Ozy’s Doggy Column Sydney Royal Easter breaks record The Sydney Royal Easter show broke a world record as the first event to have the most attended guests since the COVID-19 pandemic, with over 800,000 people attending over 12 days.
Information sourced from: - https://www.mediaweek.com.au/800000-reasons-why-media-partners-love-sydneys-royal-eastershow/
With the royal easter show came great crowds and great exposure for ANKC registered purebred pedigree dogs, which makes me want to focus on awareness and promotion for this column.
With social media being a powerful tool to spread content, if you are on Instagram and share pictures of your ANKC registered dogs, be sure to use the hashtags, #ANKC, #Australiannationalkennelcouncil and #ankcbreeder. Likewise you can do the same on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media platforms to help promote the ANKC. To help raise awareness of the kennel club, I produced a 3-piece episode podcast about the ANKC. I hope that you will engage with it and share it with anyone who wants to learn more or perhaps is wanting to purchase a puppy or become an ANKC registered breeder. A Dog’s World Let’s get the ANKC on the map and shed some light on beautiful, ethically bred, purebred pedigree dogs! So what are you waiting for, get sharing your purebred dogs far and wide!! - Ozy.

Canine Construction & Confirmation
The Many Groups of Breeders....... Written & Supplied by Narelle Hammond Canine
Have you ever thought about the different groups of breeders that make up our dog world. Which BREEDER are you? The beginner. Doing everything wrong, thinking wrong, buying wrong and feeding wrong. Never realising there is a blueprint or rules of the game that they must follow. The learner. This group has realised that they have started badly and while keeping their initial mistake, has now spent time reading the standard, learning and doing their best to set out on the right path. The novice. They have managed to right themselves and bought a half decent bitch, have bred their first litter or two, is starting to do a bit of winning and is starting to be recognised by other breeders and exhibitors.
14 | K9online.com.au
Construction and Conformation FB Group)
The everlasting novice. Probably the happiest group of breeder/exhibitor. They are always nice people, with equally nice dogs and are well liked by all. They often dabble in different breeds. They have no ambition, practically never breed a litter, and if they do, use the nearest, handiest stud. They only ever normally go to local shows, know and are known by everyone because they have been around forever, occasionally picking up a win, but are just perfectly happy to be involved in the dog world for a pleasant day out with friends. The Middleton. This is by far the largest group of all. This is the average breeder who is recognised as reliable, breeding decent litters, rearing puppies correctly, with a reasonable eye for a dog, having studied and interpreted the breed standard to what they think is correct, and has facilities to keep a stud dog and a couple of brood
bitches. They go to most shows and do a reasonable amount of winning. They are involved in various breed clubs and support all activities, dead keen exhibitors, they try their best to be an asset and a credit to their chosen breed/s. The good breeder. This is a rarer group because this group has realised something the average Middleton does not. They have defined what a “Good dog” is. And that a decent dog is not quite good enough. Once the Middleton realises this, they graduate into this group, breeding a better standard of dog and will never be satisfied with a mediocre though typical and pleasing dog. They realise that Middleton is not for them and will probably cut their losses and generally raise their standard of dog. The good breeder is always keen to learn and has taken the time and trouble to find out most of the more advanced points such as what constitutes a good shoulder placement, correct croup angulation and where other virtues may be found. They breed some very nice stock and have learned how to use that stock to advantage. They have learned that the title of champion does not automatically mean that the dog carrying that title is necessarily the best. The good breeder is always trying to improve and will sell a decent dog or bitch overseas that the Middleton would have kept as the good breeder realises that they either have a better one in their kennel or that the good one is not quite good enough. The good
breeder has nearly always been in their chosen breed for about ten years or more and can discuss other breeders’ preferences in the breed and pedigrees of most kennels. Finally, we come to the most difficult group to define. The top breeder. We all know them and there is normally only a handful of them or less in each breed. They seem to go on forever, always producing a good one, always having a good one coming on and always with quality dogs in their kennels. Their dogs usually have failings rather than faults. They also give nothing away in breed type, style or make and shape. They always have a good dog in the open class, another in the lower classes coming up and a very promising puppy coming through the ranks. They have usually been at the top of their chosen breed for many years and have a distinguishable style all their own which is distinct, easily recognisable and individual. They are internationally known ‘names’ in their breed and have successfully exported and gained many champions overseas, as well as in their own country and assisted many breeding programs internationally. They never seem to disappear and very few breeders join their ranks. Cairns City Kennel Club is proud to have held the first Scent Work trial in NQ and one of the first in the State. Dedicated handlers from our club, the Tablelands and Townsville participated with their dogs in 8 different events.
The conditions were challenging, but everyone showed their spirit and sportsmanship. All handlers qualified in at least one event, with many succeeding in all 8 classes and gaining their first titles in this new sport. Some handlers were experienced having trained for a year, with others being relative newcomers.

We thank our judges, Silke Weyland and Debby Lamprecht, who braved the elements and were able to adjust their search areas due to the weather conditions. Huge thank you to the volunteers who supported their club members, and especially to our experienced trial secretary, who was so organized, and directed the event like a well oiled machine, with qualifying cards available right after the event finished.
Flyball is often described as drag racing for dogs: fast, furious and full of excitement. It is a relay race between two teams of four dogs. Each dog must jump over four hurdles, retrieve a ball by triggering a flyball box pedal

Many saw their dogs finish off titles which were put on hold due to hardly a show season in 2020 so champers were flowing
One such person was Sue Barr’s who titled three of her dogs over the course of the weekend. Two pointers and her ever so charming Wirehaired Slovakian Pointer. Sue certainly made top notch of the celebration bottle(s).
Bowen Kennel Club also managed to quickly change their show dates to the long ANZAC weekend, the hard working committee provided a top weekend for all who entered including a free sausage sizzle Sunday night. Bowen known as Blowing Bowen certainly put on a display of strong winds at times but most managed to stay on their feet to enjoy the long weekend. 40 | K9online.com.au
Ashleigh Grendon had a top weekend when she Supreme titled her GSD and finishing it off with a BIS, her German Spitz went RUBIS at same show handled by her sister Jasmine.
Mechelle Mcfadzen had fun with her Frenchies
Three rings for these shows saw early finishes which meant a fair bit of time to sit with friends and chill out. Well done to their show manager who kept everyone moving or working – Louise Marsden. Marjory Adkins has a new little addition and was well received by the judges.
********** As most around Australia were made aware of the four English Springer Puppies stolen - to date the two boys have been recovered but still missing are the two girls. So people please share and post as much as possible to hopefully see the return of the two girls A lovely award was received for Chris Coggan’s little Italian Greyhound with his first ever Class in Show award.

South Australian News Julie Manser South Australian Columnist Email: julie@tiptreekennels.com.au April shows totalled 9 spread over 3 weekends which was boosted by Easter cluster shows of 6 at Pt Pire & 5 at Mt Gambier. Interstate judges were engaged and officiated except for Adelaide Plains Club which was forced to replace Queenslanders with South Aussies, due to a COVID 19 outbreak. The Easter clusters were well supported averaging just over 300 for Pt Pirie and mid 500 for Mt Gambier. Dogs SA Conformation Judges Training Panel held a practical handling day mid-month. The addition of a show handling clinic, new exhibitor education session and an Advance Nutrition stand was well received and rounded the day out with something for everyone. The 2021 show year has started in Tasmania. We are also hoping to have reports on herding, Rally O, tracking and other K9 sports.
Till next month Gail Cullen
COVID has certainly tested us all but when it comes to dog shows show secretaries have proven to be a resilient bunch. Its on. Its off, judges coming, oh wait no they are not and then the scramble to replace those who cant make it. Its become an all to familiar scene across the dog world but its tougher in such a small state where the numbers of judges is limited and rules prevent repeating them within certain time frames. This report is quite short but it would be very remiss of me not to mention that the dog world here in Tasmania has lost an amazing volunteer, worker and all round good guy. Colin Gillanders passed away last Friday leaving a gaping hole in our dog community. Our sincere condolences to Philippa and his family. Rest easy Colin. The shows from last week were held at Huonville. It was fitting they had a moments silence for Colin as he was a very great supporter of this Club. Judges for the shows were Mr G Vernon (NSW), Carol Eastley (TAS) and Mr G Kerr (QLD Best in show at the AM Show under Mr G Vernon was the Staffordshire Bull Terrier Sup Ch Bustabones Try Whistling This owned by Bustabones Kennels and runner up in show was the Weimaraner Sup Ch Arnhill Standing Room Only (AI) owned by Mr J Turner. At the PM Show under Mr G Kerr best in show was the Old English Sheepdog Ch Perfu Phenix Rising owned by C, S and J Moore with runner up in show going to the Weimaraner Sup Ch Arnhill Standing Room Only (AI) owned by Mr J Turner. There are shows this coming weekend and these will be in next month column

The show season in the NT is just kicking off with only 1 show held in February and the next then not until 3rd April with the double header hosted by Darwin Ladies Kennel Club. The trialling ring has been equally quiet with only limited trials held so far. As the weather starts to cool down the clubs are now kicking in to gear and the calendar is full for May!!

It is great to see the Alice Springs Kennel & Dog Sports Club kicking on still. It was a little touch and go, but the new committee have managed to pull together and get a cluster of 4 shows scheduled for July 2021. It’ll be the first weekend of the NT Show Circuit and is usually well supported by interstate exhibitors.
Show 1 – Mrs Noreen Harris (VIC) Best in Show Zamu Diablo Notre Reve (Imp NZ),Van der Horst’s French Bulldog
The end of 2020 saw the formation of the Rottweiler Club of the NT, a new club affiliate with Dogs NT. So far the club has hosted several social days and has just started Scent Work training sessions with its members. I feel the first ever NT Scent Work trial won’t be too far off in the future. Canine Expo have knocked it up a notch and have a massive 16 shows on this year’s calendar. Darwin Ladies Kennel Club and Show Dog Handlers Club are both moving along with their event planning and we’re all glad to see a lot more stability following last year’s dramas.
It was lovely to see some new exhibitors starting out 2021 in the show ring, hopefully they enjoyed their first time around and we see a few more new faces as the year progresses. Results from Darwin Ladies Kennel Club 3rd April were:
Runner Up in Show Ellerran Girls Wanna Have Fun,Vickery’s Collie (Rough) Baby Puppy in Show Beadale A Deal With The Devil, Clarke & Niemann’s Schipperke Minor Puppy in Show Emzacily Danger Money, Halliday’s Rottweiler Puppy in Show Zamu Diablo Notre Reve (Imp NZ),Van der Horst’s French Bulldog
If you haven’t been up North to a show yet, it’ll be worth a trip for one of the clusters on this year’s calendar!
Junior in Show Dellevie Torontes, Jones’ English Springer Spaniel
Palmerston Gundog Club held its first RATG at the end of March and a big congratulations goes to the following dogs and their handlers on their results:

His first Best in Show was awarded by Gwen Johnston (NZ) and his second was awarded by Linda Strongman (NZ). We are very proud of all of his achievements in the ring and we thank the Judges both local and overseas, who have recognised his qualities. Judge is a wonderful dog to live with and we all love him dearly. Between Dogs NZ restrictions on shows and the cooler months not too many championship shows coming up. I for one will enjoy a bit of a rest. Stay safe, stay warm and be kind Cheers Penny
