Sporting Dog Club show her Boxer, Ch Chizack Maxed Out AT Taswest (Imp NZ), co-owned with A Hobday, was awarded Runner-up Best in Show at both UDC shows.
The judges for the Utility Dog Club were Mr Peter Primrose and Mrs Lynn Spargo. Both judges awarded the same dogs for BIS, RUBIS and BISN, with both Best in Show awards going to the young Bernese Mountain Dog owned by David & Gayle May and Rick & Kathryn Berwick, Ch Sennen Oops I Did It Again.
Best in Show Neuter at both shows was Denise Ball and Brett Christie’s Dobermann, Ch Aegis Harley Quinn.
At the second show General Specials was judged by Mrs P Brown from Queensland. Her Best in Show winner was the Saluki, Ch Itsozi The Jewel Keeper JC, owned by Sheila Timson and handled by Lauren Storrs. Runner-up Best in Show as the Bernese Mountain Dog again.
On 8 & 9 May 2021 the Fremantle Dog Club and Canine Stewards Association of WA joined forces to put on a triple champ show and an open show. The Covid Gods were relatively kind to us and with no travel restrictions we were finally able to have a show with a full eastern states panel of judges. There were two shows on the Saturday making for a very long show day starting at 8.30 am and finishing around 8.00 pm. At the first show General Specials was judged by Ms J Dickinson-Franks (Vic). Best in Show went to Rick & Kathryn Berwick’s and David & Gayle May’s Bernese Mountain Dog, Ch Sennen Oops I Did It Again.
Runner-up Best in Show was Julie Harris and Ashlea Stanton’s Shetland Sheepdog, Sup Ch Lurikeen To Glam T Give A Damn.
The final champ show had General Specials judged by Mr John Lewington from South Australia and the BIS and RUBIS winners were the same as the second show. In WA we only have a handful of country shows each year and many of us have missed our weekends away. On 15 & 16 May 2021 the Geraldton & Districts Dog Club were finally able to hold a show weekend and once again we were lucky enough to have interstate judges, being Mrs Iris Glynn, Mrs Valerie Carter and Mrs Connie Redhead – all from South Australia. Although windy (as Geraldton usually is) the weather was warm and sunny. At the first show Generals Specials was judged by Mrs Glynn who awarded BIS and RUBIS to both Utility Dogs. The Best in Show winner was Natasha Ryan’s Newfoundland, Happybear Mr Brytsyde who was also Best in Show at the second show by Ms Redhead.

At the afternoon show Ms Redhead awarded RUBIS to Doug Bowe & Judy Purss’ Fox Terrier (Smooth), Ch Triplefun Memphis Belle.
The final show to report on this month is the Metropolitan Kennel Club show day on Sunday, 23 May. Despite the cold, wet and windy conditions the MKC committee ran a successful Open and Championship show. At the Open Show General Specials was judged by Julia Van Dinter. Best in Show went to another of Natasha Ryan’s Newfoundlands, Ch Happybear Look Who’s Talking (AI). RUBIS was the Saluki, Ch Itsozi The Jewel Keeper JC. The Championship Show had a full panel of WA judges and General Specials was judged by Jeni Sach, her first General Specials appointment since achieving All Breeds status. BIS was awarded to the Welsh Terrier owned by Liz Walmsley, C & L Duval & R Young - Am & Aust Ch Monaline Lancelot (Imp Serbia).
We had an early start on the Sunday to allow exhibitors a bit of extra time for the trip home. General specials at the third shows judged by Val Carter. As mentioned above, she awarded BIS to the Bernese Mountain Dog. RUBIS went to Steve Warry’s Lowchen, Ch Sabu Banana In Striped Pyjamas. Unfortunately there was also some sad news on the weekend of the 15th and 16th with Aimee Wasley losing her Great Dane Angel, Ch & Neut Gr Ch Wittstone Teenage Dreams. Angel was 10.5 years old. She was the first Neuter Grand Champion in WA and just the second Nationally. She was consistently the winners circle and will be sadly missed by her family.

Welcome to my first report as the Tasmanian columnist. Thank you very much to Gail Cullen, who has been the Tassie correspondent for a number of years. Sadly, for the second month in a row, tragedy has hit the Tasmanian show scene. On Saturday May 8, at the British Bulldog Club of Tasmania show, 25 year old Katelyn Innes collapsed. She was taken to hospital in Launceston before being flown to Hobart, where she was operated on. As I write this, Katelyn remains in a coma and has a long road to recovery ahead of her. She is mother to 2yo Aiden, wife to Matt, and 25 weeks pregnant with a baby girl.
Katelyn is a much loved member of our dog show community. Born into showing, she is daughter of All Breeds judge Yanina Smith and granddaughter of renowned Bulldog Breeder Fran Smith. She is 48 | K9online.com.au

To support Katelyn and her family during this difficult time, Dogs Tasmania and Showmanager are running a virtual show. Dogs past and present can be entered, including dogs on the Limited Register. Entries close July 17, after which the catalogue will be printed, bound and presented to Katey to show her how loved she is. There is a goal of 1000 dogs, so please go HERE to enter as many dogs as you can. Katey, “You’ve got this!” ************* Saturday May 2 saw a State Election here in Tasmania. Just prior to the election Dogs Tasmania President, David Sales together with representatives of the Brighton Show Society, Tassie Flying Paws, and Brighton Kennel Club met with Liberal candidate for Lyons, Justin Derksen, who was pleased to announce that the Gutwein Government, if re-elected with an absolute majority, would pledge $200,000 toward the further development of the kennel area at Pontville. This money would be used to pave the indoor area of the new pavilion, provide an awning for shelter on the eastern side of the pavilion, connect services and fence the existing rings as well as several other minor works. This application was submitted by Tassie Flying Paws with the support of Dogs Tasmania, Brighton Kennel Club and Brighton Show Society. The Gutwein

May was a busy month in the NT with 3 weekends of clustered shows, plus the obedience and agility clubs getting a few trials in as well!! The weather has been much kinder to us and started to cool off, making shows and trials far more enjoyable. There were quite a few Champion and Neuter Champion titles finally reached over the last month from across all 7 groups. Having only just really kicked off with our show season again up here its been a big wait for some of these dogs to finish them off. A very big congratulations to Supreme Champion Inselstaat Van Ish (AI) on obtaining her Supreme Champion Title. Ava is the very first Rottweiler in the NT to obtain a Supreme Title and only the 4th Rottweiler Bitch in Australia to ever reach it. Freds Pass Positive Dog Training Club finally got to hold its first trials for 2021 after lighting upgrades at their home grounds took a lot longer than anticipated. They’re very glad to be back to normal with training and trials back to full swing. A lovely weekend of trials to pay tribute to Sue Dwyer who was such a big supporter of FPPDTC. Rottweiler Club of the NT are still plugging away with their Scent Work Training sessions and are aiming to hold the first NT Scent Work Trial in the not too distant future. They would love to hear from any Trainee Group 6 judges that may be travelling to Darwin and willing to judge an Open Show. This is a Dogs NT requirement to finalise their affiliation, so dates are fully negotiable. Please contact them on rottweilerclubnt@gmail.com if you may be able to help
